The 'This is Totally Awesome.' Memorial Day weekend trip report

Well hello there. So here we are. A few days post vacation and already finding it hard to get back into the daily routine. What better way to relieve the blues than to start a trip report. Most of you by now know who we/ I am. But lets recap just in case.

DSC03044.jpg

Your host (Me) Aleisha: I just celebrated birthday #33 (eek) two days before we left. Love Disney, Hockey, Kenny Chesney and summer. Hates her two hour commute into DC every day and is allergic to just about everything, including animal fat found in beef pork and dairy. Yes its a pain, no I do not recommend it.

Andy: My DH, 35. Eats breathes and sleeps hockey, is also employed by the Caps, which probably explains why most of his wardrobe is something Caps related. Loves Disney, Star Wars and thinks he is a lot more funny than he actually is. Hates the heat, but says he is getting used to it.

DSC03025.jpg

Logan: 4. Star Wars lover, Disney lover. Heart breaker in the making, loves the ladies and has an empathy that is far beyond his years. Mommy's boy, and allergic to dairy.

Now originally this trip was supposed to be back in March but had to be postponed when hockey season ended its lockout. So instead of cancelling it right out, we decided to just postpone it, celebrating my bday (May 22nd) and our 7th anniversary (May 27th) down in our favorite place. Bonus, it was Star Wars weekend

So this was the plan:
May 24-29th at the Wilderness Lodge Villas....
Celebrations: Birthaversary (as titled by a Cast Member)
Dinning Plan.
Annual Passes.

But I am assuming this isn't what you came to read. Which means I shall get started with the actual report.

Great TR so far! We were also at DHS on the 26th and decided to leave before fantasmic because the crowds got the best of us. We would have left around 6pm but we didn't want our TSMM FPs to go to waste.

Glad your son enjoyed Star Tours! Thats a favorite of mine as well (and I'm not even a huge Star Wars fan). We rode it twice during this trip and if we had time would have rode it more.

Yeah it was quite nuts on the 26th. Totally wasn't expecting that.

I am not a huge Star Wars fan myself but I agree I love the ride....

We were in MK on the 26th too! The crowds before the fireworks we crazy! We were in town square for the parade and then went to meet the princesses, so we just watched the fireworks from the train station instead of trying to fight the crowds to get back in front of the castle. Looks like you had a great trip! Can't wait to read more.
Fighting the crowds was insane, it took us forever to get out of that park.....
thank you for reading....

Great TR! Your little guy is adorable- so glad it worked out for you guys to go to SWW even though you had to wait a couple months!

We were excited to join SWW even if it was crowded. Sometimes you just got to do it.

Monday May 27, 2013: Day Four

I did not seem to take many pictures at all during day 4...hmmmmm

DSC03163.jpg

The happy anniversary couple...taken the day after....

Our 7th anniversary would be spent in a couple of ways. There was much debate on what to first as we knew (well Andy and I did anyhow) that the evening we had arranged for our Kids Night Out date, and little man would be staying behind. But first, we had a full day ahead. After a little back and forth, we agreed to head back to Hollywood Studios to hit up some of the attractions that we didn't do yesterday, or we wanted to do again. Ahem, Logan apparently really did find Star Tours to be that amazing.

What a difference a day makes! Was it busy? Yes. Where there lines still? Yes, but not nearly the insanity that yesterday brought. We marched are way back to Toy Story Mania, where the fast pass sign read 4pm, and the standby at a 70-90 minute wait. We debated, but knew if we wanted to do it, then we needed to do it then. And so we wound our way through the entrance and stood in line to wait...

DSC03159.jpg

This is the only shot of us on our anniversary. Amazing huh.

Turns out, the standby line was the way to go this morning as 25 minutes later we loaded and were playing. My aim may not have been as great as Andy's but I at least managed to do so much better than the Buzz ride, which surely means I must be improving right??? I vow one of these days I will beat Andy, but I am only fooling myself. Still I can dream right?

Logan wanted to do Star Tours again, and of course we couldn't exactly leave without doing it now could we? I mean the kid loved it. And so we headed on over once more. I had no clue there were different combinations, and so I was surprised. This time Darth Vadar who was looking for the rebel spy. I am ashamed to admit I don't even know the name of the previous one we had. Anyway so Darth was looking for the rebel spy who just happened to be....

Logan. Yep that's right. My son, thrilling his daddy. I am not kidding when I say this, Andy practically jumped up and down in his seat slapping him on the shoulders and yelling that's you buddy. Yep I am pretty sure having his son be the rebel spy ranks right up there in terms of awesomeness on this vacation. And for the rest of the morning this is all we heard, how cool it was that he was picked. Logan on the other hand could have probably cared less, but hey if it made daddy happy then he must have done something right and he thought it was cool too.

Houston, we have no passed a stage. The stage in which seeing Disney Jr on stage is a thing of the past. He still watches the shows on TV, but had no interest in watching the actual play and with little else that interested any of us at HS, we decided it was time to do a little shopping. Logan wanted to spend the rest of his piggy bank money, and I? Well I just wanted a sandwich from the Earl before we had to return home. So off to DTD we went.

DSC03187.jpg

First by boat to the boardwalk because we missed the resort and fell in love with it on our last stay...then by bus..

I always marvel at some of the people on buses, as we boarded the bus the lady beside me began to complain about the fact that buses were taking forever to get there. Apparently she had reservations at BBB she said they told her to make sure she left extra time-somewhere around at least 40 minutes! can you believe- to get there. But she assumed they were overestimating and lying so she had waved off the warning. When we finally got to the bus drop off, her and the family pretty much pushed their way to the front and jetted off. I am assuming they made it, even if late.

And we headed off to Earl....ah yes Earl, how I love the...and it seems its only growing in popularity the line always seems to get longer and longer. And so Logan and I went and grabbed a spot to sit, while Andy grabbed the food. Once again Logan must have been really hungry because for the first time, he actually asked for food.

Earl was amazing as usual, I had a turkey sandwich with pretty much nothing on it. Andy had a ham and something-I can not remember what it was called. And Logan had a grilled cheese. Which to him was disappointing since he wanted a PB&J.

After lunch we shopped till we dropped, or rather Logan did as once he was done he wanted nothing to do with shopping anymore. I must admit I never thought shopping would be so hard, Andy and I did our best to look, but Logan had, had enough and since dinner was going to be at Fulton's we decided to rush home with our goodies.

Kelly from Kids Night out arrived just on time, we had actually had her twice before on our last trip, and Logan was excited to see her again. If you are looking for a night out, I highly recommend not only Kelly, but the service itself. We never have to worry and Logan has always had a blast. It really is nice to get out and do some adult time as well...a little on the pricey side but sometimes its worth it.

Dinner was at Fulton's, the last time we had it was on our honeymoon. We were seated early, and the waiter immediately asked how many years we were celebrating when I told him seven he asked if I married really young because I barely looked legal. I laughed and said thank you. Believe it or not I get it a lot. He kept looking at me the remainder of the evening asking if I was sure. Believe me I am. As for what we had, Andy ordered the lobster and I went for Salmon. Andy just about died it was so good. And that was the best salmon I had ever had. Truth.

We decided to skip dessert as we were both full-and they weren't sure of what exactly they could get me.-and instead we headed to Magic Kingdom for the remainder of the evening. We had enough time for Space Mountain and that was about it. As much as we would have loved to have snuck in another one or two, the park was getting close to closing and we had little desire to sit through the mess of people and fight them to get out. Besides, we had one last full day, and you better believe we were going to use every minute of it....

Tuesday May 28, 2013: Day Five
The last full day is always a mixed bag of emotions. The knowledge that you’re coming to an end is bad enough. The packet that awaits you on the door only serves as a reminder of this. But we were determined not to let this ruin the day. We still had plenty of fun to do, and two fantastic meals to be had. Dressed and ready we made our way down for one final breakfast at Roaring Forks. Our first stop today would be at Epcot. Though we had different ideas of what we actually wanted to do.Logan of course wanted to hit up Nemo, but now that he is tall enough, Andy and I wanted to get him on Test Track.Neither of us had been on the updated version, and I hadn’t been on it since before I was expecting back in '08 – well knew about it anyway, since back then I was expecting him, unbeknownst to us at the time.

The moment he saw it was all about cars, he was so excited!!!! And if he wasn’t by then, surely he was when he got a sight of the following:
DSC03167.jpg

Hello Dream car! Yes, this was both Logan and mommy approved right there. And if that isn’t your style how about this one:

DSC03171.jpg

Ohhh fancy….(Logan’s wording)

And so the kid was sold, and the 70 minutes that we had to wait didn’t seem all that bad in the end, we enjoyed looking around and exploring the new concepts of the future, though I have to say some of them were quite impressive but I didn’t see how they would meet the needs of a family bigger than two…Before we knew it we were in the design room, where Logan and daddy worked on building the coolest ride around, while I watched the clock. And then we were off to test it out. Let me say, I love the new addition; I love the whole thing in fact. And Logan, well he was laughing right along and smiling. Though I do not know which he enjoyed more the creating the car, or the ride. As we walked off the ride he screamed out what’s seems to have become the phrase of the trip.

"THAT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME!!!! I SO HAVE TO DO THAT AGAIN!"

Afterwards we headed back towards Nemo, because he wasn’t going to let us get away without riding it just one more time. But the line was over 50 minutes, and while we liked the ride, we didn’t like it that much. And Logan may have been a little bummed by this but decided it was OK to skip it, as long as we headed back to the resort to get a little afternoon swimming in and to have lunch. With little else that we seemed to need to hit this trip, we agreed. And so back ‘home’ we went.

DSC03173.jpg

Welcome home, indeed!

WARNING: NO TRIP REPORT IS COMPLETE WITHOUT AT LEAST ONE STRANGE AFTERNOON. HERE IS THIS ONE.

Of course what we had forgotten about was the note that was left under our door yesterday. The one informing us they would be conducting fire alarm drills around the resort this afternoon. We didn’t think much of it because, well we weren’t expecting to be back during the time they were doing it and so we went on our merry little way. That is until we sat down for lunch at Roaring Forks and the announcement came on warning us not to be alarmed. Now if you have never had the pleasure to experience the alarm system, let me be the first to tell you, they work. They are also quite loud and obnoxious. Yes, I realize this is what they are meant to be, this is their purpose. But I have never heard anything like it. I do believe my ears rang the entire night. It got even worse as we headed to our room, and we huddled outside on the porch along with the other guests who had the same idea. It may have still been annoying but at least it wasn’t as bad. But if you receive this warning, my best advice is, avoid the place if you can.

Once the sound stopped we marched back into our room, threw on our bathing suits and made our way down to the main pool to spend a lazy afternoon by the pool. Soaking up as much of the Florida sun as possible. Or so we thought. It seemed the swimming gods were not in our favor this afternoon.

DSC03138.jpg

I sat soaking up the rays while Andy and Logan jumped in the pool. It was just beginning to cloud up, but hot enough to not care. I was just about to head in and join when a woman started freaking out, I mean screaming and hollering for anyone’s attention exclaiming. "Please tell me I am not the only one to see it, you see it too?" She rushes up to the lifeguard who steps off the chair and goes and grabs something, together the head to the rock slide as he is yelling for everyone to get out of the pool. I must say I have never seen so many people move out of the way so fast. And then I see it, the reason for commotions, is slithering into view. It’s a long, black snake…yes a freaking snake! It slithers into the pool and across the water and through the woods before the lifeguard – who didn’t seem so snake happy – could reach him. Not a snake fan myself – in fact I am rather afraid of them – let me say I didn’t blame him. The lady beside said that was the third time that day it had come out…hmmm. Once the coast was clear people jumped right back in just in time for the rain clouds to move in. And even if everyone was already wet, between that and the snake, well let’s just say it pretty much killed the swimming mood and so we headed back up to get ready for our last evening in the parks.

DSC03179.jpg

Yours truly.

On our way back, we stopped long enough for Logan to get his first pin set, which he quickly learned how to trade with the cast member. And for me to take some pictures around the resort.

DSC03181.jpg

He found me!

Soon however it was time to head down to the docks, we needed to head to Poly for dinner at 'Ohana this evening-one we had been looking forward to since we arrived. While we waited Logan made himself fast friends with the woman behind us on her honeymoon and he somehow apparently charmed her enough that she ended up handing him over another pin without trading. He smiled and said thank you just in time for the boat to come.

DSC03186.jpg

We arrived at the Poly a little early, checked in and knew we were going to have to wait as it was packed. 20 minutes after our initial reservation time, we were finally called and we joined the rest of our ‘cousins to enjoy what is our favorite meal on property. Even Logan loved it. Not surprising since the made both of us special dairy free ice cream sandwiches. I know I have said this before, but the look on his face, when he finds out that for a moment he can be like everyone else and enjoy ice cream without it killing him is priceless to any parent really. I hate having to see him sit out during things like that, so its absolutely beautiful to see him do and eat something that seems so normal to most people. And his response? You got it.

photo.jpg

"That was totally awesome….Can we go back for more?"

And now to top off the vacation and end on a strong not, one more entrance into Magic Kingdom. For a good long while now, long before this trip anyhow. Logan has been excited to try Big Thunder Mountain, exclaiming he is a big boy and won’t be afraid of it. We had been prepping him with online videos of it and such, to see if he would at least be interested in it. And when we found out he was tall enough, well even more excitement came along. We hadn’t had the change to get on it however and with the electric parade and Wishes about to happen there was a good chance there would be little to no wait. Sure enough we made a mad dash to the back of the park and practically walked on with about a five minute wait.
Logan and I got in one together as Andy went in front of us. I was a bit nervous on how he would actually do because talking about it is quite different than actually riding it. And judging by the death grip he had on the handle bar, I was berating myself. Maybe it was too soon. The kid looked genuinely scared. But there was nothing I could do except hold his hand and tell him it would be okay. And as we rounded the last corner of the ride and it came to a holt well I got my answer:

"Hey that wasn’t too bad, it was short..but you know what mommy? THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! When we come back, we are so doing that again!!!"

Mission complete. We did it, or rather he did it.

Instead of fighting the crowded buses at the end of the night, we decided to head back for the docks one final time. We watched Wishes from the boat as Logan fell asleep and answered a bunch of questions about DVC to a couple who was really interested in it. They had been going for the past five years, and have five kids….Andy was the expert on explaining so I sat there and clung to the last images of Magic Kingdom with a sleeping boy in my lap and trying to avoid the sinking feeling that tomorrow we would be heading home.

But not before one more round of fun….

Snake in the pool?!?!?!? Oh good night nurse!! LOL Funny thing about the alarm.... back in 2005 or 2006, we were at the Poly and they did a fire alarm drill, but we didnt know it was a fire alarm drill, DH thought he set off the smoke alarm because of the scalding hot showers he takes LOL. I can still picture him, flailing a towel frantically, trying to get it to stop!! LOL

Great TR, Aleisha!!! I can't get over seeing how much Logan has grown up. Also wonderful seeing him get to experience some of the big kid rides. I'll also definitely be thinking of your snake experience when we head out to the WL pool. They don't bother me (not that I want to swim with one), but I'm sure the kids will go into panic mode.

Nice, well if you see any of the slithery friends, think of me..lol. I know if I was in the pool I would have had a hay day myself.

Thank you for reading, I enjoy sharing, and seeing my son grow through the trip reports have been amazing believe it or not.
