The Super-Duper(Kind Of) Top Secret Surprise Birthday Trip Report

We have returned from our super-duper top secret surprise birthday trip to WDW. Some of you may remember that I wrote a short pre-trip report about this upcoming trip. See here http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=793491. The even shorter version is that I planned a surprise trip to WDW for my husband’s birthday. His birthday is November 28th and I began planning the trip in August. An email to my inbox promoting free dining pretty much made up my mind to set my plan in motion. I proved to be a very bad secret keeper which I pretty much expected lol. But hey, I kept it for about a month which is longer than I thought I could. It didn’t help that everyday Dan would ask me “Where are we going, where are we going???” He kept needling me and finally he asked “Are we going to Disney?” and all I could do was smile. I would lose in a second at poker. So the cat was out of the bag and he knew we were going. Not the grand reveal I wanted, but I really only have myself to blame lol!

So on with the trip! On the morning of Nov 28th we rose dark and early at 2:00 am. We had gotten everything ready the night before but we had some animals to take care of in the morning. The worst part of going on these trips is leaving all our animals behind and hoping they will be all right. We had dropped off our 2 dogs the night before at Dan’s parents house. We also have cats and horses. My friend who boards some horses at our house would be staying the week to take care of them and our cats.

With the pets taken care of and the truck loaded, we were on the road at a bit after 3 am. We had a 6 am flight out of Philadelphia and it takes about an hour to get there. We stopped at Wawa for a quick bite and some coffee! Yum! We arrived at the off-site parking lot at about 4:15 am. We used Winner for parking and I highly recommend them! They take you to the airport in your own car so you don’t have to transfer your bags to a shuttle and wait for a bunch of other people. When you return, they will pick you up in your car and you can either have them drive you back to their parking lot to drop them off or pay a small fee to immediately drive home from the airport and they will find their own way back to their lot.

We flew Southwest for the first time this trip. We usually take Spirit Airlines out of Atlantic City, but their fees have become exorbitant and I can’t justify the convenience of AC over Philly with the large price increases. We paid the extra $10 per ticket for the Early Bird Check in. We were early in the A group for boarding, I think A28 and 29. I really liked this service as I didn’t have to be online 24 hours in advance to get a good boarding position and will def do this again.
Our flight was uneventful (thankfully) and we landed in Orlando a little ahead of schedule. By this time we were a little hungry and didn’t know how long it would be before we would be able to eat so we stopped in a McFood before heading down to the Magical Express buses. Luckily for us, as soon as we got in line they started letting people on the bus for Pop Century, AKL, and CBR. We didn’t even stop in the line and I had no time to get the requisite photo of the ME line. I did get a few photos of the buses though.

On our way to the resort we had a little boy (maybe about 3 or 4 yo) who was so excited to be going to WDW. He was screaming his excitement right in our ears the whole trip. Everytime a new character came on the video, he went CRAZY. He was standing on the floor with his mouth right near our heads. Mom, at least make him sit down! Needless to say it was a long ride . I totally understand his excitement, but I just don’t think we could handle having kids! Although my mom tells me it is different when you have your own….I just don’t know:p. I think it is just her effort to get another grandchild (my sister has one). We were staying a Pop Century this trip and we were the second stop after CBR.

We arrived at PC and checked in. I think we arrived around 10 am and our room was ready. We had done online check-in at home prior to our trip. We were room 9308 which was in the 80’s section. It overlooked the computer pool. It was pretty chilly our entire trip, so it was never very busy in the pool. We had absolutely no problem with noise in our room. Occasionally we heard people walk by the room, but no different than when staying at CBR, POR or CSR. I have to add that this was our first time staying at a value resort, so I was a little concerned about whether we would like it. Our room was good although a little small, which I expected. It was nice and clean and we had no problems with it. The beds were a little squishier and much smaller than I am used to, but I was comfortable sleeping, but if you are used to a firm bed, you may have a little bit of a problem.

This was the view from our room.

This poor owl was blind so she will live her life here. The handler was talking about owls and conservation.

It was nice and relaxing taking the train over and checking out the animals over there. Not something we need to do every trip, but it is a nice change of pace. By this time, the nice afternoon was starting to get a little chilly and there were some ominous clouds coming in.

As we got on KS (turns out we didn’t need the fastpasses as it was a walk on at this point), it started to sprinkle. The animals were very active and it was a great safari.

A few more KS pics:

The cheetahs were closer than I have ever seen before.

DisneyTripNov2011195.jpg

These guys caused a little back up during the safari. They were stopped in the middle of the road for a few minutes. Never had that happen before!

Lions

After we got off the safari, it was starting to drizzle pretty good. We donned our ponchos and did a quick walk through on the Pangani Exploration Trail. I didn't take too many pics here because of the rain.

DisneyTripNov2011215.jpg

We headed back towards the Tree of Life pausing to take pics along the way.

A trip to Disney World... the best kinda non-surprise ever!!

Your AK pictures are stunning, Kristi. I could spend forever photographing the Animal Kingdom - it's so rich with detail.

Thanks Holly! I always find something new to photograph each time we are there. Plus a few old favorites to re-photograph lol!

Thanks! Don't beat yourself up over missing us lol! Stuff happens. Unfortunately it happened on your trip! It was a little chilly this trip, especially as it got towards evening. Dan was not digging it! He loves the hot weather and was hoping for it to be warmer than Jersey. Turned out to be a warm week back home. About the same temp as FL!

love it :):animwink:

Thanks for reading! More to come soon!

Great pics. Looking forward to reading the rest of your report.

Regarding the surprise, I can't keep a secret very good either. We surprised our boys for our trip in Aug, but surprised them 2 months earlier than planned. :)

Thank you! Lol about your surprise! It is so hard to keep surprises. Especially one like going to Disney when you want everyone to be as excited as you are!

I'm baaaack! With the Christmas holiday winding down maybe now I will have a little time to post! Now where was I? Oh yes, we had just gone to see ITTBAB.

It was about 4 pm and we had a 5:15 reservation at Boma. I didn't want to take a chance of staying to late and getting caught in the mass exodus at AK closing. We wandered towards the exit taking some photos as we went. I was a bit perturbed at myself for not taking pictures of the Christmas tree when I had a nice blue sky in the morning. Now the sky was gray and they look just like my pics I took last year when we went for the marathon! Note to self: Always take advantage of good sky when you have it!

We finally got our photopass CD the other day so here is our Everest pic.

Photo0001FiveBySeven.jpg

And yes Dan is a Steelers fan!

We hopped a bus to AKL and arrived with plenty of time to spare. The day had gotten pretty chilly and we hadn’t had time to go back to our room to get jackets. I stopped at Zawadi Marketplace to find a sweatshirt that wasn’t too expensive. I found a Mickey hoodie that was cheaper than some of the other options and I was cold so I broke down and bought it. I knew I would be miserable at the MK that night if I didn’t! Dan said he was fine, so he didn’t not buy anything (yet).

DisneyTripNov2011265.jpg

Before dinner, we stopped for some photopass pictures by the tree. This is the first time that I have taken advantage of photopass. Most times, I asked the photographers to take one with my camera. I did eventually decide to buy the CD because there were a lot that I didn't get with my own camera.

Photo0002FourBySix.jpg

After taking a few photopass pics, we checked in at Boma. We had tried Boma in January and really enjoyed it. Dan’s favorite restaurant is Le Cellier but there was no way I could get it booking this trip only 60 days out. I knew that he really loved Boma, so that was my next choice for his birthday dinner. I used our Disney Visa points to pay for dinner. Score! I am typically a pretty picky eater, but I find plenty of stuff at Boma that I really love.

Some buffet items (it was tough to take pics because the buffet area was pretty crowded and I didn't want to get in peoples way).

DisneyTripNov2011281.jpg

I took a pic of my first course, soup and some slaw but totally forgot my main plate! Doh! I did take one of Dan’s though. He had some beef tenderloin with BBQ sauce, Durban spiced roast chicken, and some sundried tomato hummus.

DisneyTripNov2011290.jpg

Dessert time! I had some banana bread pudding with rum sauce which was awesome! Also had some fruit cobbler and pineapple.

DisneyTripNov2011291.jpg

Dan was really digging the passionfruit dessert. Here is his sampler!

DisneyTripNov2011295.jpg

After we were totally stuffed the waitress brought out this for Dan's bday!

DisneyTripNov2011296.jpg

We shared his special bday dessert and then explored AKL a little and took some photos.

Next we headed to the MK for EMH. The MK was open till 1 am tonight. I just wished the one MK evening EMH that we would be able to attend wasn’t also the evening that we were going on hardly any sleep. If we made it till closing, we would have been up for 23 hours. Well, let’s see how we do!

Yay! The Magic Kingdom!
