The Super-Duper(Kind Of) Top Secret Surprise Birthday Trip Report

We have returned from our super-duper top secret surprise birthday trip to WDW. Some of you may remember that I wrote a short pre-trip report about this upcoming trip. See here http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=793491. The even shorter version is that I planned a surprise trip to WDW for my husband’s birthday. His birthday is November 28th and I began planning the trip in August. An email to my inbox promoting free dining pretty much made up my mind to set my plan in motion. I proved to be a very bad secret keeper which I pretty much expected lol. But hey, I kept it for about a month which is longer than I thought I could. It didn’t help that everyday Dan would ask me “Where are we going, where are we going???” He kept needling me and finally he asked “Are we going to Disney?” and all I could do was smile. I would lose in a second at poker. So the cat was out of the bag and he knew we were going. Not the grand reveal I wanted, but I really only have myself to blame lol!

So on with the trip! On the morning of Nov 28th we rose dark and early at 2:00 am. We had gotten everything ready the night before but we had some animals to take care of in the morning. The worst part of going on these trips is leaving all our animals behind and hoping they will be all right. We had dropped off our 2 dogs the night before at Dan’s parents house. We also have cats and horses. My friend who boards some horses at our house would be staying the week to take care of them and our cats.

With the pets taken care of and the truck loaded, we were on the road at a bit after 3 am. We had a 6 am flight out of Philadelphia and it takes about an hour to get there. We stopped at Wawa for a quick bite and some coffee! Yum! We arrived at the off-site parking lot at about 4:15 am. We used Winner for parking and I highly recommend them! They take you to the airport in your own car so you don’t have to transfer your bags to a shuttle and wait for a bunch of other people. When you return, they will pick you up in your car and you can either have them drive you back to their parking lot to drop them off or pay a small fee to immediately drive home from the airport and they will find their own way back to their lot.

We flew Southwest for the first time this trip. We usually take Spirit Airlines out of Atlantic City, but their fees have become exorbitant and I can’t justify the convenience of AC over Philly with the large price increases. We paid the extra $10 per ticket for the Early Bird Check in. We were early in the A group for boarding, I think A28 and 29. I really liked this service as I didn’t have to be online 24 hours in advance to get a good boarding position and will def do this again.
Our flight was uneventful (thankfully) and we landed in Orlando a little ahead of schedule. By this time we were a little hungry and didn’t know how long it would be before we would be able to eat so we stopped in a McFood before heading down to the Magical Express buses. Luckily for us, as soon as we got in line they started letting people on the bus for Pop Century, AKL, and CBR. We didn’t even stop in the line and I had no time to get the requisite photo of the ME line. I did get a few photos of the buses though.

On our way to the resort we had a little boy (maybe about 3 or 4 yo) who was so excited to be going to WDW. He was screaming his excitement right in our ears the whole trip. Everytime a new character came on the video, he went CRAZY. He was standing on the floor with his mouth right near our heads. Mom, at least make him sit down! Needless to say it was a long ride . I totally understand his excitement, but I just don’t think we could handle having kids! Although my mom tells me it is different when you have your own….I just don’t know:p. I think it is just her effort to get another grandchild (my sister has one). We were staying a Pop Century this trip and we were the second stop after CBR.

We arrived at PC and checked in. I think we arrived around 10 am and our room was ready. We had done online check-in at home prior to our trip. We were room 9308 which was in the 80’s section. It overlooked the computer pool. It was pretty chilly our entire trip, so it was never very busy in the pool. We had absolutely no problem with noise in our room. Occasionally we heard people walk by the room, but no different than when staying at CBR, POR or CSR. I have to add that this was our first time staying at a value resort, so I was a little concerned about whether we would like it. Our room was good although a little small, which I expected. It was nice and clean and we had no problems with it. The beds were a little squishier and much smaller than I am used to, but I was comfortable sleeping, but if you are used to a firm bed, you may have a little bit of a problem.

This was the view from our room.

Well, I have put it off as long as I could. I couldn't stall anymore. Dan was ready to ride RNRC. I have a love/hate relationship with this ride. First and foremost, I love this ride. I hate the anticipation for this ride, especially the first ride of the trip. I really am not crazy about the launch but I absolutely love the rest of the ride. I am a bundle of nerves waiting in line. I always go on though because I know I will love it, but it kills me waiting for it.

Here is our pic. I ALWAYS make the same exact face. I can't help it. If you look at all our RNRC pics from over the years, you could cut my face out and stick it on my body and it would be the same. I have to try really hard to do something different next time. As you can see, Dan has no problem doing something different!

Based on my clothes, we must have gone back to the room to take a break. I guess next time I will have to take better notes!

After RNRC, I needed a change of pace. We went to to One Man's Dream for some some relaxin'. I kind of remember only making it through half of the exhibit because the movie was starting. We watched the movie and then I think we headed back to the room. When we came back in the evening we finished up the exhibit. I have a ton of pics here!

I make the exact same face on RNRC! I have to scream. I tried not screaming once and thought I was going to throw up lol... Screaming makes the launch not as bad... I think. Or maybe it's all in my head :lookaroun who knows!

I LOVE One Man's Dream. I could stay in there and look around for hours I think.

The nighttime tripod pics at MK are great. I especially like the ones of the carousel and the last one of the castle. Saying goodbye to MK is always bittersweet

Our second trip through I tried the screaming thing lol! That has helped me on some other coasters! That is so funny. On the second trip I think I kept my eyes open but we missed the picture. Our car was held up at the end and by the time we got out our pic had already passed. We didn't feel like waiting in line to try and have the CM find it. We will never know!

Dan and I both love One Man's Dream too. In fact he saw me posting these pics and he said the same thing as you. "I could spend hours in there!"

Glad you like the nighttime pics. It was my first attempt doing the timed exposures in the MK. Have done some at home but never there. Wish I was more committed to taking my tripod to the parks but ugh....I don't want to lug it around!

During the past couple trips, we have missed VOTLM. This trip I wanted to make it a priority to see it again. When we finished with OMD it was nearly showtime.

It was time for another ride on RNRC. This time I didn't have quite the anxiety I had for the first ride. Only a little nervous!

DisneyTripNov20111131.jpg

DisneyTripNov20111127.jpg

I think I made a better face for this photo. I tried really hard to keep my eyes open but alas, we never saw the picture. We sat in our car at the end of the ride for about 5 minutes before we got off. By that time, our pic had already passed and we didn't feel like standing in line to search for it.

Now it was time for something we were both waiting for! Osbourne Family Lights! Neither of us had seen them before and they were amazing. Here are a ton of pics! I had to find strategically placed trash cans on which to put my mini tripod.

A really nice CM saw me taking pics and offered to take our pic. This was great because the photopass line was HUGE! There was no way we were standing in that line! Notice Dan's flashy necklace. He is a sucker for all things flashy and is constantly trying to see if they will induce epileptic seizures in me! This was a cute necklace but was a little obnoxious on full flashy mode. Luckily it had a fade on/off mode which was much nicer!

By this time, DHS was officially closed. We slowly made our way to the exit taking so pics on our way. Sorry for some of the pics aren't too straight. It is tough to line up the camera when it is so close to the ground!

Guess I should photoshop the trashcan out of this one.

We made it back to POP around 9:30 pm. We had packing to do, but first more pictures and some dinner!

In the Everything Pop store

DisneyTripNov20111189.jpg

For dinner I opted for a cheeseburger with fries and Dan had the cheesesteak wrap with pasta salad. The wrap was a little sparse in filling but tasted good. The cheeseburger was good (not as good as Pecos Bill's though). For dessert I had carrot cake and Dan had the worms and dirt.

DisneyTripNov20111196.jpg

After dinner, I took some pics in the lobby and out front before going back to the room for my regular tripod.

With tripod in hand we headed out one more time for some POP night shots. Some of these may be repeats but I thought they came out a little better than my ones from earlier in the trip.
Poor Lady was being refurbed so I only got a pic of Tramp.

Guess it is time to pack and call it a night :(

The next morning we got up, gathered up our remaining stuff and I took a couple pics of our clean again room. I neglected to take any when I first got there. Yes I did make the bed before I took the pic :) Had to make it look a little like it did when we first got there. Oops! Forgot to take the towel off the rack!

We made our way to the Resort Airline Checkin area. This was the first time we were able to use this service and it was a breeze! We had never flown with a participating airline before this trip. There was no line. We dropped off the luggage, they gave us our boarding passes, we handed in our carry-ons for temporary holding and we were off to our breakfast ressies in record time. Whole process took less than 10 min.

We had ressies at Kona Cafe this morning. We took the MK bus and were going to take the monorail from there to the Poly. I knew we were in trouble when we pulled up to the MK bus stops and saw buses for the Poly and the Contemporary. Actually, I thought it was wierd but it didn't quite register that they shouldn't be there. We went over to the monorail and saw that it was closed. Ugh. This was also a madhouse day at the MK due to the Christmas Parade taping. The crowds lined up to go into the MK were huge. By this time the Poly bus had left and the line for the small boats was super long. We walked to the ferry going to the TTC which had virtually no line. Once at the TTC, we walked to the Poly. I felt bad for the people going to the MK. That line for the ferry was unbelievable! I also felt bad for the people stuck on the monorail. Who knows how long they had been stuck there. Our plan for after breakfast was to resort hop to see the Christmas decorations, but that would depend on the monorail situation!

Some shots from the ferry

Ahhhhh.......the breakfast I had been waiting for! Tonga Toast!

DisneyTripNov20111245.jpg

Dan had the Big Kahuna. He loves the macadamia pineapple pancakes but he wanted other stuff with it. He was a little disappointed by the size of the pancakes. I think next time he will just be getting the huge pancakes.

DisneyTripNov20111246.jpg

At some point during breakfast, I noticed the monorails were running. Yay! We can resort hop!

DisneyTripNov20111247.jpg

Next stop......Grand Floridian!

You have some really great shots! I am super jealous of good photographers, but I just don't have the patience to learn how to use all the functions of my camera or to set up tripods.

I feel the same way about RNRC, but unfortunately, I've always been too nervous to actually ride it! I'm pretty sure I would love it after that takeoff, but I just can't push myself to get on the stupid thing. I probably would if someone else encouraged me to do it, but lately I've been too much of a chicken to go for it.

Tonga Toast!!!!! My faaaaavvvvvv!! Good thing I just got lunch, but my wrap doesn't even compare to the glory of Tonga Toast.

Great TR!!:sohappy:

Thank you! I am glad you are enjoying it! I get a few good shots but I have far more not so good ones. I keep practicing so I hope to always be improving. The tripod is a pain but it is worth it to get some neat shots. I won't lug the big one to the parks though. I am not that committed to good photography

RNRC is so worth it even though I get so nervous about it. Years ago, I made my husband go on it first. He got off it and said that I could do it. He is usually a good judge of what my comfort zone is. I trusted him and tried it out and the rest is history! The launch only lasts about 2 seconds and the rest of the ride is awesome! Its very smooth, no big drops, and because it is inside the upside down parts are not bad at all.

I agree with you on the Tonga Toast! That is the only thing that I absolutely make sure I get each trip.

Stay tuned! I hope to finish the report tonight or at the very latest this weekend!

We hopped the monorail over to the Grand Floridian to check out the tree and the gingerbread house.

After we got off the monorail, I had to make a stop at Basin. I had never been in that store before. That place is awesome! We bought 5 bars of soap! 3 for us and 2 for Dan's mom. She was puppy sitting for us so we usually try and bring her back some thank you gifts! Of course now that I have these soaps, I don't want to use them because they are so pretty! Maybe I will use them right before we go back on our next trip so I can restock.
