The Super-Duper(Kind Of) Top Secret Surprise Birthday Trip Report

We have returned from our super-duper top secret surprise birthday trip to WDW. Some of you may remember that I wrote a short pre-trip report about this upcoming trip. See here http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=793491. The even shorter version is that I planned a surprise trip to WDW for my husband’s birthday. His birthday is November 28th and I began planning the trip in August. An email to my inbox promoting free dining pretty much made up my mind to set my plan in motion. I proved to be a very bad secret keeper which I pretty much expected lol. But hey, I kept it for about a month which is longer than I thought I could. It didn’t help that everyday Dan would ask me “Where are we going, where are we going???” He kept needling me and finally he asked “Are we going to Disney?” and all I could do was smile. I would lose in a second at poker. So the cat was out of the bag and he knew we were going. Not the grand reveal I wanted, but I really only have myself to blame lol!

So on with the trip! On the morning of Nov 28th we rose dark and early at 2:00 am. We had gotten everything ready the night before but we had some animals to take care of in the morning. The worst part of going on these trips is leaving all our animals behind and hoping they will be all right. We had dropped off our 2 dogs the night before at Dan’s parents house. We also have cats and horses. My friend who boards some horses at our house would be staying the week to take care of them and our cats.

With the pets taken care of and the truck loaded, we were on the road at a bit after 3 am. We had a 6 am flight out of Philadelphia and it takes about an hour to get there. We stopped at Wawa for a quick bite and some coffee! Yum! We arrived at the off-site parking lot at about 4:15 am. We used Winner for parking and I highly recommend them! They take you to the airport in your own car so you don’t have to transfer your bags to a shuttle and wait for a bunch of other people. When you return, they will pick you up in your car and you can either have them drive you back to their parking lot to drop them off or pay a small fee to immediately drive home from the airport and they will find their own way back to their lot.

We flew Southwest for the first time this trip. We usually take Spirit Airlines out of Atlantic City, but their fees have become exorbitant and I can’t justify the convenience of AC over Philly with the large price increases. We paid the extra $10 per ticket for the Early Bird Check in. We were early in the A group for boarding, I think A28 and 29. I really liked this service as I didn’t have to be online 24 hours in advance to get a good boarding position and will def do this again.
Our flight was uneventful (thankfully) and we landed in Orlando a little ahead of schedule. By this time we were a little hungry and didn’t know how long it would be before we would be able to eat so we stopped in a McFood before heading down to the Magical Express buses. Luckily for us, as soon as we got in line they started letting people on the bus for Pop Century, AKL, and CBR. We didn’t even stop in the line and I had no time to get the requisite photo of the ME line. I did get a few photos of the buses though.

On our way to the resort we had a little boy (maybe about 3 or 4 yo) who was so excited to be going to WDW. He was screaming his excitement right in our ears the whole trip. Everytime a new character came on the video, he went CRAZY. He was standing on the floor with his mouth right near our heads. Mom, at least make him sit down! Needless to say it was a long ride . I totally understand his excitement, but I just don’t think we could handle having kids! Although my mom tells me it is different when you have your own….I just don’t know:p. I think it is just her effort to get another grandchild (my sister has one). We were staying a Pop Century this trip and we were the second stop after CBR.

We arrived at PC and checked in. I think we arrived around 10 am and our room was ready. We had done online check-in at home prior to our trip. We were room 9308 which was in the 80’s section. It overlooked the computer pool. It was pretty chilly our entire trip, so it was never very busy in the pool. We had absolutely no problem with noise in our room. Occasionally we heard people walk by the room, but no different than when staying at CBR, POR or CSR. I have to add that this was our first time staying at a value resort, so I was a little concerned about whether we would like it. Our room was good although a little small, which I expected. It was nice and clean and we had no problems with it. The beds were a little squishier and much smaller than I am used to, but I was comfortable sleeping, but if you are used to a firm bed, you may have a little bit of a problem.

This was the view from our room.

I had my sights set on a QS meal from Kringla Bakeri og Kafe. We shared a Norway Club. I got a Cloudberry Horn with the meal and Dan ordered a Cream Puff with fruit as a snack.

After dinner, we headed to the American Pavilion to see how the line was for the last Candlelight Processional showing of the evening. The showtime was 8 pm and it was about 7:30. There was a long line but we figured we would try to get seats and if we didn't that was ok. It turned out that we had no problem getting seats. We were towards the back of the theater but we could see everything. Michael Smith was the narrator. He is a contemporary Christian musician. We hadn't heard of him but he did a really good job. It was a great show and we were glad we were able to see it.

After the Processional, we watched Illuminations. I didn't take any pics this time as we didn't have a great viewing spot and we just wanted to enjoy it. We loved the Holiday version! Illuminations is my fav Disney nighttime show!

DisneyTripNov2011694.jpg

We went back to POP. Since it was still relatively early, I wanted to walk around the resort and get some nighttime pics.

We started this day at Pop food court for breakfast. Dan just had a bagel with cream cheese and some juice (no pic). I had the french toast with sausage. It was just ok. The Pop waffle was MUCH better! Also, still no refillable mugs. This was our 3rd day here and I was starting to get annoyed. Again they told us that this was a resort wide problem. No resort had them and they thought that they were getting a new design in for Christmas.

DisneyTripNov2011713.jpg

We got an earlier start than yesterday, but not early enough to beat the lines at the bus stop. I think we had to wait for two buses before we finally got on. We arrived at MK shortly after opening.

DisneyTripNov2011715.jpg

I had never really gotten any pics of the Minnie and Roy statues on Main Street so I was looking forward to taking a few. There was a family taking some pics so I patiently was waiting till they left. After they left, this dingus comes and plops himself on the bench just to hang out. He was all by himself and just sitting there. Who the hell does that? There were plain old unoccupied benches all over the place. What a doofus! 5 minutes later he just up and left. Wasn't even waiting for anybody.

We knew that Space Mountain would already be crowded so we decide to try for Big Thunder Mountain RR. We took our time getting there and I took a few pics along the way. By my pics, I think we took the "scenic" route!

Finally we arrive at our destination! I don't think we waited more than 10 min.

DisneyTripNov2011750.jpg

We briefly considered going on Splash Mountain but it was pretty chilly and neither of us relished the idea of getting wet. Actually, Dan probably would have gone for it if I really wanted to but no thank you! It would have been a walk on too. We watched a lot of boats come down empty! Disappointing because we missed it last Jan due to it being down for maintenance.

We were gettin' hungry so it was time for Columbia Harbor House. I went for the fried shrimp and fish basket and Dan was a bit more adventurous with the Lighthouse sandwich. The fish and shrimp was excellent and the portion was huge. I think Dan helped me finish it. He liked his sandwich. He said it was different but really good. It was sundried tomato hummus with broccoli slaw and tomato. We had the Apple Cobbler for dessert! Loved it!!

DisneyTripNov2011832.jpg

Off towards Tomorrowland! Yes, we do skip around a lot!

Love this sign!

After a restful nap it was time for a Christmas Party!! We had attended a MNNSHP a couple years ago and loved it so we were really looking forward to MVMCP! We got to the MK a little after 4pm.

DisneyTripNov2011866.jpg

We couldn't remember the last time we took a leisurely ride on the train and saw that it was just pulling up to the station. We hopped on for a ride.

We were getting a little hungry by now and also wanted to eat before the festivities got into full swing. We hadn't eatten at Pinnochio's Village house in forever. In fact, I think the last time we ate there they had the standard hamburger fare.

Dan had the tomato basil soup which he said was great! I am not crazy about tomato soup, so I took his word for it. He is a tomato nut.

DisneyTripNov2011876.jpg

For his meal, he had the chicken parm with penne pasta. Again, he loved it. It was a HUGE portion. We probably could have split it.

DisneyTripNov2011880.jpg

I had the meatball sandwich, which was surprisingly good as well.

DisneyTripNov2011877.jpg

I think we had the standard chocolate cake for dessert but I can't remember.

By the time we were done dinner, it was starting to get dark. The castle was all lit up!

DisneyTripNov2011883.jpg

We were going to catch the 2nd parade after Holiday Wishes so we had some time to do some attractions.

First up Monsters Inc Laugh Floor. I don't care what anyone says, I really like this show. It always makes me laugh! We had a great audience with people who really got into the show.

Now time for our first (and only) ride on SM this trip! I totally forgot that they take your pic now! I was totally not ready LOL.

DisneyTripNov2011900.jpg

I took a few pics in Tomorrowland with my mini tripod. I really wanted to take some night time tripod pics on this trip, but I just couldn't bring myself to lug that big tripod with me into the parks. I have a little mini one which worked out well for me but it was a little challenging to set up at times. I am sure many people looked at me as I was laying on the ground trying to make sure the camera was straight. I wasn't always successful lining up the camera but I think I got a few good shots this trip.

DisneyTripNov2011905.jpg

DisneyTripNov2011902.jpg

I really like how this shot came out!

DisneyTripNov2011921.jpg

Merry Christmas!

DisneyTripNov2011925.jpg

The time for Holiday Wishes was quickly approaching so we went to stake out a spot. I wanted a good spot to set up my little tripod with out a bunch of people standing in front of me so we went down by the old boat launch past the rose garden. There was absolutely no one down there. I didn't realize that we would be so off center for the big fireworks. I guess that is why there aren't more people down there. I got some decent shots. I probably will never get great fireworks shots because I don't want to stake out a great spot 2 hours ahead of time just to get some pics! We only get to the world once a year at most sometimes less. Too much to do, too little time!

Before the parade, we stopped for some cookies and cocoa. Both were quite yummy. Wish the cookies were warm though. They were very cold like they had just come out of the fridge.

DisneyTripNov2011915.jpg

Time for a parade! We probably should have gone to Frontierland to catch the parade, but we were close to Main Street and found a spot. It was pretty crowded and hard to take pics. Most of my pics came out too dark so I only will put a couple on here.

Loved the horses!

I know at some point in the evening we went on Peter Pan. I think we may have done Pirates and HM also but my memory is fading! Unfortunately this would be our last time in the MK for this trip. Thursday we planned to go to DHS and on our departure day Friday the Christmas Parade taping is planned for the MK. From what I have heard, if we are not interested in attending the taping, stay away from MK that day! Ugh! We always like to go to MK on our departure day, but alas not this time!!

Goodnight MK! Until we meet again...

DisneyTripNov2011999.jpg

I like that you can see the Photopass photographer in this pic! Also the scooter made a neat light stripe down the side.

And here we are already. Thursday....our last full day at the World. Today was DHS day. We didn't bother stopping for breakfast at the Pop food court because we had another breakfast in our sights! We got in line for the bus and were soon on our way to the Studios.

DisneyTripNov20111001.jpg

DisneyTripNov20111002.jpg

We got there about a half hour after opening, so we made our way to TSMM to get a couple fastpasses.

We stopped for some pics along the way.

DisneyTripNov20111005.jpg

DisneyTripNov20111006.jpg

After getting the fastpasses it was time for breakfast!

DisneyTripNov20111007.jpg

That's right! Starring Rolls! I am not sure Dan's chocolate chip cookie and chocolate muffin make a nutritious breakfast, but my huge cinnamon bun sure did! It's vacation right? Calories don't count on vacation.

After breakfast we went over to Star Tours. Dan is a huge Star Wars fan and was excited to see the ride after the refurb.

DisneyTripNov20111010.jpg

There was no wait at all and we walked right on which left no time for pics! Dan loved the revamped ride. We went on again right away since there was no wait. We had two totally different sequences each time.

Next we went to see the Muppets.

Now it was time to rustle up some grub before our TSMM fastpass time.

We decided on the Studio Catering Co. I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and I think Dan had the Pressed Tuscan Deli sandwich. Mine was just ok. Not really what I was expecting for a Buffalo Chicken sandwich. It was just fried chicken breast with a buffalo type sauce on it. I have def had better. Dan said his was good. Maybe I should have gotten that! His had melted provolone and some sort of meat (maybe salami). We both had marbled cheesecake for dessert.

After lunch it was time for TSMM! We found this guy before we got in line.
