The Spirited Seventh Heaven ...

Calling Pleasure Island a theme park is a real stretch...

Ticketed or not, it was not a theme park.

Why? Because people can only comprehend a themed entertainment experience to be one anchored by RIDES?

Was it a purpose built complex built to entertain people? Yes
Was it purpose built with the ideas of connecting themes, story, and purpose? Yes
Did it include attractions and experiences to entertain? Yes
Did it have distinct boundaries for what was included in the property or not? Yes

Another fine example of only knowing how to copy vs understanding the core principles that differentiate the creation.

I was never a Maelstrom fan, it was not something I ever felt a huge need to go and ride. Especially if there was any kind of line. But the pavillion was what is should've been. Could the ride and movie use some sprucing? Yes. But completely retheming it to Frozen? I think Norway can just be turned into the 'Princess Pavillion" since it already hosts the Princess meals in the restaurant. I'd much rather see this in DHS. That park needs every IP and attraction it can get.

I think an alternative to what they're probably going to do could've been to maybe show similarities in the landscapes of Frozen to what is in reality Norway for the movie. There could be a tie in without it being so overwhelmingly Frozen themed. Have Olaf and the moose host it and call it a day. Maybe people will actually sit through the movie instead of fleeing towards the exits. It would still keep the integrity of the pavillion, people would watch the movie and it would still have that all important tie-in.

I just keep thinking as I read some of the previous posts that for WDW to be anything like the place it used to be, they need to find people to head the company up who grew up with it in its heyday. Those who 'get it'. What Epcot is supposed to be. What MK is supposed to be. Why people don't want to see constant DVC booths and empty, closed areas. Do away with the excessive money grabs and provide a quality experience that doesn't need all the add ons to make money for them. And cut the losses on MM+ now and end it. Go back to being able to make meal reservations day of. Go back to walkups being able to eat at places that aren't solely CS.

Go back to the drawing board with DHS and try to cobble together a park worthy of using a ticket on. Even in the late 90s, it was a half day park at best with everything open. So many missed opportunies there and so many places to use all the IPs they're trying to shove into Epcot. And they actually fit in a park about movies...

Many of the early amusement parks centered around dancing with the rides being a later addition.

I'll be honest, I wasn't following the argument around PI being a theme park and I'm not even sure why it came up here. I was just making a lame joke about seeing amusing things there. If you guys want to say it was an amusement park or a theme park that's fine with me. I won't disagree. Can't say I care either way.

Interesting but irrelevant factoid. By that logic, the middle school's fall dance, complete with orange and brown color scheme and themed pumpkin decorations, is an amusement park?
Sports stadiums must be theme parks too. They charge admission, have themed nights, some offer fireworks displays after games, they have retail shops, some have attractions/museums inside (Yankee Stadium comes to mind). Even have foam heads. Theme parks, all of them!

I never said dancing was the only amusement, just often a central one. There is also the matter of the dedicated park space that is denoted by the second word in the term. The decorations and theme you describe are also an example of themed decor and not themed experience. Themed decor is not a defining characteristic of amusement parks or theme parks.

Where does the sports stadium try to convey you to be besides at the sports stadium itself? Decorations are not theme..

A stadium may be decorated and set to a style - but it's purpose is still to be a facility to host a competition.

You seem confused with STYLE...

Are what the stadiums specifically refer to as "theme nights" themes? Please do tell me more about theme!!

Throwing a themed party at your house does not make your house a themed entertainment complex... and neither does having your fans dress a certain way redefine what the stadium is.

You keep missing even simple criteria I listed in the first post.

They are more often themed decor, not themed experience.
Just one example from a 30 second Google search. http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/phi/ticketing/theme/star_wars.jsp
  • Fans will be treated to intergalactic fun and have the chance to join the Rebel Alliance at Citizens Bank Park!
  • Coming from a galaxy far, far away, Darth Vader will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
  • A host of STAR WARS characters, compliments of the 501st Legion and Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club, will roam the ballpark concourse as well as perform with the Phanatic.
Yeah, no themed experiences here.

Where is the entire evening being redone to create a sense of being in the Star Wars universe?

Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope! You're also pitching tonight.

I am not writing off "themed entertainment". I once, during a national parks tour, scheduled an overnight stay at the Luxor in Las Vegas with a side trip to the Hilton for the Star Trek Experience. Awesome BTW, So, we visited every national park between Albuquerque NM and home in Wisconsin and what do the kids remember? My son ordered the "flaming ribs of Targ" at Quark's Bar after being transported to the bridge of the enterprise.

Glendale. Glendale is where the Don sits. And unless you're planning on cleaning house with management, theres nothing that can be done.

Which is not to say I dont miss the days of walk ups to a sit down restaurant. There's a lot of things that I miss.

Most of all, I miss a simple place where everyone could have fun and not feel like every dollar was milked out of me.

This is the kind of impression the company is being oblivious to in their quest for "well people are willing to pay for it!" mentality. Disney wasn't cheap, but you felt you got value for your dollar for the type of service and product you got in return. Now you feel like everywhere you turn Disney has their hand out...
