Because the smartphone path is cruising for a bruising. Notice how the article says Hilton hasn't even got a system to promote yet? And things are 1-2 years away?

The reason for doing something like the MagicBand is CONTROL. Disney doesn't want to invest all that time and money and be locked to vendors and products it has ZERO control over.

What happens when Apple releases a new phone that ditched the hardware you built your system around? Or releases a new version that breaks your app?

The smartphone life cycle is less than 4 years... and more like 2. Imagine trying to keep your entire infrastructure up to date and DEPENDENT on a technology that changes that quickly with zero input from you.

And let's talk about putting your system onto a smartphone that the user controls.. not you.

You don't base your business on consumer technology supplied by other people unless you are prepared to refresh your own products at the same rate.

A system like Hilton's would probably end up working via the network vs via the phone. Or they could do things like ultrasound, etc.

I understand what you’re saying, but Disney must to do that anyway. Their hardware and software must be able to interact with the current standard, whether it is smartphones or whatever comes after it. They must be able to read, understand and talk to their customers that are holding the latest and greatest. Failure to keep up to date will prevent Disney from interacting tech wise with their customers who have ditched their iphones for something new. Magicbands or not, Disney will have to continually upgrade their hardware and software to keep up.

That brings up a problem with the route WDW has taken. Disney is now beholden to tech that is constantly changing. If ten years form now the standard communication technology is incompatible with the current tech, then Disney must upgrade or trash the whole system.

You are right. But to be fair, Disney thinks it needs to have control over everything!
Does this include monitoring which bathroom I frequent the most? I'm serious, the arm band makes me extremely uncomfortable. I took it off every chance I could, which caused me to be locked out of my room more than once.

Changes and advances in what consumers are using do not impact the hardware of the MagicBands and RFID cards. Disney will have to change the apps and website but they will not have to so consistently replace the hardware that had to upgraded around property so long as they can maintain the proper communication between their databases and the hardware.

I still think Disney needs to sell D-Tech+ cases, a phone case with the guts and functionality of a MagicBand.

Comments like this make me wish I could make time go faster. Just 6 months to go till Disneyland............

(-)14 hours for me... and somehow feel like I'll power through and be up in 6 or so hours for round two...

Also will follow up with my thoughts for @WDW1974. I'll try and keep a random list on my iPhone for when I settle back down with internet, sleep and the pixie dust high wears off.

I don't know that answer, but just off-hand I'd say it is highly unlikely. Like I said, fans are only interested in what they are interested in. Big real-world issues generally send them running in another direction.

I sorta gave up on the topic here (before @the.dreamfinder 's great post) because it wasn't garnering much conversation. Fans are interested in seeing a new Star Wars film. They don't care about any real world implications about where it was lensed and why.

Can you imagine ANY rabid Star Wars fanboi (even members of the LGBT community) skipping the film because of where parts of it were filmed?

Hypocrisy makes the world go around!
It is strange that nothing is being said about it. What's stranger still is that fans of animated disney films seem to have a far more critical eye. If you go through tumblr the latest is that Big hero 6 is being accused of white washing, rapunzel and elsa model reusing, among other complaints. They are not afraid to slam the film, then again bh6 doesn't have a dedicated fanbase yet.

That's just Tumblr's social justice warriors, not indicative of animation fans as a whole. In fact the "____ looks like Rapunzel" became a meme after the whining began.

I think there is an understandable lack of information. It's not like anyone is promoting it. :)

Fans of any major film series are going to be critical of any element that alters their vision of what makes the best possible movie, hence all the debating. Since political turmoil and human rights violations don't change the outcome of movie, that's not going to be on anyone's radar.

I'm not willing to judge anyone else just yet, until I learn a little more. In the meantime, can I guarantee that all my food is cruelty free? Or every article of clothing was made by a worker who made a fair wage? Every gallon of gas I pump can from a country free from these human rights violations?

It's a lot to take in. Now I can't even read Harry Potter without worrying about who built Rowling's typewriter.

With theme parks, I don't think it's an issue of quality of product. That speaks more of an economic malaise.
I can't help but think that O-Town will be a ghost town in a matter of weeks and, largely, will be like that until October ...
Please keep it that way.

And if your economy tanks again please don't involve the rest of the world this time. We're doing just fine now.

Thanks.

Just curious Spirit, but, why wouldn't they? If you owned a business wouldn't you want to control everything that you could? Isn't that just good sense to do whatever you can to insure success? All I can think of is that without that you have the "tail wagging the dog" syndrome.
