Hey!
Look, I wasn't talking to all of you guyz. I appreciate the answers that I recieved and now I know what I was asking. I was just pointing out to one or two people thats all. I know I don't own these forums, but come on, at least keep it kind of related!

Okay, 2 things -

First - Jer, you might want to chill...you should see the drifts on my college bands board. They are insane! At least we're pretty much near the topic! :animwink: :)

Rob, I was also thinking that the Studio theme was "old-school" Hollywood.... Has there been a huge theme-change since my last visit?

To whom were you talking to then, cause you qouted me, and I have been participating as well. I responded to a joke before my post, I'm sorry others ran with it, but what is the deal, based on your original question, you should find humor in it.

Hey!
If you don't want your threads drifting, don't start threads. It happens, people like to have fun. Someone said something, I decided to play along with it. It's ok, a quick tug will unbunch em.

There are 18 thousand threads here, 281 thousand posts, ever wonder why? People like to drift in threads. Here, any board, anywhere. You've had an attitude since you came here. I would suggest taking cymbal's advice....chill out.

A post like this shows that you are pretty new to message boards....as EVERY message board drifts off into space like this occasionally.

You have to learn some serious people skills, my young one.

Since the hat is at MGM, and there is an hand with a wand attached to "that spaceball", I assume there will be a giant pair of yellow shoes straddling Cinderella's castle and a robe hanging from the Tree in AK soon. And giant anamorphic brooms carrying buckets of water in each resort complex. Anyone bored enough to imagine this?

I was over at MousePlanet today and saw this posted in the reader mail section. This may add some discussion on this thread...

John says:

Enjoyed your photo essay on Hollywood Blvd. And, of course, agree with you strongly about the hat. In spades.

Here's what I found out about it. Perhaps someone has information that trumps this, but what I know came from a senior Imagineer in Glendale (one of the few still around!) whose primary job includes Disney-MGM Studios:

The hat was originally supposed to be outside the entry gate, but because of ingress/egress concerns from the park in the event of an emergency, its location was moved. When it was finally built, the hat ended up costing much more than originally anticipated. More than that, the cost of tearing it down is steep. Too steep for the tastes of the bean counters who run the parks. So the deal as it stands now is to keep the hat up for about another year before bringing it down again.

At least, that's the *plan*. As you've learned, the days of spending money to make money at the parks are long past (thank you, Michael Eisner and Paul Pressler), and given that there hasn't been a huge outcry about the ugliness and inappropriateness of the hat from guests, they may decide to keep it up a bit longer.

The best news, though, is that the hat was designed to be temporary. It was never intended as a permanent structure. At least, so says Imagineering. Theme Parks may have a different view!

I asked a cast member about the hat during my recent trip and he said that it was expected to remain for ten years.

I hope you're right, John, and he's dead wrong.

Here's the concept art.

I do not see this hat going down after another year considering it is EXTREMELY popular--most people love it, and it has already been declared the park icon, added to those four icons shirts, that show the Castle, Tree of Life, Spaceship Earth, and the Sorcerer Mickey Hat...consider it permanent.

Heading for the great escape.
The only problem with that design is that if you put the sign there people wont be able to get in to by pins.

How about putting it on a pole at the very top, then you could have it revolving, and perhaps have the HEY flash a different colour so peoples attention is drawn to the park.

Anything's possible...it's just concept art for now

Sadly, it was very tough to see the Earfel Tower, as it was built in the back of the park, really only visible from the Studios Backlot Tour. Park icons need to be visible from the park entrance and symbolic of the park.

Huh? What Earfel Tower are you talking about. I can see the ET from World Drive. There is a baby ET on the Back Lot tour and I agree you do get a much better view of the big one from the BLT.:)

When i worked at the studios this past summer, i was told on my first day of work when i was getting a tour of the park that the hat would not be taken down, it is the new icon for the park.

You cannot see the Earfel Tower from the park entrance; you cannot see it from most points inside the park, for that matter. I do not deny that you can see the Tower from World Drive, but that really doesn't matter if you can't see it from most of the park...you can see the hat from probably...60% of the park. The Chinese Theater worked pretty well from that respect, but it doesn't make you think of the Park, because it's a clone...all the other icons are Disney Originals.

>>>The Chinese Theater worked pretty well from that respect, but it doesn't make you think of the Park, because it's a clone...all the other icons are Disney Originals.<<<

But what Disney is trying to recreate is not by any means an original product of their own either. Hollywood existed a long time before Disney, and it will continue to exist long after Disney has quit being a major player in the town (even though for the most part that has already happened).

The other park icons are indeed Disney creations, but that is because they represent a product that Disney created on their own. The Castles represent Disney's own magical kingdoms, the Tree of Life represents Disney's own animal park, Spaceship Earth represents Disney's own view of the future, etc.

But then there's Hollywood. This is a real town, a real place, and it's not Disney's own product. Sure, you can clean it up, window dress parts of it, and take a few liberties with the placement of landmarks, but when you add your own "landmarks" that have nothing to do with the subject you are replicating, it is somewhat frowned upon. When it is blatantly a tacky icon that is purposely disrupting the theme of the area, it just gets worse and worse.

If Disney was creating their own fantasy studio where everything is "magical," then a 12 story hat would probably fit in. But this is Hollywood, not a Disney world (no pun intended). Either do it faithfully or don't do it at all.

I don't have a problem with the hat. Any Disney related icon will always have a place in any Disney park. Think about it.

Not so sure they are going for Hollywood anymore here...more of just a working set, which is the only way that the back half of the park seems to make sense. From that viewpoint, disney can take whatever liberties they want. The question is: is this park set in the 1930s or is it set in present day, recreating that time with actors, facades, etc. I'm tempted to think the latter, which, again, allows disney to use their own discretion on everything in this park, play around with locations, build their own structures, whatever they want. The reason I am lead to believe this involves some of the latest creations, especially Rock 'n' Roller Coaster--an ultramodern attraction (it is themed as a modern recording studio) still set in what we would like to consider a 1930s section of the park.
