It is my pleasure as the Imagineering Project Manager for the 50th Birthday Celebrations for the Walt Disney World Resort to provide you with a peak at the festivities. We have been very hard at work to make this the greatest celebration in Walt Disney World history and we believe that you will be amazed at what you see. For this celebration, we realized we must go further then celebrating Disney itself, but we need to celebrate everything that makes up the Disney Experience. This lead to our Slogan. Celebrate Family, Celebrate Yourself, Celebrate Disney

At the core of every Disney Park is Family and yourselves, these are the people that come back year after year. They share their experiences inviting others to share with them. Without them, there would be no Disney World, so thank you for the last 50 years.

First on our agenda is the new introduction along with the plans for each park. These four new posters celebrate Disney and showcase the past parts of all four of our parks.

MAGIC KINGDOM
14c8twz.png
Frontierland -
  • Thunder Mountain will be getting a brand new refurbishment to add new scenes and new track similar to Disneyland’s Thunder Mountain. The exit will be changed to allow a pathway to the new Fronteirland area.
  • Mink Fink Keelboats reopens in the spot previously inhabited by The Rafts to Tom Sawyer Island. These Keelboats will go around the lower island.
  • The American Journey uses a water omnimover system to take guests on a journey with Lewis and Clark from the East Coast to the West. Guests will be able to pass by exciting scenes with deer, bears, and much more wildlife as well as Native American villages, and some scenes revived with new life from the old Nature’s Wonderland attraction. This attraction will be replacing Tom Sawyer Island, and the upper portion of Rivers of America. The entrance will be closer to Liberty Square, and the exit being closer to Thunder Mountain.
  • Expedition Depot hosts a new small show involving various pieces of costumes, dance, and music from Native American tribes found along the route that Lewis and Clark took. This show will be going onto the lower portion of Tom Sawyer Island
Liberty Square -
  • The Liberty Belle will now serve as a Cajun Table Service with a Princess and the Frog Theme.
Main Street USA –
  • Aluminessence is a brand new night time parade equipped with LED Lights to light up. Some of the highlights for the parade is the Under the Sea Unit where Ariel will seem to be swimming similar to Tinker Bell in Paint the Night. Another highlight is the wild Lion King Jungle Unit where guests are treated to a vibrant environment seen from I Just Can’t Wait to Be King. Overall this new parade will be sure to dazzle guests of the present to the future.
  • Memories is a brand new nighttime spectacular involving state of the art projections, lasers, and fireworks. This new firework show will take you through some of the memories from Disney films such as Be Our Guest, I See the Light, Let It Go, Circle of Life, and more!

Celebrating 50 Years Young at Walt Disney World

Imagine standing here over 50 years ago. You'd be standing in the middle of a humid Floridian swamp. But there was something in this desolate land that stood out to the man we know as Walt Disney, and so it was that he introduced the "Florida Project". Once Walt Disney World had been dedicated by Roy Disney, Walt's brother, the world stared in awe at its inspiring grandeur.

The man himself once said, "Disneyland will never be completed as long as there is imagination left in the world." When Walt said this, most believe this was directed at the fact that Disneyland (as well as Disney Parks around the globe) will always be expanding. However, this growth is fueled by the imagination that Walt Disney World provides. The magic that stays with every single guest is a profound tool that allows the resort to continue it's growth. Throughout the past 50 years, some things have changed: paint schemes, buildings, attractions, and cuisine. However, the essence of Walt Disney World-- the "magic"-- has remained the same throughout the decades gone by, and stays with the billions of guests that have visited and will continue to visit the Walt Disney World Resort.

With this realization, Team Mickey has succeeded in creating a "Convincing Campaign" that simultaneously includes elements of nostalgia, legacy, and looking forward into the future. Our campaign focuses on the fact that the magic of Walt Disney World will always linger and can infinitely remain in our hearts despite the continual change and growth of the resort throughout its history. We want to focus on the fact that the magic will continue to stick with our parents, our children, and our children's children-- as long as there is imagination left in the world.

BRANDING

To evoke the powerful feeling of a park steeped in 50 years of colorful history, we used a "retro" Walt Disney World typeface in a gold and brown color scheme for the logo and poster design. A simple text logo provides a clean and timeless look, to which park visitors from 50 years into the past and the future would be able to relate.

MERCHANDISE

With an occasion such as this one comes the opportunity for specialty merchandise. Aside from the obvious t-shirts, shot glasses, and mugs that will bear the logos and imagery of the celebration, we wish to highlight a few items that will be highly prized and even limited collectables.

50th Anniversary Mouse Ears

These one of a kind hats will only be available at the Magic Kingdom. Modeled to look like the ones sold on opening day, they will certainly spark fond memories with veteran guests. Aside from the vintage look, they will have the "50th" emblem sewn inside to mark the celebration. These will be available all year.

Limited Gold Trading Pins
Pin trading has become a very popular hobby, and even brings people together from around the globe. For this celebration, a special run of 12 pins will be made for collectors and traders. This set will feature Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Donald, Daisy, Snow White, Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, Cinderella’s Castle, The "50th" logo, and Walt Disney himself. These will be released at the rate of one per month, to increase public interest and commemorate each month of this yearlong celebration.

Orange Bird
A celebration of the origins of Walt Disney World would not be complete without acknowledging the Orange Bird. This little bird with an orange for a head and leaves for wings was the symbol of the Florida orange growers and the mascot of Disney’s Florida Project. Guest will be able to purchase figurines, key chains, and drink bottles that feature the charming little bird’s image. One item that is sure to be a hit is the Orange Bird Dole Whip Bowl, available in Adventureland. These items will be available from June through September, as the summer time is the perfect time to enjoy Florida’s famous citrus fruit.

Opening Day Map
On October 1st only, a very special item will be available. The park maps used in the Magic Kingdom will have artwork that resembles the opening day map. This is a way for guests to see through the eyes of opening day guests and commemorate the very special day. The best part about this item is that it's absolutely free (although high-quality prints of the actual opening day map will be available for a small price). This way everyone in the park that day can take home a small piece of history and remember the day they spent with their families. As this is for the official anniversary, it will only be available for the one day.

General 50th anniversary items can be purchased at the resorts and other parks, but the maps and Mouse Ears will only be available at the Magic Kingdom. These are just a few of the hundreds of specialty items that will be offered to celebrate the occasion.

GOLDEN DREAMS: A 50th FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR

A 50th anniversary tag will be coming to Illuminations in Epcot, but the main new nighttime spectacular coming to Walt Disney World will be Golden Dreams in the Magic Kingdom. It will be comprised of four movements.

The show will consist of fireworks, assorted pyrotechnic effects, and lighting elements projected directly onto several buildings in the park (not just Cinderella Castle). It begins with a fanfare, and one large golden rain shell upon the conclusion of the musical phrase. The first movement will be highlighting the conceptual and construction phase of Walt Disney World, and guests will be able to watch Main Street and the Castle be "built" from the ground up. The second movement begins with the opening day dedication speech from Roy Disney. This movement follows similar themes with clips of attractions throughout history, leading up to the present.

The third movement is the slowest, again with music and clips from throughout the years. Clips from guests' home movies that have been submitted to Disney will be spliced into this part of the show. The focus of this portion is recognizing the impact Walt Disney World has had on the lives of everyone who has ever visited.

The finale will be an up tempo movement with an emphasis on continuing the legacy of the resort. In typical firework display fashion we end with large effects that move more quickly. Just before the end, we hear a clip of Walt Disney say “That’s the problem with the world, too many people grow up." Just after this is a series of majestic explosions, and the music triumphantly concludes.

NEW ATTRACTIONS AND REFURBISHMENTS

Magic Kingdom - New Frontierland and Refurbished Attractions
As part of the 50th Celebration at Walt Disney World, New Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom will expand one of the most popular lands in the park with a high-capacity, people-eating dark ride that will help balance out capacity issues. This ride will be located in the space behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Country Bear Jamboree, Splash Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will all receive heavy refurbishments to update Animatronics, effects, and maintenance. Several attractions at Magic Kingdom Park will receive either heavy or light refurbishments. Among the attractions to receive lots of work are Space Mountain, Peter Pan's Flight, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and (of course) Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, and Country Bear Jamboree as part of New Frontierland. Other attractions such as Mickey's Phillharmagic, Jungle Cruise, Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, and The Enchanted Tiki Room will receive minor refurbishments.

Epcot - Re-Imagined Journey into Imagination and Refurbished Attractions
Let's celebrate the return of Dreamfinder! As part of Walt Disney World's 50th Celebration, Journey Into Imagination With Figment will be reworked to include Dreamfinder, bringing back one of the most loved dynamic duos in Disney history. At Epcot, several attractions will receive enhancements. The Universe of Engergy, Living with the Land, Soarin', and Frozen Ever After will receive minor to major upgrades and refurbishments.

Disney's Hollywood Studios - NEW Disney's Hollywood Studios
Despite being completed almost a year before the actual birthday of Walt Disney World, the "New Disney's Hollywood Studios" will be marketed with the Walt Disney World 50th Celebration. Featuring a re-branding of the park as Disney Hollywood Adventure, the expansion will add more Star Wars, Pixar, and Jim Henson properties. In addition, The Great Movie Ride and Toy Story Midway Mania will receive updates.

Disney's Animal Kingdom - Refurbished Attractions
Disney's Animal Kingdom will receive the least amount of work, having just come off of a spectacular expansion 4 years before. New attractions are planned for several year after the celebration, but are not marketed or announced during the 50th. Kilimanjaro Safaris, Pandora: The World of Avatar's main E-Ticket and C-Ticket, Expedition Everest (to finally fix the Yeti), and Dinosaur will all receive major refurbishments.

Everything Else - New Water slides, New Restaurant and so much more!
Finally, as part of the 50th Celebration, new experiences will open their doors across the resort. From a new water slide at each water park to several brand new restaurants opening at Disney Springs, 2021 will be a year of excitement.

POSTERS

Visitors to Walt Disney World will be able to purchase four Limited Edition Campaign Posters at multiple locations in the park during the 50th Anniversary Celebration. The posters can be purchased as a set or separately, and are a true collector's item for anyone from the most casual to the most devoted Walt Disney World fan. Each of the first three posters features a greyscale historical image of Walt Disney World's planning, construction, and opening, with a famous quote in the foreground in a gold color scheme, in varying sizes of text. The last poster features an image of the Magic Kingdom in the present day, and looks into the future.

The posters are printed on high-quality paper which is cut away to the letters, which are created from slightly shiny material to evoke a true "golden" feeling.

BANNER ADVERTISEMENTS

As well as the four posters, we created "banner ads" designed to be displayed on websites. In today's world where the Internet is the primary source of media, it is important to advertise online in order to reach the largest possible group of people. One benefit of banner ads is that they can be used to reach a specific target audience.

The two banner ads are based on Posters 2 and 4.

443778_orig.png

7797780_orig.png

VIDEO ADVERTISEMENT

To further promote and commemorate the anniversary, we created a 2:00 long video advertisement that will be the first in a series of ads with the same theme. This is the "long" version of the advertisement-- the "short" version, which is more frequently played, runs from 0:55 to the end.

The ad begins with Walt Disney explaining his vision for the Magic Kingdom. It runs through a construction montage, and fades to black after Roy Disney's dedication of the park.

Richard Sherman is heard performing the original ballad version of "It's a Small World." As we run through a series of home video clips and advertisements from the history of the resort, Sherman brings the tempo up to speed. We arrive in the present day, and Sherman finishes off the piece with a flourish and a smile.

TESTIMONIAL

To demonstrate the new wave of guests, both veterans and newcomers, that our campaign will bring to the parks, we invite you to read this testimonial by @Arthur Wellesley.

It is plain to see that though the history of the Magic Kingdom stretches a half-century into the past, and will hopefully stretch even longer into the future, the "Magic" of its namesake will truly never age.

Thanks for reading,

In Reference to our last minute edit:

We posted sshindel's testimony out of respect and thanks for him taking the time to make it. During our communication to him we failed to take into account the fact that he lives in the Chicagoland Area. As a result when we told him we needed it for 7:00 he gave it to us at 7:00 CT or 8:00 ET rather than 7:00 ET. We forgot to add ET to the date. I ask for the judges not to count his testimony in our final post, but rather see it as our sign of appreciation to him. I apologize for any confusion.

My thoughts...

Team Goofy: Another really solid presentation. First off, the visuals on the website are amazing. I love how there's not an overwhelming amount of detail, but just enough to really convey the message. Having said that, arguably this is the project that has the least amount of physical text description. Will that format help or hurt you? We shall see...

Team Oswald: I really liked the posters and color choices you went with here. Lots of strong concepts. The only problem is I fear you guys have focused too much on your new additions and not enough on "selling" me on those additions. With this being a marketing based project, I fear you might have put your priorities in the wrong place.

Team Mickey: I thought this had a really good flow to it. Absolute winner in terms of design on the posters and how they flowed through the post. It might not have been a site, but it was sure as heck visually pleasing to look at. Probably my favorite commercial of the bunch as well. Great job of spreading your efforts across a lot of different avenues. Will your project end up as the "Mario" and be the one with the best overall stats. :p ;)

Team Donald: Really good effort. Hands down my favorite visuals in a project that was filled with strong visuals. AWESOME motif going on there. Very well thought out commercial as well. That being said, I simply don't see a lot here that really "sells" me on much of anything more than nostalgia. The stuff you have is nice...just a bit minimal...which judging by the posters might be exactly what you were going for. We'll see if it pays off!

The Tenth Amendment -
The Golden Buzzer is a new device in the game that is held by each judge. When a judge comes across a winning, first-place proposal he or she likes a lot and thinks it is one of the best yet, they can utilize their Golden Buzzer on that team. This device grants the entire team immunity from the next challenge of the competition (and thus releases them from the rankings of the current challenge). The project manager of the second place team crowned after the use of a Golden Buzzer does not receive the Immunity Idol. Each judge only has one Golden Buzzer. During the following challenge, in which the entire team has immunity, normal immunity rules must be followed. Each competitor must post once for each day of the duration of the challenge, and a complete post must be submitted. If these rules are broken, the whole team or the individual offenders will immediately enter the Board Room instead. Golden Buzzers cannot be used once all teams have been merged down to just two teams.

Challenge 2 - Critiques

Team Mickey - Project Manager @Zweiland, @Bucfan87, @RMichael21, and @JokersWild

Your celebration logo is definitely vouching for my top spot, primarily because of the font used, the inclusion of the slogan (which is very clever, unique from usual "magic" gimmicks, and focuses on nostalgia...end sidebar), and the fact that you went BIG. The theme really is a true one that the magic has always been there and will always be. Your merchandise offerings and new attractions would be in high demand and are perfect for the parks and the resort clientele of the 21st century. Your posters and banner ads...wow...I'll admit I'd probably buy the whole set. They are extremely well designed. Your commercial as well, it's really great. The music, the narration, the clips. It was put together in pristine fashion. I actually didn't know who your testimonial giver was earlier this week, but he is a well-known member and he wrote testimony that fits write in and perfectly describes similar feelings that I felt viewing your proposal. Tremendous job Team Mickey! I'm using my GOLDEN BUZZER on you guys for your heartwarming presentation!

Team Goofy - Project Manager @MonorailRed, @Matt7187, @Flippin'Flounder, and @spacemt354

Like the logo this challenge, very fitting for Goofy. The celebration logo came out very nice and attractive, though a little messy around the edges. The testimonial from a prominent member like that is very good, and he had nothing but good things to say about your campaign. This shows how well your campaign would stand in the public eye. As far as the site goes, I'm not sure it's necessary. Plus, the background seemed glitchy to me...not sure whose end that is on. The commercials did a good job of editing the video clips together with the fitting music, but overall, from some clunky transitions to the generic, overly-centric font, it seemed very unprofessional. You did well with what you had though, and I give you credit for that. The posters are the same feeling for me. They all feel either pretty generic or recycled, except for the final one featuring the family on opening day, the 25th anniversary, and during your celebration. That was what you should have continued the theme with on the others, bringing it all together. The updates and promotions were nice. I'm searching for a slogan and I assume it's "Golden Dreams [Celebration]"...? Anyways, good job overall, there were just several major weak spots.

Team Donald - Project Manager @englanddg, @IDInstitute, and @DSquared

Awesome video logo! Perfect for Donald! First, if they continue to follow precedent, there won't be a D23 Expo in 2020. They are every two years, so mark your calendar for August 2021. Your logo is similar in idea to o few others, but different and simple...I like it. The slogan is a little plain..."50 Years of Memories" is good, but the posters' "50 Years of...___" seems kind of easy to come up with. That said, the poster looked good with the Mary Blair and then artful styles. Some supports under Spaceship Earth would help though. The new offerings you describe seem like great opportunities to lure in the guests for the celebration. (BTW, can I get a ticket book?...lol) The commercial was good, was pretty good, though the first half seemed like just a rip of the grand opening with the main entrance background loop (yeah, I know it!), and the second half was kind of choppy and a tad unprofessional-looking. Your testimonial is from a well-known, respected member, but it doesn't seem too supportive of your concept, but he did want to sign up, so it passes! Overall, good job this week.

Team Oswald - Project Manager @Voxel, Interim Project Manager @Sam4D23, and @tcool

The logo for your celebration is simple and great. Similar in core concept to Team Goofy's, yours takes a unique turn with the futuristic font and I like it. Now we have the slogan...I like where you tried to go with family, but the "Celebrate...___" gimmick is so generic and cliche. It's been used and done to death. I like the ideas you ran with with the poster, leaving three to match in a smaller size, and taking it all the way to the bank with MK, the true birthday girl herself. However, the posters seem very cluttered and it is really hard to make out the text. In this case, less is more. All of the offerings and additions sound semi-realistic. Your testimonial is from a very well-respected member, and it shows how your campaign would stand among longtime fans and passers-by alike. Your video was edited phenomenally. Well done on that front, though I might have used a different transition for the text. Overall, great job. (And respect to @sshindel !)

The Epcot Manifesto
In Reference to our last minute edit:

We posted sshindel's testimony out of respect and thanks for him taking the time to make it. During our communication to him we failed to take into account the fact that he lives in the Chicagoland Area. As a result when we told him we needed it for 7:00 he gave it to us at 7:00 CT or 8:00 ET rather than 7:00 ET. We forgot to add ET to the date. I ask for the judges not to count his testimony in our final post, but rather see it as our sign of appreciation to him. I apologize for any confusion.
I'm sorry that I didn't get it in sooner, and I'm sorry to those others who asked for testimonials and I didn't get to do them. I got slammed at work today and really didn't have a chance to dig into them in time!
