The winning tribe is Sklaronah.

The losing tribe is Baxtanu.

Overall, (despite their wonderful concept) Baxtanu's inferior presentation and lack of a "perfect" location is what caused them to lose this round.

Now, in your voting booth PM, members of the Baxtanu Tribe must each vote for who they would like to vote out. Since there is double elimination, the two castaways with the most points will be eliminated. You must respond by 8:00 PM EST on January 28, 2015.
Do we get to vote for two people?

Up: Adventure Book Journey is a celebration of exploration and adventure in the wild as seen through the imagination of a child. A tribute to discovery and wonder, the ride features a journey through the world of Tepui and the world famous Pleasure Falls through the idealistic view of a young Carl and Ellie.

Timeline

The ride takes place during the unknown era of Carl and Ellie's youth (presumably 1930's United States), and pays tribute to their childhood hero, Charles F. Muntz, through their idealistic view.

tumblr_meoryg3ayG1riwl6fo1_500.jpg

Location and Ride Map

The ride will be located on Discovery Island, as the ride theme itself is a celebration of discovery, and will be physically located just south of Pizzafari.

map.jpg

Ride Vehicles and Specifications

The ride system is similar in design to the Peter Pan ride in Fantasyland, with a ride vehicle as a cardboard box tied to balloons, and suspended from an overhead track.

ridesystem.jpg

This ride system allows for grand vistas and offers a unique twist on a standard dark ride boat or flat omnimover style.

The ride specifications are as follows:

Maximum suspended height: 20 ft
Ride Length: 3 minutes
CPV (Capacity Per Vehicle): avg 4, max 6 (4 adults 2 children)
THRC (Theoretical Hourly Ride Capacity): 1200
OHRC (Operational Hourly Ride Capacity): 1000
ODRC (Operational Daily Ride Capacity, 14 hours): 14,000

Interactive Queue

The queue starts from a wilderness path.

entrance.jpg

In the queue you can experience interactive adventures that allow you to explore the camp. Children will have alternate paths that lead to small play areas and tunnels, and there will be interactive animal exhibits through the path as well that focus on South American animals.

As you make your way through the woods, the path slowly begins to take on a less green and colorful look, and more one of sepia and brown tones.

You enter the attic of the dilapidated house where Carl and Ellie first meet for the secondary queue, and the walls are plastered with posters and news articles about world exploration. Including the adventures of one Charles Muntz!

tumblr_l194ov27ha1qzlu28o1_500.png

Ride-through Experience

Scene 1: Planning the Adventure!
After boarding your cardboard "airplane", you turn a sharp corner and quickly elevate over a room. Here, under a blanket with a flashlight, you can spy a young Carl and Ellie as they look through Ellie's Adventure Book and plan their future explorations!

Design Note: This room is done in browns and dark, but comfortable, tones to give the impression of a vague memory.

Scene 2: A Childhood Hero!
You turn another corner and fly through a transition room where Charles Muntz posters and news articles line the wall, and video newsreels of his escapades are playing.

Transition.jpg

Design Note: This is a rather short scene, but serves as the transition from the "real world" to the one of Carl and Ellie's Imagination, and therefore serves as a color palette change from brownish sepia to color

Scene 3: Welcome to Paradise Falls
This is an elaborate "fly over" scene of Paradise Falls, the jungles and of course the grand vista of the Falls themselves!

Flyover.jpg

Design Note: This scene is similar to the London scene in Peter Pan and is included to offer guests a sweeping and beautiful view of the world they are about to explore. This is in contrast to the effect that was intended with Peter Pan where one is trying to simulate flying away from London. Rather, this is welcoming, and a grand daytime vista.

Scene 5: The Spirit of Adventure
Again you turn another corner and fly over a rock maze below them, and you begin to approach a large dirigible. This is the famed "Spirit of Adventure", the aircraft home of Charles Muntz himself!

airship.jpg

Design Note: This model will be highly detailed and include working propellers and directional fins, and a floating movement simulated by hidden wires which allow the model to "float" around the scene, emphasizing movement.

Scene 6: Meeting Muntz
You enter another room that is the interior of the airship, in the Dining Area. Here, Charles Muntz is training his puppies, including a very young Dug. A Rottweiler, English Bulldog and a young Doberman are jumping on his legs, excited for a treat.

The puppies do not have their voice boxes yet, but Muntz clearly loves his young companions. As you watch, he is teaching them how to track down the mysterious creatures in Pleasure Falls.

tumblr_lpfwzzxOPt1qztwte.gif

However, not all the puppies seem interested in these lessons, as you spy a young orange dog named Dug off from the pack looking out the window of the airship and wagging his tail excitedly.

Scene 7: Toucan, Muntz Can't
The next scene has Muntz standing on the edge of a cliff overlooking a grand vista of Pleasure Falls. He is searching for a colorful and rare bird, the Tiki-Tooki, who resembles a Toucan.

Unbeknownst to Muntz, he's found the bird, who is perched on Muntz's Safari hat. The puppies have surrounded Muntz in a circle, and are barking and jumping on his legs excitedly. All except puppy Dug who is off in a corner smelling a flower.

Muntz, who is looking through spyglasses is mumbling distractedly for the dogs to settle down, and that he's working on looking for the Tiki-Tooki bird.

Scene 8: Llama Gonna Give You Up!
You pass through a sweeping curved scene where Muntz is valiantly climbing up a steep cliff. The puppies dangle a few feet below him in a rope sack attached to Muntz's belt.

Muntz is mumbling that he's looking for the Llamtar, a creature which resembles a llama but has a colorful mane. Of course, as you turn the corner, you see that the Llamatar is perched a few feet away, just off to the left but around the corner and out of Muntz's view.

llama-blue-600.png
Muntz is climbing right past him! And, he doesn't realize it...but you, the rider, do!

Scene 9: Glory Bound
Muntz is striking a heroic pose at the top of a small jungle waterfall, and calling out to his puppies to find them. They are there, under the backside of the waterfall, and wrapped up by a large colorful snake. Well, all except Dug who, as you turn another corner you discover, has found a squirrel.

Design Note: This will be done in a very cartoon way, and the puppies are obviously being "held" by the snake, nothing more.

Scene 10: The Mysterious Creature!
Muntz finally encountering Kevin in the rock labyrinth. Kevin is around the corner, and is casting a scary looking 12 foot shadow on the wall. Muntz is excited, and bravely is creeping forward as his dogs cower behind him.

Scene 11: What were you afraid of?
You pass around a rock outcropping to see what is around the bend. Muntz hasn't made it this far, and it's your chance to warn Kevin to run! You can hear Muntz in the background lost in the maze of rocks with his faithful canine companions.

up%20kevin.jpg

Scene 11: Back to Reality
A small transitional room has pictures of the drawings that young Carl and Ellie have made of their imagined explorations with their childhood hero.

Design Note: This scene will resemble the drawings and clippings found in the Adventure Book pages in the movie.

Scene 12: The End
Finally, you arrive in the unloading zone, which is themed like Carl and Ellie's adult living room, to include pictures of them in various situations mounted on the wall, their comfortable armchairs and the amazing painting above the mantel.
4a9fa9cef606902fb6cb309fb0308aa8.jpg
Design Note: Here there will be no animatronics or anything, just a bittersweet and subtle nod to the rest of the film.

Wilderness Explorer's Warehouse

The final queue exits into a gift shop that is themed like a kids clubhouse. Here Guests can purchase a variety of merchandise options such as:
  • Grape Soda Adventure Badges
  • Safari hats and clothes
  • Wilderness explorer sashes for your badges, and other shirts, scarves and merch themed around scouting
  • Authentic hand made South American trinkets
  • Limited Edition Artwork based on the movie
  • "My Adventure Book" Scrapbooking kit and supplies
  • A variety of shirts, stuffed animals and other merchandise
  • Candies and treats based on the movie, including ice cold Grape Soda in glass longneck bottles
merch.jpg

The meet and greet for Russell, Carl and Dug will also be moved to a spot just outside the store exit.

Wilderness Explorer Experience Mini-game

To celebrate the opening of the Up ride, Animal Kingdom will introduce a new, park wide, series of experiences where children and adults alike can earn their Wilderness Explorer badges.

nwhbf8.jpg

Examples include:
  • Earn your Archeology badge by excavating bones in the Boneyard in Dinoland USA
  • Earn your Bravery badge by facing the Yeti on Expedition Everest and drawing a picture about your experience
  • Earn your Puzzle Solving Badge by discovering the meaning of the mysterious statues in Asia, near Yak and Yeti
  • Earn your Environmental Protection badge by participating in special experiences at Rafiki's Planet Watch
In total, 30 mini-experiences will be added with their own unique challenges and associated badges.

Summary

This week, we were able to follow the requirements of making a dark ride akin to one of the classic Fantasyland rides, while adding a modern twist. We created a family friendly and fun dark ride with an interactive queue, though not a themed land.

Therefore, we found it an appropriate home within Animal Kingdom, and believe this ride celebrates imagination, exploration and discovery in the wild...all themes that Animal Kingdom holds dear.

We hope you enjoyed this presentation, and on behalf of the Sklaronah Tribe, we invite you to remember...

Adventure is out there!

EPISODE 3 REWARD CHALLENGE
BAXTANU TRIBE PRESENTS:
16218992088_e3be688842_o.jpg

Here at Team Baxtanu we have had many ideas floating about, but one struck us as just right. This idea is The Conservation Expedition, which takes you through some of Earth's major biomes home to plants and animals important to us. As we venture through the biomes in our Environmental Mover (Omnimover) we will experience the destruction of the biomes and what we are and can do to restore our Earth. Our home and their home. Now without further ado, we give you: the Conservation Expedition in depth.

16381070236_e1587d8950_o.jpg

Facade and Queue
The facade of the ride blends in perfectly with the surrounding jungle area so that you can not tell that there is actually a building there. At the entrance to the ride there is a faded overhead sign that says "Disney's Conservation Expedition" with smaller signs below indicating the Standby and FastPass+. On the right hand side is another battered sign that says Conservation Central over the entrance to the gift shop. Scattered around the area is elements of an expedition such as a tent with supplies, large truck full of boxes and run down Jeep. The queue crosses over the river and off of Discovery Island to access the large ride building.

16404873041_d5c4e413f9_o.jpg

16404872931_4bfb11fb64_o.jpg

Ride vehicles
The ride is a omnimover type ride. Each vehicle is made to look like it is made of wood and have different types of animals carved into them reflecting the appearance of the Tree of Life. Within each car is speakers to provide the narration for the ride. Rafiki speaks the dialogue.

Rafiki's Safety Spiel
Ah, it's me Rafiki. Join me as we venture into the biomes of the world, explore the dangers of pollution, and promote conservation! Wait as the spirit of this planet will lower the safety bar for you and send you on your journey ahead. Keep your body and belongings in the Enviromental Mover at all times! So long friends! See you ahead!

Rainforest
The vehicles round a corner as guests find themselves in the middle of a dense rainforest at the dead of night. Guests slowly move through the humid and wet rainforest, hearing the sounds of some of the rainforest's many animals, and smelling the smell of a distant rainstorm. Bats fly (a projection) way up above the tree line, screeching loudly as they pass. Curious Capuchins look down on the passing guests, quietly howling as they pass.

Rafiki : Welcome my friends to the rainforest. Gaze at its beauty around you as the surroundings amaze you my friends, but never let your guard my friends you never know what may be hiding in the rainforests.

promo-08082012025402-990-width-coopercreek-wilderness3neilhewett.jpg

Gorillas can be heard in the distance, foraging for food. a pair of Toucans and a Parrot sit on a vine directly overhead guests, resting during the long night. Guests round a corner, and enter a cave. Right above the cave, however, sits a Jaguar. As she growls and shows her claws, guests pass under into the cave.

Canyon
Exiting the cave, guests find themselves in the middle of the Grand Canyon. Passing through the vast, desert-like landscape, condors can be heard searching for prey. Off in the distance, a wake of vultures feed on a small animal that has, unfortunately, perished in the heat.

Rafiki : Here we are hidden in the canyons of greatness! A unique habitat for animals and plants alike! Now let us observe!

grandcanyon1.jpg

Finally, the vehicles make their way into the Colorado River, dipping down below the river's surface, and passing some of the river's endangered fish species (projections.)

Coral Reefs
Passing under the surface of the Colorado River, guests are transported into the Great Barrier Reef, just off the coast of Australia. Guests wind and weave through the bright and colorful coral, and anemones, passing some of the reef's inhabitants.

Rafiki (Rafiki sounds like he's in scuba gear slightly muffled) : Ah yes the coral reefs watch as the beauty of the sea surrounds you. Perhaps you may spot a fish or two?

Clownfish bashfully peek out of their anemone homes, staring at passing guests, before returning to their place of safety. Starfish sit motionless, attached to some coral as they await their next meal. a few dolphins even peek out of some of the coral, as does a single moray eel. Quickly, an octopus can be seen before it camouflages itself back into the coral it calls home.

coralreef.jpg

Leaving the coral reef, guests pass by a small group of sea turtles, grazing on the seaweed poking up out of the sand. Guests pass into a cave.

Mountainous Forests
Guests exit the short cave system, finding themselves near the top of a rocky mountain. As birds chirp gleefully high above in the trees, bears can be seen hunting for salmon in a small stream below. A small herd of goats can also be seen resting on some rocks above guests.

mountain%20forest%20wallpaper76508.jpg

Rafiki : Friends : Here the height of our tour shows us the greats trees that grow. The mighty bear hunting, and oh so many more factors for the forest habitat!

Australian Outback
The ride vehicles ascend up a short hill and through a thicket of coniferous trees. What awaits them on the other side is a very different landscape-- that of the Australian Outback. The giant rock Uluru looms as a set piece in the distance, and the sky seems bigger than ever.

dsc_1541-imp.jpg

Rafiki: He he he! Welcome to Australia! Home to kangaroos, saltwater crocodiles, and many more! Now watch how the animals of this biome interact with each other!

As far as the eye can see in front of the vehicle is brown soil, but guests shortly take a turn into an area populated by some plant life. They pass by a troop of kangaroos grazing.

Many other iconic Australian animals, such as koalas, emus, platypus, wallabies, and echidnas, are visible on each side of the trail. Passing over a river, a crocodile snaps dangerously close.

Night is falling, and the vehicles pass through a cave with Aboriginal paintings on the walls that include skulls, handprints, and animal depictions.

GuaTewet_tree_of_life-LHFage.jpg

Arctic Tundra
We emerge into the Arctic Tundra at twilight, a varied landscape. In the distance to the left are coniferous forests blanketing the mountains. On the right is an area of higher elevation covered in ice and snow. In the valley where the ride vehicles are traveling, flowers and other small plants are scattered across the ground.

Rafiki : Friends! The Artic is beautiful, from the animals to the land. Watch as the animals interact, and the land shows us its beauty. Now listen to everything around you!

A musk ox calls across the valley, and more signs of animal life are seen and heard. A group of polar bear cubs are sleeping while their mother looks on. An Arctic fox prowls the mountaintops, and an owl swoops overhead.

The Northern Lights fill the sky and the ride vehicle tilts upward to provide a better view. We enter total darkness.

Arctic%252520Auroras_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg

Pollution and destruction
There is a harsh transition from one of the most beautiful scenes in nature to the terrible reality of many places today. Smog fills the air and trees are seen fallen right and left. An oil refinery, in the distance, is lit in a harsh light.

Rafiki : (coughs) Things here are not good my friends. If we continue the same path we have been heading the biomes will fall countless of species will die. Without the support of the Earth of the trees the Earth and it's inhabitants will disappear-- including you and I.

canadian-refinery.jpg

This is an exaggeration of the harmful things man has done to the environment, but it does represent what could happen if we are not careful.

Rafiki : However things don't have to be like this. Here, come this way...

Spirit of Conservation
As riders enter the new room, the omnimover turns right to face several people planting saplings as well as several saplings already planted. Some of the surrounding bushes and planted saplings already have some visitors! Pay focus to the gentle butterflies fluttering over bushes full of flowers, or perhaps a mole or maybe even a sneaky fox is relaxing under the shade of a bush. In the distance you can see a lush forest as well as tree stumps.

planting.jpg

Rafiki : Here we have a group of indivuals giving back to the forest and animals. Here there are helpful indivuals tree planting at the former site of illegal lumberjacking. There are even creatures lying about looking for shelter, food, or water. It’s important to stop deforestation as trees are important to you, the animals, and the Earth.

Trees provide us with oxygen, and provide animals with food and shelter. Without trees, the food web will be thrown off. We depend on the food web for our food and for our planet.

The vehicles start go up the hill to the next scene as guests ascend they enter a forest has the scent of pine. Once guests get to the top of the ascent they can see they are in a national park. Son the guests turn right to face the next scene. There is a grizzly bear present in a tree, squirrels climbing through the trees, woodpeckers pecking, and deer hiding. Next to what appears to be a bear trap is a park ranger collecting it.

Yosemite_National_Park.jpg

Rafiki : Here we have a national park which is a safe haven for endangered animals such as the Grizzly Bear. Although national parks can help save rare animals there are still poachers who come to kill the animals for their pelts or for other treasures to sell. Although poaching has been made illegal for endangered and rare species poachers continue to do so. Thankfully these national parks do a well job of protecting the animals of the world.

Guests then get to the end of the ride and are unloaded.

Rafiki's Safety Spiel
Thank you my friends for visiting the biomes! Perhaps we can meet again at my Planet Watch, which concerns many of the same themes we saw today. He, he, he!

Conservation Central gift shop
The ride exits into the gift shop Conservation Central. This shop is themed to the Expedition camp and features many different types of wildlife and conservation based gifts. The store will become the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund headquarters in Animal Kingdom. Portions of the proceeds from the every sale at the store will be donated to the Conservation Fund.

You guys both did spectacular, and I'm bad at analogies.

YswCKnY.gif

For formating purposes, I'll keep it simple and give you guys a list.

***

Sklaronah, for Up: Adventure Book Journey:

  • Love the concept and backstory. Up is a movie with such detail and great characters that the timeline and use of young Carl and Ellie works beautifully, seems natural.
  • However, with your plot, there were some holes. I was confused as to how we got into the Spirit of Adventure, and at first, how we went from each location to the next. I also hoped for more elaboration on what Kevin and the Llamator were doing in their respective scenes.
  • The queue seems Disney-quality; no touch screens required! :D Love your use of color to describe the transition.
  • The secondary queue and the second-to-last scene lacks any real purpose, based on how you guys chose to describe it.
  • The exit was beautiful, and with its' killer description, the gift shop was too. It felt very comforting, and capitalized on the theme of your experience.
  • The mini games, while exciting, didn't help or hurt your concept, because it wasn't really part of the ride.
Baxtanu, for Disney Conversation Expedition:

  • The location kind of conflicts with it being Rakifi-hosted, I think. Tell me if I'm making a mistake, I'm not sure of DAK's layout.
  • Your idea fits it best with the overall message of the park.
  • The picture used to describe the queue did, in fact, speak a thousand words. Reminds a lot of Everest's though... :p Wish there was some form of interaction included.
  • I adore your vehicles, but I was left confused with the pictures conflicting what I seeing with your description.
  • Love Rafiki's dialogue, but how do you get from place to place?
  • What techniques were to be used from the backdrops and other animals?
  • I seem a huge similarity between your Forest and National Park scene.
  • Overall, I'm a fan of your message, and how humans can change it: that's the underlying message behind Animal Kingdom.
  • Your gift-shop seems sort of two-dimensional. More writing next time guys!

With all being said above, it's a even tie for me. But we will decide and tell you very soon. Please ask me questions if anyone is confused.
I'm quoting MA's reviews in this thread for posterity.

The winning tribe is Baxtanu

The losing tribe is Sklaronah

It was a VERY, VERY tight race. But overall, Baxtanu had a ride that fit the themes of Animal Kingdom. While Sklaronah's Ride was absolutely outstanding, I feel that Baxtanu's attraction symbolized the messages the park is intended to convey. To be honest, that's really the main reason why Baxtanu won.

Baxtanu wins Reward!
