How Many Licks Does It Take to Get To The Center of a Sundae?

We're here at Walt Disney World! In the next few days, you must create a themed ice-cream or dessert location at one of Walt Disney World's theme parks, water parks or Disney Springs. Be creative! First impressions always count, so do your best too think outside of the box. Also, your dessert location must include a backstory, a menu and a map that shows how your concept fits in with existing areas. The rest it up to you!

11jnl0g.png
This challenge states that both tribes should "think out of the box" when creating the concept. The Baxtanu Tribe not only followed these instructions, but went above and beyond by creating a dessert location that encourages guests to follow the same instructions themselves. So it is very appropriate that we chose Epcot's Imagination Pavilion in Future World for the location of One Little Sweet.

As guests exit the dated and lackluster Journey Into Imagination With Figment, and pass through the desolate ImageWorks, they will notice something...different. The staircase leading up to the pavilion’s long-closed second floor is no longer roped off. Even more promising is the rather large sign that hangs from above the staircase. The sign is rather simple; it just looks like a small cluster of clouds. In front of the clouds, in an elegant purple cursive, are the words “One Little Sweet.” Below the cloud hangs a small silhouetted Dreamcatcher made of metal. A small banner attached to the back of the Dreamcatcher reads “What Dessert Will Spark Your Inspiration?”
e0wo3.png

Guests can take the stairs or the adjacent elevator and finally enter this long-lost area of the Imagination Pavilion once more. The atrium is more or less the same, purplish carpeting completely covers the floor, accented by the natural lighting coming from the building’s gigantic glass pyramids. What is new, however, is the addition of a balcony. On the far side of the atrium, right above the entrance to Captain EO, sits a beautiful balcony, covered in vines, almost as if it just popped up naturally overnight. Guests can come out and enjoy their desserts in this beautiful, secluded area that gives guests a new angle to view Future World.

8004362_orig.png

The main dining room will be functionally similar to most WDW quick-service restaurants, but with the flair of a 50’s diner. Purple and orange tiles, a nod to Head Chef Figment, will line the floor while large windows will afford views of Future World and World Showcase. Tables will be covered in linoleum while chairs will be metal with vinyl cushions. On each wall, long bars with bolted-down stools will allow guests a truly 50’s inspired way to enjoy their treats.

The showpiece of One Little Sweet is the massive, audio-animatronic Figment which sits center stage within the design studio. Clad in attire similar to that of the cast members working within the space, Head Chef Figment will serve as part-barker, part-cheerleader for the guests as they create their deserts. The AA, similar in size to the Mr. Potato Head AA found in Toy Story Mania, moves, glides, and sings his way across a raised platform around which the desert creation takes place. By using breakthrough, never-before-used technology, Figment will appear to skate across the stage on the roller skates reminiscent of 50’s-era drive-ins.

But perhaps the most amazing feature of this AA will be the way in which in interacts with guests. Those who elect to create their own concoctions at the Desertworks will be asked to check-in to their kiosks using their MagicBands. Once guests check-in, the computer software which drives the Figment AA would have access to the first names of all guests in a given party. The system would then randomly select one name to call out, interacting with that guest in a one-on-one, personal manner, asking questions such as what they ordered, who their favorite character is, and what rides they had ridden that day.

Dessert Bar
Towards the back of the dining room, guests will find a smallish bar. The bar seems to be out of a 50s diner, with wood paneling, a meticulously clean white top, and even chrome accents. Directly behind the bar is a small window that looks into a few silhouetted cogs and other various machine parts, back dropped by a dim purplish light. Cast members, decked out in full 50s waiter garb, can make and serve any dessert item wanted, from specialty sundaes to classic pastry desserts. These desserts are listed on the menu.

Rainbow Tunnel
3426143454_5afebc8bf5_z.jpg

In homage to the previous use of the space, the rainbow tunnel will be returning to One Little Sweet, but with a completely new purpose. Now, instead of simply being a path of bright lights and flashy colors, the iconic rainbow tunnel will be home to One Little Sweet’s frozen yogurt machines. Guests can travel down the tunnel, bowl in hand, and choose from dozens of flavors of frozen yogurt, with each flavor being found within its color arch. For example, cherry and strawberry will be found in the red arch space while blueberry will be found in the blue arch. Toppings will be found at the end of the tunnel, but outside of the tunnel itself.

The DessertWorks
4321778_orig.png

Probably the most interesting part of “One Little Sweet” is the “DessertWorks.” Guests entering the Dessertworks will find themselves in a room just full of tubes, pipes, cogs, and vats. Towards the back of the room sits three pneumo tube-looking devices jutting from the floor. In the center of the room sit three rather strange contraptions. They looks like control panels with touch screens on them. Guests can approach one and choose how exactly they’d like to make their own ice cream sundae. The DessertWorks has a plethora of toppings, from simple things like hot fudge, and sprinkles, to more unique items such as various candies, and baked goods. After choosing what they would like, guests can wait towards the back of the room by the pneumo tubes.

With that, this fantastic machine comes to life. First, a bowl is lowered onto a conveyor belt just above guests heads. The various tubes and pipes begin to light up as guests can see the silhouettes of various items travelling through the machine. As the bowl travels down the conveyor belt, Rube Goldberg-type devices start putting the toppings in. Oreos fall down a Plinko -type machine into the ice cream bowl, Hot Fudge streams out of a small fountain; strange, whimsical devices are making guests’ sundaes right before their eyes. Finally, the sundae disappears from the conveyor belt and pops up through the pneumo tube with a puff of smoke. The whole show takes about 30 seconds.
In terms of logistics, obviously, the sundae isn’t made on stage using this device. They’re made just behind in the kitchen, and place in the pneumo tube, ready to be served just as it’s finished being “made” by the DessertWorks.

Pinstripe Parlour

It was in the 1920's during baseball's prime, a father and son first opened up their little baseball-based dessert and snack restaurant. They never were very famous, but they had some delicious homemade desserts that the few people who knew about them raved about. But the son grew up and pursued his dream of being a baseball player. He was the star player on his first baseball team, the Mudville Caseys, and made it into the MLB. He was a great player, but felt bad for leaving his dad who was going out of business. One day, in an interview, the son talked about what he did to get there, and he started with the dessert parlour. And then, to the son's surprise, when he came home it turned out that the interview made the little restaurant extremely popular!
To this day, the ownership of the parlour has been passed down generation to generation, and the Americana-baseball deserts are now world-renowned. However, they still keep the place simple and pride themselves on how they got there with the American Dream and the love of American Baseball.

2wgxdnb.png

Pinstripe Parlour has two locations; One in Epcot, as well as one in Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Epcot Version:
Slide1_zps31e5c37e.jpg

Standing three stories tall and towering proudly over the "American Adventure" pavilion, the exterior to Epcot's "Pinstripe Palace" is themed after the most American of traditions...the grand ritual of going to a baseball game.

The "stadium" style venue is actually a forced perspective version of a ball park which combines iconic elements from such famed stadiums such as Wrigley's Field and Yankee Stadium into one impressive piece of architechture.

Hanging proudly over the entrance is the "Pristine Parlor" sign, along with two baseball bats crossing each other. Guests can either choose to dine at "The Dugout" or "The Bleachers". The Dugout offers weather-controlled seating while The Bleachers afford guests views of the ball park, where occasional baseball games can be watched. Throughout the building, the sounds of the resident ball park organ can be heard pumping out classic tunes such as "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", "Baby Elephant Walk", and "The Star Spangled Banner".

Disney's Hollywood Studios Version:
Slide2_zpsaf63592a.jpg

Another Pinstripe Parlour can be found in Streets of America, in Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park. Before you even enter, you are immersed in the Hollywood-facade theming of a New York street. Continuing down the road, on the intersection of two different routes lies Pinstripe Parlour. An older, wooden building on the bottom level of the street sits there, with its historical age showing, but also its character.

308kv81.png

Streets of America Location Exterior Art

No matter the location, you step into the doors, and you're filled with a sense of Americana as you are transported into the world of baseball. On your left, you see a bar, where there are two tenders, dressed in their finest baseball uniforms. Behind the counter, you have pictures, baseballs, and bats hanging from the wall and on shelfs, autographed by some of baseball's finest, such as Babe Ruth and Joltin' Joe DiMaggio. To the right, you have an organ placed in the corner, with someone playing iconic tunes such as "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". There is seating on the right near the organ, while there is additional seating in another room in the rear. In that room, more memorabilia is hanging, and there is a section dedicated for some "Baffle Ball" machines, the original Pinball (was created in 1931) but with baseball bats instead of flippers. Meandering around in the seating areas are "barkers" of sorts, who ask you trivia about baseball, and if you get a question right, you get some peanuts, popcorn, or Cracker Jack!

Baxtanu:

@Zweiland, @JokersWild, @Aaron O, @LittleGiants16, @Vipraa, @tcool and @Sam4D23

I really enjoyed this concept! I found it really fun and exciting to read as well. When I first read that you would be using Imagination, I thought to myself... "There's a lot you can do with that. It's either going to be really good or not so good." Let's see how you guys did:

- I LOVED the logo, really great! I love the Figment colors and the Figment in the costume
- I notice how you said this:
The Baxtanu Tribe not only followed these instructions, but went above and beyond by creating a dessert location that encourages guests to follow the same instructions themselves.
However, it seems you forgot to include a backstory, which was part of the instructions:
Also, your dessert location must include a backstory, a menu and a map that shows how your concept fits in with existing areas.
- I really like the name, it's rather catchy and is very memorable
- I also liked the wording in the first few paragraphs, it really set the stage for the concept
- You mention the sign after the staircase... If it's inside, how will a simple sign draw the attention of guests from outside?
- The map is nice, but I feel the balcony isn't a main feature like it should be and it seems awkward for guests to have to cross the atrium to access it.
- I'm not sure a lush balcony fits in so well with a rather modern-ish glass pyramid
- I like the 50's vibe, really nice!
- The AA sounds really neat, however:
- A giant Figment doesn't sound "cute" Figment is supposed to be relatable/lovable and I feel that a giant version of him might take that away
- Also, I'm worried that a random selector might cause feelings to get hurt. For example: "Mommy, why did the dragon call out Tommy's name and not mine?!?!"
-You should have gone into more depth on the technology of Figment actually asking questions and talking
with guests. I mean, asking guests what rides they rode? How would they do that with pin-point accuracy, every time?
- How would Figment sound like Figment? How would the voice work?
- How is wood paneling diner-like?
- I LOVE the idea of using the Rainbow Tunnel as a Frozen-Yogurt machine, super creative!
- The menu was hard to read, being as there were no spaces between lines and not many pictures to break it up
- To be honest, the menu was pretty generic, nothing really unique
- Bacon-Infused Ice-Cream?! That's either a really good idea or a really gross idea!
- The Fro-Yo flavors sound great, really unique
-The different rice krispie treats sound great as well!
- I loved the DessertWorks! Probably the best part of the whole concept, nothing bad about it!
- I also liked the idea of Figment's Sundaes, but it seems pretty similar to the DessertWorks and the normal ice cream "bar"

- I feel that there's too many places to get a dessert: DessertWorks, The Rainbow Tunnel and the actual counter?!? That's a lot of lines!

In sum, Baxtanu did a spectacular job on this hard, but somewhat obvious concept. But their mistake of not including a backstory, as well as ideas that weren't thought through all the way, made their location a bit less then desirable.

This concept was really unique. I don't think anything like this has ever even been discussed before. You took a huge risk... Let's see how it played out.

- I'm not sure how I feel about the name, it seems like a name that would easily be forgotten
- To be honest, there's a flaw in the backstory. Are you sure 1 interview from this MLB player (which I'm sure isn't an all-star because he had started to pursue his dream rather late) could make the ice cream parlor that much more famous? Especially in the 1930's when there wasn't internet and new traveled slowly
- Also, I wish you had added a few sentences about the relationship between the father and the son, making the backstory more relatable
- Other then that, I LOVED the backstory, it really hits a home run!
- I wish the font on the logo stood out a bit more, it fades a little to much into the backround
- I like the subtle reference to the backstory of Casey's Corner, well done!
- I'm not sure about 2 locations. I feel you may have stretched the rules too much by finding this loophole. Also, by having 2 locations, you could easily confuse guests who aren't very knowledgeable about WDW by having to ask the question, "Which one, the SOA Location or the Epcot Locations?"
- The location in The American Adventure is off to the side... With it being 3 stories tall, it could draw attention away from the wonderful, spectacular attraction right next door
- To be honest, I came off kind of confused with the whole forced perspective thing
- Alright, now that I reread the forced perspective part a few times, I'm actually really liking it a lot!
- I like how you included bleachers, now that the ones at Casey's Corner are gone
- I really feel that the SOA location is a bit forced
- Also, the theming is a little bit "off." Why would the Father and Son start a ice cream parlor on a "Hollywood facade theming of a New York Street?"
- I like the theming of the SOA version A LOT more, I wish you had including something similar for AA, but I like how you kept each one unique
- I love the theming behind the bar, a nice detail!
- I Really enjoyed the idea of an organ as well, a very nice detail
-However, are these different theming elements for the SOA location, the World Showcase Version or both? That made me pretty confused
- In my opinion, a barker calling put trivia could either be really fun or really annoying, depending on what kind of person you are
- The prices on the menu photo are a little "off" but not by too much that it's a severe problem
- I LOVED the in depth look at the menu: @englanddg, I'm looking at you!
- No compliants about the menu, well done, everything seems delicious!
- I liked how you included the Arriba Clemente Creamsicle Milkshake, a nice break from chocolate
- The ending was a little... odd. That picture made it kind of hard to take the concept seriously ;):p
- The video, while very funny, was kind of repetitive after a while
- Also, the accent was a little weird. It's like you were trying to do a Boston accent, with southern and Canadian influences. ;):p:D I thought it made the video more entertaining though!
- I would have given you guys an automatic win if you have named the guy Rob the Bostonian. That would have been a great Survivor reference! ;)

Overall, you guys created an amazing, unique ice cream/dessert parlor (or parlors ;)) and I thought you executed your idea extremely well! But, I feel that your locations are more of a place to stop as you pass by, then a place where you go out of your way to visit. Finally, I feel that, while the references were nice, your location was a little bit too "Casey's Corner."

Results will come within the next 30 minutes with the next immunity challenge either late tonight or tomorrow.

Episode 1 Reward Challenge Results

The winning tribe is:
Sklaronah

The losing tribe is:
Baxtanu

While Sklaronah's proposal did have a few flaws, it was Baxtanu's lack of a backstory and "bland" menu that caused them to lose this reward challenge. Sklaronah's
extremely unique concept was what won them this reward challenge.

This is not an immunity challenge, so no one will be voted out. Sklaronah will
receive an advantage in the next immunity challenge.

Welcome to your first immunity challenge! Once again, immunity is back up for grabs! The losing tribe of this challenge will have to go to Imagineer's Council and vote out a member of their tribe.

For this challenge, we'll be traveling around the world at Epcot! Your job is to create a new attraction in Mexico, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, France or Canada in World Showcase. However, here's the catch. Your attraction must be centered around water. This means that water must be the main component of the attraction. In addition, you may use expansion plots near or next to the country you use. The rest is up to you!

Your concept must be turned in by Sunday, January 18 at 8:00 PM EST. Also, for this challenge, you must use a website, but you may use the forum as a segue between us and your concept.

Sklaronah, now for your advantage. You must choose which country, from the list above, that Baxtanu must use for their concept. Please respond ASAP.
