Tha's gross! I lived in Florida for a year when I was in the Navy, and I chased one of those things around my condo for a hour. It climbed underneath my alarm clock, and I smashed my clock with a mallet and killed it. I was afraid to lift up the clock because it tried to fly at my head once.

You just made me flashback to the movie "Bubba Ho-Tep."

Ah, yes another advantage to living in Florida [I just moved from Tampa.] I had a similar freak out once when we stayed at the All Star Music, we were walking to our hotel room and it was like the frog plague they were everywhere, and it doesn't help that I have (had) a major phobia about frogs.
Ahh frogs!! :hurl:

My biggest phobia. I hate even thinking of it. At AS Music or Sports, I also came across frogs, but they are nothing to the ones we have here on a regular basis. Right behind our fence is a canal, so we get the big nasty toads, big iguanas, rats, and your occasional small snakes. I'll take the last two over frogs and iguanas any day :hurl:

Its basically the darkness. Once they bring up the house lights on Fantasmic, they all scatter. Florida is pretty much tropical, so these things are to be expected. They won't hurt you, they are just gross, thats all.

We only encountered them at the pool at ASMovies, Or should I say...IN the pool. The kids were quite freaked out! Took a lot of prodding to get them to get back in the pool. Saw a few smaller ones just out and about at Universal Studios, but I didn't see them at the parks. This was in June.

Palmettos: correct me if im wrong, but what I know of them is this:

They got their name from the Palmetto Palms (native to the south, and I believe the Palmetto Palm is the state tree of South Carolina as seen on its license plate) where you can find hundreds of Palmetto bugs inside the
scale-like bark.

Disney does a good job of controlling all pests, and once you step off property you can easily encounter Palmettos. Cockroaches hang around urban human areas (trash and such) wheras Palmettos stay in more natural areas.

I have seen Palmettos in Disney around such natural (created) areas.
I have heard of Plamettos inside of Disney strollers (before they are cleaned in the morning)

Yes, living in Florida is VERY interesting with all the bugs.

Speaking of palmettos, my mom just killed one in our family room yesterday. :hurl:

And yes, I have seen my share all around WDW... Even more :hurl: ing

Thanks for the heads up on the giant bugs! It's good to know this kind of stuff before I go...that way I won't scream as loud as I would have if it was a total surprise.

I was working queue control at Back to the Future (the place in the queue line where they send you to the different levels) one morning and I spotted one on the wall next to me! I chased it around with a broom. Thank God there weren't any guests yet. What a sight!

EWWWWW!!! :hurl:

I have a HUGE phobia of all bugs, big and small. Plus, I'm a raging germaphobe. I am NEVER going to see Fantasmic again!

::shudders and slaps leg when he feels the tiniest tickling sensation:

Great, now I can't sleep tonight. :p

Just wondering.... is there any seasonality to the Palmetto Bugs? I usually visit WDW in January and I don't remember seeing any overly disgusting enormous airborne roaches, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

Gross story: there are fairly big bugs in the summer in the midwest too... I am a swimmer, and once, at an early early morning swim practice in SE Michigan, I accidentally ate a giant live beetle in one big gulp of air (I was doing the breaststroke and moving pretty fast, couldn't really check in front of me for floating bugs). It was disgusting. I get the creeps just re-living it as I type this. Bleah!

This is the part where I confess to you all that I went to Palmetto High School. And no, I'm not kidding.
