I could tell many hillarious stories about chasing lizards in my apartment in St. Pete...being from Kentucky I was totally freaked out when they came into my apartment. My neighbors always joked so much about it!

What part of Kentucky are you from? I'm from Louisville! The lizard didn't bother me too much, I just wanted to try to get him out of my apartment. The tail thing just sorta freaked me out because I'd never seen one actually lose its tail, let alone been the one to cause it to fall off. I'm sure the tail probably grew back and he lived happily ever after.

Bugs don't really bother me too much, I just don't like them touching or crawling on me. When I used to go to summer camp (near Owensboro, KY) I used to clean the bugs out of the tents because all the other girls were scared of them. I don't think I'm quite as brave as I was in my younger days because now I'm more likely to make someone else get the bugs. The scariest bug I ever saw was on the door to the restroom at camp. It was huge and looked like it had pinchers. That was one that I was not touching! It was funny because everyone had to ______ and no one was brave enough to go in.

Lexington. The lizzards in the apartment were crazy, one lady I worked with told me to spray them with hairspray, something about the stickyness causes them to like freeze and you can take them outside without really hurting them? Didn't really work just made me look like an idiot chasing after a 2 inch lizard with a can of Aqua net.

I have a story concerning the frogs at the All Star hotels. I wasn't there. I was partying at PI. :p Anyway, I had gone to WDW with my mom and my sister and her kids. While they were returning from the parks, there was a frog right by the door to our room. My mom is terrified of frogs (and so am I) and didn't know what to do. She found a CM who was able to help her get rid of the frog. Dumb frogs. They're evil!

Please be nice to the lizards. They eat the bugs.

For those who asked, there are generally more bugs of every kind in the summer than in the winter. And yes, you can pay an exterminator to keep them out, for the most part.

And don't forget the subterranean termites.

Or the brown recluse spiders.

Palmetto Bugs are pretty creepy. At least they aren't rats though.

Sevral months ago my family was dining at Pizza Planet on the second floor
when all of the sudden a RAT runs up the pipe located within' 10 feet of our table. Needless to say, we all lost our appetites.

I was at the arcade in the contemporary, when i saw two rats feasting on a piece of half eaten pizza. I must say it was very nasty. Whats the story with the Vultures on the top of the contemporary?

Men in Black was on one of the pay channels last night . . . BUGS! Then, this thread pops up. hee hee.

palmetto bugs, regular roaches, lizards, frogs, rats - welcome to Florida. Did you happen to notice while riding that monorail in from the parking lot that the park is built in a marsh? Guess what live in marshes? Okay, besides timeshare owners!

*feeling woozy after reading posts*

I am so glad that in all the many visits that we have made to WDW, we have not run into any palmetto bugs or other roaches . . . * pauses to regain composure :hurl: *

I am curious though, since it is just early May and not the heat of summer, are they especially bad in the spring? From what I've read, they remind me 'somewhat' of locust . . . glad those buggers only come around every 7 (?) years . . . and not in my region! Anyway, I guess that the 47 degree weather that I'm experiencing right now has some advantages!

we have an exterminator once a month, and usually the only time we see them is when they're dead. usually. I'll take them over scorpions.

Just wondering.... is there any seasonality to the Palmetto Bugs? I usually visit WDW in January and I don't remember seeing any overly disgusting enormous airborne roaches, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention.
In Florida they are only around during the summer, winter, fall and spring.

Honestly, as much as we were freaked out by huge roaches, I think we only saw 2 of them while at All Star Movies. We didn't see any in the parks at Disney, even Blizzard Beach. The only other place we saw them was at Universal Studios. This was in June.

When we visited in May, I don't recall seeing any of them.

Although on our May visit, during our visit to the beach (Canaveral National Seashore) we experienced what I swear were "killer bees" or at least a varient of those. The bees were so aggressive, they ended up scaring us away. This particular beach is a wildlife refuge though so we saw LOTS of different bugs.

Oh wow...I remember Palmetto Bugs.

I lived in Orlando from age 2-12 (before my parents decided to ruin my life and move away 2 years before Disney was finishes....I'll never forgive them).

We lived by a swamp...so those suckers were abundant. One night...while I was sleeping...I was awaken by something crawling up my chest and into my mouth. I quickly swatted it away and jumped out of bed.

I turned on the light and there was five Palmetto Bugs crawling on the wall by my bed.

They're dead now...

The bugs in Florida continue to make me re-think wanting to move to Florida some day.

I think I'm content here in Rhode Island. I'll just make frequent trips to WDW. In the cooler months of course lol.

Years ago when my family and I stayed at one of the All Stars I saw a roach run accross the bathroom floor and into my sweatpants that I was about to put on. That grossed me out. Good thing we were checking out that day or I wouldn't have slept the rest of our stay.

I really shouldn't have read this just before going to bed. :dazzle:

they try to come inside during the 'winter' months here. the rest of the year they're out killing birds and attacking tourists. If you guys really want to get freaked out, strap on a mask and a tank and let's go out into the gulf. :) there's more than dolphins out there.

There is one good insecticide (roach bait) that will take care of any roach problem. Fipronil will kill any and all roaches. It is available in any Kmart, Wal-Mart, etc. It is sold under the brand name of Combat. It will not work over night because it is a bait. However, once you put out the bait stations, your roaches will be history within a month. As long as you replace the bait traps every 3 months, you will never see a roach again. There is no need for an extermination service to get rid of roaches.
