Oh, and as always (and as I am sure it was), Jesus is soooo handsome! Jim Caviezel (sp?) has that image I´ve always had of the most handsome man on earth: Jesus! :D

No Maria, the film title is The Passion of the Christ

Really??
Then I don´t like the title in English.... in Spanish it is simply The Passion or The Passion of Christ.

ha ha, Maria, the Bible describes Jesus as a rather ordinary man. :animwink:

I would settle for any 'ordinary man' like Him!

(is it ok if I use this smiley? :slurp: )

It's going to be graphic, it's going to be gruesome. Crucifixion is not a pretty sight and Jesus was beaten severly before he was ever crucified. I think people need to see this to see what possibly could have happened to Him physically.

I'm going.

You couldn´t have said it better! I hope to see full theaters here.

I am most definitely going to see this. I know it is going to be graphic. I know that it is going to be bloody. And, I know that I am most probably going to cry my eyes out. I am proudly Catholic, and I think it's about darn time that somebody out there had the guts to make this movie, tell this story in a major motion picture form.

Unfortunately, I think the movie is completely sold out here for the first two weeks, so I don't know when I'll actually get to see it. I live in the Baptist Bible Belt, and several of the Baptist churches in the area bought up huge blocks of the showtimes at our theater. They're even encouraging their members to go see an R-rated movie.

Did anyone else watch the special interview with Mel Gibson on PrimeTime?

It's Aramaic, Hebrew and a little Latin with subtitles. And Dave, since when is it wrong to talk about Christ if talking about everything else is permissable? It doesn't have to cause trouble unless someone instigates it. I'ma go see it hopefully the weekend when it comes out.

Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin??

OH MAN I AM SO THERE!

I have high hopes for this movie.

Can't wait :)

When I was a kid, my favorite thing about church (I was raised Catholic) was the passion. I remember how deeply moved I was every time I attended the stations of the cross-- it was during these times at church that I actually felt connected -- the humanity aspect of Christ -- rather than just some glowing kind of magic guy, you know?

As an adult, I don't feel connected to any organized church, but and I am sure it is because of the passion and it prompting me to study more about the life and teachings of Jesus, I do still very connected to Christ.

Heading for the great escape.
Delighted to see so many people happy to buy into Mel' s Catholic fundamentalism. What I find hard to stomach is any public figure using their position to push extreme views, whatever religious denomination, creed or faith they represent.

I will not be going to this film, and having read some of the agenda he’s trying to promote I have stopped watching any film featuring Mr Gibson.

Agnostic and proud of it!

Besides, I have never forgotten the a third rate Aussie actor playing one of my counties national heroes.

I really dont no how i feel on this movie, i guess it would be intresting from one point of view but from another it just seems like someone trying to cash in on the stroy of christ.

While I am not a fundamentalist, I have no problem with him making a movie about a subject close to his heart. His Views on Catholicism are not for everyone. You have every right not to see it if thats what you want.

And please remember that Mr. Gibson was born & raised (until age 14 anyway) here in the great state of New York.

I enjoyed Braveheart ( I have seen it about 8 times), It caused me to look into history, my husband's heritage and a beautiful country.

As for making money...thats what movie makers try to do.

There isn't really "fundamentalism" in Catholocism... that word is used to describe some Muslims and Protestants and possibly some splinter groups from Catholic sects. (though there is a problem in the Roman Catholic church with converts from some protestant faiths who still cling to fundamentalist ideas)

From what I understand, Mel Gibson is what is called a Catholic "Traditionalist". (Pre Vatican II Catholocism -- a little intolerant of changes in the Catholic faith and much more mystical).

I see people complaining about public figures "pushing" thier viewpoints from time to time, and I have never understood the complaint. From my perspective, they merely "present" their views, and I think rightly so, just as we, and you in your post above, have presented your view. They do tend do so on a necessarily grander scale, as I am sure nearly any of us with opinions would if we had the means to do so.

To me, pushing one's views is more like what Osama Bin Laden and his group did when they interposed some aircraft on innocent and unsuspecting people then sent out video stating they did it because we do not want to live by their views and they were ed because were friends with people they hate so they decided to kill and scare the bejesus out of us.

You see the difference? One is presented, as a choice, the other is forced.

If anything, I see the movie may have the great potential to have people learn about someone I think was a great gift to humanity -- whether you believe in His divinity or not, the teachings are valuable either way as a religion or a philosophy. And in these times, more and more people are searching for meaning in their lives, and many times they look in places that the whole of humanity would be better if they had not -- take as a point the growing number of militant fundamentalists from many religions and frothing at the mouth atheists who seem to take on atheism as a religion and creed in itself at the expense of the rights of others)

I think the world could use some knowledge of someone who was put to death for saying, in effect, "Hey, guys, how about we just love one another, huh?"

But, back to the film in question, I haven't seen it yet, and I will go -- I love the story -- but it seems some people are having problems about it because it makes the Jews of the time look bad. Ok, this I don't get. In the New Testament it WAS the Jews that had Him put to death... and THIS is the controversy about this film?? So let's see, it's OK to show the romans as bad, but not the Jews and the Pharisees. At times like this I am glad and proud to say I am not politically correct, especially when being politically correct means denying truths to make people "feel better" -- or rather, so as not to offend other like minded politically correct automatons. <-- yeah I called politically correct people automatons.

Ah well, just had to rant a bit. I feel better now :)

Christian ( but not the kind you are thinking of ) and proud of it.

After reading some of the interviews with Mel Gibson, I really don't think he plans (or cares) if this is a big financial success or not. It appears to be a labor of love, not for purely financial gain.

If he wanted a hit, he would have followed Hollywood's biblical epic rules:

- No accuracy with languages. Everyone speaks english, no matter what culture. Romans usually speak with an English accent

- Jesus usually has piercing blue eyes (we really have no idea what color eyes he had, but based on the region, probably brown).

- A superstar for the part of Jesus, or the people surrounding Jesus.

- No accuracy for the clothing, dress, customs, or actual events of the period.

heh I always loved the romans with the brittish accents ;)

And why is it in those movies the figures of Jesus and the disciples always spoke in english, but with an ALMOST but not quite brittish accent that nobody speaks like? I always called it "religious movie accent".

Speaking of brit accents, why do the bad guys always have brittish accents, like in star wars etc. ?

As far as my personal beliefs go, regarding the Bible, I'm going to keep those to myself. I don't believe everything Mel Gibson believes, or a lot of other people, for that matter. Suffice it to say I am a Catholic with a love of history. That's not always so easy to reconcile. But I was interested to hear what he had to say. I enjoyed the interview.

I will definitely be going to see this. As mentioned before, crusifiction is violent. Previous movies have failed to capture the true beating that Christ received, for whatever reason. I do not think that Mel is pushing his personal views, he is bringing the victorious Christ to the screen in a way that more closely adheres to Biblical description (both old test prophecy and the Gospels).

The language used is almost irrelevant. The visual is the story.

I have seen a picture book from the movie and it looks great. Just looking at the still pictures brought a tear to my eye. What a Blessing.
