Good Lord have mercy! Suck is not a bad word. I see nothing wrong in what the OP said. I am about to turn 40 for the record. The word is nothing to get your drawers in bunch over. Maggie

I agree completely. I can't lie though and say that I haven't enjoyed reading this thread. Especially with such controversy over a common place, innocent word. I understand it may have had different meanings a few decades ago (and still can have that meaning depending on the usage), but in present day and in the way it was used in this thread, the word is 100% completely harmless. I can't believe it is even debatable.

Whatever they are referring to, MILF hasn't been around long enough to figure out if it sucks or not, and we already know that about SGE. But to say that about Space, Buzz and especially TTA is simply wrong and short-sighted.

Not only don't I find it funny, it makes me question the people who run the site and the reporting.
Well, being taken out of context it's not that funny. It was just a random joke that we made when crossing over MILF and Stich on the People Mover, which you can see in a video that part of one of our recent updates.

Anyone that reads our site knows that we say a lot of stuff that is tounge-in-cheek. Take it for what it's worth.

Here's the update that it came from:
http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=385969

Why don't you look at the full thing before having a debate over something that it seems most of you haven't read yet.

PS. Oh yeah, and "suck" isn't a dirty word in the eyes of Disney. It's used in TV shows like Even Stevens and Lizzy McGuire. (Sorry, a bit of random info from when I used to work on the Disney Studios lot.) Might not be found in the animated movies and shows, but it's certainly used in their "tween" shows.

Would you use it in public? To a total stranger to describe something? As part of your polite conversation?

Whatever your answer, you're entitled to your opinion. Those of us who would like to see more of a sense of decorum on this site are entitled to ours.

Perchance do you have a quote on the pretentious and pompous?

No doubt there are some who are offended buy the work of Renaissance artists and count the Venus Di Milo as vulgar. Personally I often use industrial language at work, not because of some academic failings, or limited vocabulary but because its what people understand and respond to. Besides is there a word in the English language as adaptable and can convey a whole range of emotion as the F word?

Hooray for the boobies.:sohappy:

Well, you make a good point, kind of what I was pointing out in my original reply. On a family web board I would not use that type of language. Have I used it in a hockey locker room or during a game; yes. When I was in the "labor" force did I use it: yes. As a manager having lively adult discussions have I used it: yes. Do I use it in settings where I am with my family or in public; no.

Also, when I have (and probably will again) use "industrial language" it is usually because I do not put any thought into it and that's what comes out; especially playing hockey or driving in Boston.

By the way, I do not believe that academic credentials equal class. Some of the classiest people I have ever met have had limited academic achievement; some of the most classless people I have met have multiple post-graduate degrees. Class is not education dependent.

you must wear glasses if your always looking down your nose like that

I am not looking down on anyone. Where I grew up and where I am keep me pretty grounded and accepting of people. That doesn't keep me from speaking my opinion though.

I gotta disagree that vulgarity is (always) the refuge of the unintelligent.
George Carlin has a mind like a steel trap, and the guy can cuss with the best of 'em, just as one example.

Absolutely true. George Carlin is hilarious, but do we want to post one of those routines on this board?

um, maybe youve no sense of humor?

No I have a sense of humor, I just don't see why its fun to post insults about the attractions at WDW simply because you personally don't like them. Probably 90% of average WDW visitors enjoy them, which is the reason they were built. You guys need to understand that they are Disney's target audience, not a handful of whiny WDW fanatics who don't like change, or anything character related, and want WDW to remain a museum forever.

If you don't like the park then don't visit, simple as that. Maybe the there will be shorter waits for the rest of us who don't whine about everything Disney does.

Free Speech

But in the end, offensiveness is defined in the eyes of the beholder, and your point is well taken. :)

Since this thread has drifted I figured I should throw in my two sense too, I think this point here can be a very dangerous and slippery slope. While this is a moderated board we must accept there are some rules to be followed and since this thread is still alive and well with a Mod posting it in I have no question that this word does not violate the rules of this board and therefore cannot be that offensive.

But I think in general speak if we base everything on what the eye of the beholder views as offensive or not we will quickly find you can speak any sentence and you will find someone somewhere who finds it offensive. In a world where radio talk show hosts can barely make jokes anymore I think we should all air on the side of caution before we completely eliminate free speech.

Um, hello. Did you read the update that you're taking our comment out of context on? We LOVE WDW. We had an AWESOME day. And like I explained in my last post it was a "tounge in cheek" comment.

You know, a JOKE.

Like "ha ha, look at that."

Did you find it funny?

I honestly don't care.

The point is...*IT WAS A FREAKING JOKE!!!"

Regardless if you found it funny or not.

Stop taking everything so seriously.

You got it. When you walk through the gates of a Disney park you lose all privileges of having a personal opinion. You have to have the same opinion of the first time guests and like everything they like. If you think that the non-fans overwhelmingly dislike an attraction, then you are still not allowed to have those negative feelings because you are wrong. The every day visitor loves everything that features a character or anything that replaces an attraction that was loved by fans. Carousel of Progress could be replaced tomorrow with a series of benches and you would be expected to love the change.

Still clear? :p

Yup, throw in your two sense of general speak and create free speech so talk show hosts will be able to make jokes again.

Your comments were the nexus of something...

My point was that people will become offended based on their own values. You cannot force them to not take offense.

I disagree, but if TL does suck to you as much as you are saying, then dont go, its that simple. There are other lands in the MK that you can enjoy.

Thanks for the advice, but I'd prefer to continue going so that no one can accuse me of not being qualified to have an opinion on it.

In all sincerity, though, Space Mountain is near the bottom of my list when I'm visiting attractions at MK. So occasionally, I do end up skipping it...with no regrets.

Warning, more thread drift...

This thread is funny. So much back and forth over the appropriateness (or lack thereof) of the word "suck" and no one is offended enough about the above quote to warrant a complaint. To me, "get your drawers in a bunch" has a far more specific meaning these days than the word in question.

Typically, I'm pretty conservative socially but I wasn't offended by the word at all. Honestly, the last thing that crossed my mind when the word was used by the OP was some vulgar image. To this thirty-something, it meant the same thing as "stinks". As someone mentioned earlier, context means a lot. For example, if someone posted something like "Stitch's Great Escape sucks the life out of me", would anyone think that person was intending something vulgar? I don't think so because the context has nothing to do with the vulgar usage of the word. Like it or not, words and their associated implicated meanings change.

**Thinks about concluding with "It sucks but it's true" but doesn't for fear of offending someone** :o

I agree with your last statement wasn't trying to say you did or didn't it was more I purposefully took your words out of context to make a point to the other people that say suck shouldn't be used, sorry!

My point mostly wasn't about radio jocks though that seems to be the easiest example lately(I know of at least 3 in my area that have gotten the axe lately for no good reason) its more the PC-ness of America (and by PC-ness I mean no only what the mom said but also that we need to be PC in that we might offend someone so we shouldn't say it attitude) basically is the cheapening of our first amendment right. OK I'm off my soap box sorry all!

Just stepping back in to clarify.

As stated, since the word was not censored, it is acceptable. I personally have used it in family settings, with variations, but not in public. But I also understand that it is used in a totally different context by those more than a decade younger than I, so I don't usually say anything (as a mod) UNLESS I get a complaint. And even then, I do not edit the post.

If I'm still around in 20 years, I hope I get the chance to see many of you complaining about someone using the F-bomb in the title of a thread posted on a "family" board (if internet discussion forums still exist) and the responses you get from the younger generation.

Back on topic, TL has never been my favorite, and at this stage in my life, only ranks above Toontown and Main Street.

I haven't been to WDW since these 2 new attractions opened and am looking forward to them. I generally don't take too much stock in general opinions on things in WDW since I find so much of it to be subjective. I love some things that others choose to pass by. But that is the joy and wonder of WDW. There is something for everyone.

And if there is nothing at WDW for you, you will save yourself a lot of money. :ROFLOL:

I agree, Stitch's Great Escape (and Tomorrowland in general) is the Nexus of Suck. Whenever I pass by it, I'm sucked in and I have a great time. I haven't been in Laugh Floor yet, and while I still don't believe it belongs in Tomorrowland and I truly miss Timekeeper, I'll give it a shot when I'm there next. I don't miss Alien Encounter, and never will. I'm quickly coming up on 37, and I truly believe Stitch has improved Tomorrowland. I applaud them for creating an attraction that can be enjoyed by children of all ages.
And to join in the debate about "suck," I see nothing wrong with the word. I'm sure many think I suck for liking Stitch's Great Escape and disliking Alien Encounter. I can live with that. I've been called so much worse.

I don't disagree with you Mom just wanted to through out a different point of view, sorry my liberal heart is a bit touchy about this stuff lately I guess hope you know no harm meant.

And getting back on topic myself, I used to love TL but since AE and TK have ceased to exist along with just the general de-theming of the area I would have to think I won't like it so much when I get down in Aug. I will let you all know with my first ever WDWMagic trip report when I get back then!:sohappy:

Personally, I don't find the word "suck" a bad word unless its used as a verb for a particular purpose ( you know what I mean :lookaroun ).
