Well this new Jolly Holiday sign looks like it’s shaping up to be a downgrade. Are they just going with flat digital sign? I believe the old one might have had the digital popcorn lights but they were recessed into the actual physical 3D letters? This one is just flat. Which also begs the question why not a nice old school sign with popcorn lights like Plaza Inn? At Pixar Pier you have popcorn lights as far as the eye can see and on Walt’s Main Street/ the hub we’re doing digital? Am I missing something?

Its not digital, but it could be backlit from behind. We'll have to wait and see once it lights up at night.

As for the why, possible to save on maintenance over the long run. Beyond that other than being a design choice who knows.

My googling ability fails me. What’s happening now with downtown Disney, particularly the D+ building (beside the Star Wars trading post) and this new thing by din tai fung?

The image you pasted is the location of the new Earl of Sandwich and Carnaby Tavern building. Here is the concept art which is taken in about the same spot:

Here is the overhead view with the red arrow point in the direction of the camera:

Regarding D+ (assuming you mean the old ESPN building on the top left) it is currently getting a facelift on the outside, and the inside is being restructured for three new retail spaces (according to recent permits). We don't know yet what is going there.

I have a feeling they decided it was no longer worth the fight to keep the other sign working. It was constantly having issues.

A sad change though, the popcorn lights are way better.

I agree but I’m still not certain the old sign while more detailed and 3D had pop corn lights. I thought it was a light board recessed into the sign behind the letters. Which if so, is still way better than this new flat sign.

I always thought it was a bit of a nod to the original Mary Poppins poster, back when they used this style of lettering as shorthand for Broadway musical:

Good catch! Very well could be. I’m sure they’ll go with that look again but bummer that the sign is so flat.
Well if that is indeed the look they are going for again then it’s possible it’s not done. It obvious it’s still missing pieces, like the “Bakery Cafe” sign beneath. So we don’t know if the final product will actually be so flat looking or not.

I’m talking about the Main part of the sign. I expect the penguin on top and “bakery cafe” to come back.

I know what you’re talking about. But it’s obvious the entire sign is not finished given the other missing pieces. This main piece could still be incomplete (still needs its lights added) or even a temporary placeholder sign.

I was wondering if they might install some of the 3d lettering over the flat sign.

I was thinking the same thing as the flat sign is just the backdrop, so yes I think it’s possible. Or some other lighting package that makes the letters seem as though they are more 3D.

Yeah considering all the lengths they re going though to get the park nice n shiny for the 70th it would be kind of odd to downgrade the Jolly Holdiay sign into a flat digital sign especially considering the land it resides in.

Agreed, and unless this is a temporary placeholder that will be replaced it 100% won't be digital as that is not a digital display.
