EDITED because I hit the post button too soon. Oopsie...

Surprised the kid with an impromptu trip to the DLR this weekend. My mini-trip report:

  • weather was hot and humid (humid to us - it was NOT a "dry heat" and we noticed! haha)
  • crowds were very manageable
  • Lightning Lane wasn't necessary, but I bought it when I bought the tickets, so we used it
  • I did NOT buy individual lightning lane passes (because, no Disney, you don't get to do that) and they weren't needed
  • New things to us: Avengers Campus (meh); Tropical Hideaway (thumbs up); ToonTown Remodel (thumbs up); Indy remodel (thumbs up); World of Color One (ok); Philharmagic (ok)
  • Mobile Food Order worked great this trip (we had lots of trouble on the last trip)
  • Entering the park was a breeze (we had lots of trouble on the last trip)
  • The strawberry shortcake dole whip was delicious. :)
  • Storybook land needs some landscaping attention - lots of weeds :(
  • Not sure why, but this was the first trip where I really felt like DCA needs more to do (maybe because the change from fast pass to lightning lane limited our re-riding of attractions?)
Overall we had a great trip! We were able to do and see everything that we wanted in the 3 day trip. For RSR and Rise, we avoided crazy lines by just waiting for them to go down (because they will) and then got in the line when they went back up. That resulted in about a 20 min wait for Rise and a 40 minute wait for RSR. Yes, you can also be there at rope drop to get the same thing, but we wanted to sleep. :)

And for those of you that hate massive crowds, but want to see things like parades and fireworks (like my husband), here are my tips:
  • book a meal at Carnation Cafe during the parade time and sit outside; watch the parade from your table (slightly obstructed by people, but good enough for the crowd averse)
  • watch the fireworks while riding Autopia (this was so fun!)
  • watch the fireworks from the back side of the lagoon in DCA - there is a pretty good view over Mermaid's building

P.S. When did World of Color stop using fire?

One more random thought....

Since I made a last-minute decision to take the family to DL, I was limited in hotel options. One hotel that had available rooms was the Disneyland Hotel. For a double queen, standard view room, they wanted over $700 per night! And they don't even give you a microwave! $700+ for what? I just couldn't justify that kind of money for what they offer.

Has anyone else noticed hidden mickeys disappearing? The one on the chest plate at the end of pirates is now missing. And bones wearing the mickey ears in Indiana Jones is also MIA. Plus they never fixed the shadow on the wall for the droid in the star tours queue. Not the shadow box hidden mickey but the actual shadow on the wall after Rex.

Yep. I was there last week and the weather was basically identical to what it would have been if I had stayed in IL. Heck, it even briefly rained!

100%. I struggled last trip, but this time around I really felt like I mastered the app, how to schedule food with mobile order, etc. The ability to modify LLs I also found to be a gamechanger in a positive way.

It did feel like entering the park overall was easier than in the past. Not really sure why, as it didn't seem like they did anything differently. The lack of rerides is my big issue with LL/Genie.

Post-Murphy flameout, I believe.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the passing of Paul Reubens, who of course provided the voice for Captain Rex on Star Tours and in the cantina.

The news of his sudden passing hit me like a ton of bricks. It's rare that a celebrity's passing made me feel genuinely sad, but this one did.

I made the young members of my family (30ish married couples) watch the 3 minute intro to Pee-Wee's Christmas Special last night.

As most smart young things today around 30 years old, they had no idea that network TV in the distant 1980's was so bizarre and yet so fabulous. They sat in slack-jawed amazement in between laughs. Kids today have no idea what they missed out on. :(

Oh! I hadn't heard. Stupid cancer....

I will always remember him as the vampire with the best death scene ever in the original Buffy movie.
RIP. :(

It didn't bother me as much in DL, but I really felt it in DCA. That's why I think it hit me with how little there is to do there.

Overall, LL worked well, but it really needs to be removed from a couple of rides. Haunted Mansion, WebSlingers, and Monsters really do not need LL. All it does is make the standby lines unbearable. If they insist upon including LL for them, then would it kill Disney to add some shade to the queues? All 3 of the rides I mentioned can EASILY have shade. They have some umbrellas in the HM queue, but only about a quarter of what they need to make that line bearable. Webslingers has a whole section that is enclosed by 3 walls. Why didn't they add a roof? In the case of Monsters, they don't use the shaded portion of the queue and force the non-LL riders into the sunny section of the queue. It just seems silly that they don't just blanket the queues with umbrellas. Easy and cheap = win for Disney and win for the guests.

I just remembered something that I forgot to add in my trip report (and it's a complaint, so I just *HAVE* to include it on these boards, right? Miserable hive and all of that...):

We attempted to enjoy Oga's Cantina (it was closed on our last visit). There was no line and we got right in. The hostess brought us to our standing-only table and said a server would be along with a menu. So we stood there waiting. And waiting. And waiting. And waiting. No one offered us a menu. No one acknowledged that we existed. After 10-15 minutes, we gave up and left. Oh well, we saved some money and got to see the inside. But I have to admit, all I could think of was "World Class Service!(TM)". 🤣

He was also in Back to the Beach with Annette! I feel like no one else saw this movie, but my brother, sister and I always quote it to each other.

Splash Mountain is on this new Disney Visa card but apparently they were planning the Tiana takeover long before the events of 2020 🙄

mickEblu, I mean this in all good humor:

Call me nuts, but I think it’s… possible… that every department and business partner connected to the Disney corporation might not be 100% informed and in perfect sync with everything every single other department and business partner is doing at any given moment 100% of the time. I could be wrong; maybe they all really are perfect and completely informed about what every other department is doing always every time! 😃

The ride poster for Alice in Wonderland still lists The Upside Down Room (which hasn’t existed for 4O years) as part of the attraction.

I’m truly certain someone at Disney has at least casually been talking about retheming Splash for a long, long time. There are different “levels” of talk. But anyone at Disney looking at DL’s future would have most likely been aware that Splash’s origins could become an issue someday. It’s good to have a plan. Was it a scribble on a notepad? A comment in an elevator? Was it a full storyboarded exploration of the idea? We might never know.

But PR will always PR.

Also, I LOVE that card design! I wouldn’t have changed it to be accurate if it were up to me! I’d put a poster of that image on my wall! 😃

Ok I recently went on all of the Fantasyland dark rides in the span of a couple trips (so I can make fresh comparisons) and I think I finally have my official order that is set in stone.

1. Alice
2. Toad
3. Pan
4. Snow White
5. Pinocchio

I would tend to agree that's my list too.

Did you throw some spare change into Snow White's dungeon enchanted happy pastel pre-show room?

Solid order TP. I expect no less from you. Looking at it now it feels like the only acceptable order. I’ll allow for Toad and Alice to be swapped if someone feels strongly about it but that’s about it.

Lol I did not. I try to close my eyes and not look at the happy dungeon bedroom.
