There is definitely a hit to the ego for Chris Rock.
I really don’t agree with this at all and can’t imagine Chris feels this way either. Will permanently made a fool of himself on his own, and Chris came out of the situation as the clear favorite. The academy thanked him, his comedy ticket sales skyrocketed… what more needs to be done? I don’t understand.

If I were Chris Rock I’d be sitting on my couch (maybe with an ice pack) thinking “wow, that went really well for me” and planning jokes/skits about it for my next show.

I think you might be surprised. On the Dana Carvey and David Spade podcast a few months ago he talked about the bullying he went through as a young guy, the one time he retaliated and thought he might have killed someone, and what his therapist has told him about why that has made him so afraid of expressing anger.

This moment seems a little purposely designed to test all of the things he has been going through in therapy.

I’ll listen to the episode but in that case, I’d think he would be extra proud of the mature way he handled it. I seriously can’t imagine a universe in which he’s sitting at home thinking he should’ve done anything differently, much less, retaliated.

No, you're right. This specific situation with Chris Rock has been fantastic for him personally and professionally. So long as he doesn't screw it up in the next few weeks, he's coming out of this looking like a saint. I can't think of any way that Chris Rock could have handled this better.

I even think the Academy leadership and telecast producers handled it as well as they could, in the moment. I disagree with most folks who are saying "Well, when the famous man who won the Oscar for Best Actor got up and assaulted the presenter on stage they should have..." in the middle of a live telecast beaming around the world.

I loved the insight the Oscars producer gave to Good Morning America this week; he said that every single TV camera was trained on a famous celebrity in the audience looking horrified and there was literally nothing they could cut to, or do, or pull an emergency brake for.

Unless the Oscars were going to go to this screen for 30 seconds while they broke to the next Lucid Motors commercial....

I just meant that in general, a man never likes to get sucker punched in public and then left there standing around in front of friends and strangers trying to play it off. But these sorts of unhinged and idiotic physical assaults usually play out in dive bars sometime after 1am. It's never happened at the Oscars before, and Chris Rock has handled it all beautifully.

I don’t know , but it smells like a giant fake stunt - after all isn’t that what Hollywood is at its core - fake people doing fake things ? Will smith has years of experience acting even as the great Muhammad Ali - watch again with a more discerning eye ,nothing either of them does during that 60 seconds resembles instinctual human behavior from the initial laugh at the joke by will smith to the time he walks back to his seat

Welp, Will Smith late this afternoon has just resigned as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. In an attempt (that might not work) to prevent him from having his Oscar taken away when Academy leadership meets in two weeks to decide punishment for him.

If this were a planned stunt all still playing out, I'm not sure giving up his membership in the most prestigious organization his global industry has, was really a wise move. It would be like a licensed and well regarded prominent doctor resigning from the American Medical Association a week after he punched the awards show host at the national convention in Las Vegas. That's not a stunt, that's career suicide that obviously no one would plan.

“To calm Will down they gave him a statue of Jada.” LOL. One of the best jokes I’ve heard so far.

In regards to your comment I agree. Will is the one that is probably super embarrassed and Chris has handled himself very professionally. Chris’ career was great and will continue to be great but I’m sorry as a man with two 🍒 I need to get you back for slapping me in the face on stage once way or another. Unfortunately when you miss the narrow window immediately after it happens your options are fewer. So maybe Chris’ approach makes him a better man than me or maybe it makes him a 🍑. It’s open for interpretation.

I might be misinterpreting you, but, while I think there is hypocrisy around violence, for me it doesn't follow that because there are sports and movies in which violence is more or less tolerated people can't be shocked or condemn when it occurs elsewhere.

There are even entire professional and Olympic sports that involve physical assault; wrestling, boxing, karate, MMA, etc.

For example, I can't go up and hit someone at a bar and then use hockey or football as a defence. Those are contained venues that more or less function as controlled outlets for violence.

Exactly. You can't go into Target and slap the customer service clerk who will only give you store credit on the toaster that you don't have a receipt for, and then tell the Target manager and the responding police officers "Hey, you don't watch hockey games?! They always slap each other around in the NHL! I shouldn't be subject to different standards of behavior just because I'm in a Target and this toaster is crap!"

Maybe I am wrong here, but I also don't think many people are saying Will Smith should be banished from motion pictures, let alone society.

You aren't wrong. I haven't seen that sentiment expressed by anyone here, or anyone in the media.

Will Smith is a elitist nutjob with behavioral issues and an over-inflated ego the size of the Goodyear Blimp. But he shouldn't be banished from society and movies forever. He should just be a better person and not beat up comedians. But he should be subject to some serious punishment and reduction in benefits and status from the industry organization (Oscars) that awarded and feted him last Sunday evening.

I just think Chris was capable of delivering a couple better comebacks in the heat of the moment. I find Will yelling obscenities from the crowd more embarrassing/ cringey than the slap itself. I hate when Chris responded “Oh I will” to Will yelling “keep my wife’s name out yo…” instead of hitting Will with a nice joke/ comeback to embarrass him. That was the saddest moment for me.

Oh, I agree! I thought that weird and profane yelling from his VIP seat was actually more shocking than the slap. But the whole world was talking about the slap this past week.

That yelling bit was the part that proves to me Will Smith and his wife are not fun people to be around, and they need help. The way that entire Dolby Theatre went dead silent during the yelling also proved to me it wasn't a stunt, and it was really happening. That's when I stared with an open mouth at the TV for at least 30 seconds.

It was also in that moment that Will Smith seemed to prove his real self. And his wife proved who she really is as she was caught laughing at the assault and seemed to think her husband was doing the right thing by ending his career there.

All the apologies in the world days later can't erase that immediate reaction we all saw on giant screens of 4K HDTV by Will and his wife. Another reason why I just love modern TV technology! There's nothing you can hide from when it's in 4K on a 70 inch screen with the ability to pause, rewind, slow down, replay endlessly, etc.

Many foolish people today who get caught doing stupid stuff probably wish Americans all still had 21 inch screens in 480p and a rental VCR from Blockbuster so no one could really see it. 🤣

Smith's preemptively resigning the Academy was an astute move on his or his team's part. He gets ahead of the sanctions that were sure to ensue and makes this his choice of contrition, rather than facing the humiliation of expulsion (or other options).

Agreed.

It's the first smart thing he's done since he got out of the limo at the Dolby Theatre last Sunday afternoon.

Let's see if it buys him anything, or works in any way. ;)

I nearly forgot about Chris Rock laughing and ki-kiying amongst white people casually throwing the “N” word around, Rock not saying a word and allowing the buffoonery.

I take back what I said. Very happy he got slapped. It was a long time coming.

There.

Wait so he does that ^ ,
On top of at the 2016 Oscars so white he calls out the Smiths for protesting Oscars so white,
On top of this Oscars he made a jab at Jada being bald despite making a documentary about black girl hair struggles that includes baldness and alopecia. He kinda seems Uncle Tomy 😳

Too bad like it’s been said here, he came out of this the clear winner, so I don’t really think he’ll reflect on it in a productive way/I don’t think he feels bad for making the joke. And it’s really too bad that everyone just talks about Will and the slap 😑.

As you stated, very typical Uncle Tom behavior. It really makes a lot of sense as to why he’s loved by white people. He gives “N” word passes out and isn’t afraid to mock black people in front of said white people. What a guy! I can’t stand him. But of course, many people are flocking to his defense. Whatever.

One thing I will agree with others here… The Academy is trash.

He sold 25 times as many tickets to his comedy tour in the following two days than in the entire month before. I’m sure a part of Chris is happy he got slapped too.

Also this is sad and bizarre.

It's so great he assaulted a comedian on Live TV. I'm glad Will is your hero and can do no wrong!

Yes he hit someone in the face and cussed them out, but come on he's in The Fresh Prince! And Independence Day!

Of course he did. And some people were upset that he didn’t reference the incident for jokes.
