Comics101-
MaterA113- Great! Simple and concise. I love that you took a different approach to the “pirates” theme, I knew many people would do pirates, you set yourself apart from the other pirates, that is why you have my top… I love the use of LCI Bird and Monkey… Once again Great Job!
KingMickey-
Disneyson1- First of all, this is a very nice idea in which to bring back the Barker Bird. He touched many visits to the park and he deserves a place. Already I commend you on the idea. The story, though, seemed like a very forced idea. The BIRD is holding auditions for CREW???? Very forced, and something tells me it was thrown in later in order to have a “story”, as Disney Parks seems to do now. You don’t NEED a “storybook story” if the setting seems natural enough. It really could have stopped after “Barker Bird is guarding the ammunition”. The monkey could just be there with the pirate because he found him, it’s his new pet, whatever. I can see where you were trying to go with the idea, though. Besides the lame story, the theming of the area was excellent. I could see the area from just the description, and the picture put everything in perspective. Everything not explained in the descrtiption was explained in it. It was really wonderful, and something other contestants could, in fact, learn from. The AREA itself was very well thought out, though next time, think about story. And think of a way to keep those brats who will inevitably come to the Meet n’ Greet from stealing the treasure.
Wannabe Walt- I like that you have brought back the Barker Bird and in an interactive way! Good use of references in your plans as well. Your story idea is clever as well, it could use a little more detail though. Also, I'm not convinced that a "puppet Jack" will be effective.

wdwbeepbop-
MaterA113- I like this idea. But the one thing you did do that wasn’t need, IMO, was you changed the Swiss Family Tree House. You could have just left the SFT there in its original form, and placed Tarzan near the side where you have them and it would still be good… But overall really good job… I like the photo ops up until the meet with the characters. One final thing that I though you could have done a bit more is themeing the queue, I know its outdoors, but maybe it could have been inside, and themed to the jungle or his treehouse more… Or even, since you redid the treehouse, you could have just had him Jane, and terk throughout the attraction…
KingMickey-
Disneyson1- Your idea was good, and well defended in the first line. Still, there’s the idea that you did indeed just create a clone. I don’t know what the other judges will say, but I think that your changes to the attraction were barely enough to not be a copy. Of course, the storyline fits well into Adventureland. Onto the Meet ‘n Greet, the vine idea was quite original, but I can’t help but wonder what would happen if a particular Jane was scared of heights… Your concept art was quite good, although I could imagine what the area would be like without it. I see you took the idea of an AA elephant and the brook at the foot of the tree from Hong Kong’s tree, but… the idea was very smart, something Disney would ACTUALLY do, not just a pipe dream. You have a very good intuition for that, I think. Still, changing the name of an Elephant is not worthy of the top rank. Let’s try to be original next time.
Wannabe Walt- I know this seems like a great location for a meet-and-greet, however, I think it would cause problems for people that only want to see the tree house and not meet the characters. Also, if it is Tarzan's Treehouse, I would like to meet Tarzan IN his treehouse, not by the creek in the jungle.

Sass-Rvr-
MaterA113- I have to say I am impressed.. I especially like the idea of having it IN THE ATTRACTION, so you have a great, and natural attraction… So you have the boats and buildings etc. (it is in the attraction isn’t it, that is what I got from it) J The one part I didn’t understand was the ‘three rooms’ part because the way I read it, they all seemed to be in the same room… I like the addition of E. Swann, and Barbossa. I do like the theming of the CMs as well, that are the “character handlers”… Great job!!
KingMickey-
Disneyson1- This one is quite tricky to grade. Although your story fit very well into Adventureland, I almost know for sure that the attraction of that caliber would NOT fit inside the ride. Maybe next door, but, anyway… the idea was FANTASTIC. It is exactly the way the company should be heading with these types of things. The idea of a smaller Shipwreck Cove is quite incredible. Demand for these characters is out the WHAZOO and this is the perfect place to meet them. It’s a great alternative, and easily one of the best projects here. You’ll do well, I’m sure…
Wannabe Walt- I think you are going in a good direction, however, I see a few problems with Shipwreck Cove:1. It is a HUGE place...it would be very difficult to successfully shrink it down to a realistic scale. 2. It is not a well-known setting---perhaps use Tortuga instead? It is in all 3 movies. I like your choices for the characters. Also, great job incorporating the theme into everything (cast member costumes, etc).

TrevorA-
MaterA113- I like how you tried the story element of this, but I don’t see how it connects to the characters. Im sorry L The thing I don’t see is how African Colonial House blends in with Jungle Book??? Because the Jungle Book is in Asia… I do like the rotating schedule, but im a bit confused also… I once again don’t see how Polynesian Lilo, Stitch, Mickey, and Pluto fit with the “African” theme. It seems though that most of the “story” has to do with The Jungel Book, so I don’t know how it connects with Africa. So I have to say that the theming and elements don’t mesh well and such.. Even though guests might not really notice, Disney will, so that is why WDI is so meticulous with details, details, details…I do like the Interactive characters on the chandeliers… That is a great idea..
KingMickey-
Disneyson1- Although a LITTLE generic, an all around good idea. It felt like a real Disney story. Plus, you included some good characters, good story with the storage center, and a generally good idea of the challenge. The “umeetable” character idea was very good and in the vein of modern Disney. A great intro and a fun idea with the underlying story explaining of the closure of the area in a very Tokyo way. GREAT JOB!!!
Wannabe Walt- Great thoughts and ideas! I like the idea of the rotating character schedule, gives it a unique quality. You have successfully themed the meet-and-greet in such a way that it can be suited to hold many different types of characters. Kudos. I also enjoy the background story you have created of a "supposedly haunted Adventureland Veranda".

Jasonflz-
MaterA113- I like the concept of your own “original” character from the Jungle Cruise… But that is where things for me get weird… I don’t see how Jungle Book characters, like Baloo and King Louie fit in with the theme. You have the story and such themed to Ned, but then it just seems that you threw Jungle Book in there.. As for theming, I think you did a good job, but I think you combined too many things, I think you should have just stuck with the Adventure theme, with animals and such, no pirates, because there is no pirates that you are meeting, it could have been themed like the Adventurer’s Club maybe… One final thing, the location for me is a bit odd, I know you wanted Shrunken Ned, but why no place him closer to Jungle Cruise… He seems FAR from Jungle Cruise… Overall good job… Next time stick with one thing and run with it…
KingMickey-
Disneyson1- Story certainly played a part in your post, I see! You were very smart in your connection to The Jungle Cruise and the character of Shrunken Ned. Also, might this have gotten inspiration from VMK’s shack of a similar name? Not a bad thing. It was a smart idea to draw inspiration from that. And I can almost see the “explorers” in the hut (I assume you drew that from The Adventurer’s Club). Overall, a good story for an Adventureland Meet n’ Greet. I can see the idea here with the exterior picture. Although it seems like you almost put a bit of each area and concentrated it, not something I’d imagine is ascetically pleasing (although that might also play into the story!). The idea of treasures was a good one. It would add a bit of grounding to the idea. Not sure if the bats were completely needed. It seemed as if you wanted to squeeze a “wow” factor in somewhere. It felt very last minute. All in all, a good first project. Well done, I say, old chap!
P.S. The “concept art” was completely un-needed. I know you must have felt like you needed to do it, but it didn’t really supplement the idea.

Wannabe Walt- Your story needs a lot or work, you have the basics down but give us much more detail. Also, I was not impressed with the concept art nor your imagery in your descriptions. If you want to convey an image for our imaginations, we need more details. Also, the character's you picked are new to Adventureland (some), but you need to give us a good reason to meet them. Why would I want to meet a random explorer?

General Comments:
MaterA113—Im sorry if I seem mean and such, im not trying to be… I just want you all to understand and improve… Because this was a basic challenge and such, and I want you all to learn and improve so on the FINAL project all of them will be EXCEPTIONAL and it will be hard to choose… J J J

Great! haha yeah mine was not a very realistic idea from the beginning (ask Mater I even pm'd him asking about if the size was required to be realistic.) I was just kind of making a blue sky concept. Disney draws up ALOT of things that realistically will probably never be green-lit (Not to mention work.). Also yeah Shipwreck Cove would be pretty tough to shrink down. I just picked a character that is in demand and tryed to make an immersive attraction not just a couple ropes and banners to mark out the queue and such. But totally understand and am pretty happy with scores and comments!

Next project I'll go for more realism haha. I can't wait to see the darkride concepts when I get back! I had an idea for this one too! oh well.

Thanks again

 I enjoyed the comments and as alway's I enjoy positive criticism.

In response to Mater's comments, I wasn't sure which characters I was going to use for the story. The Jungle Book felt like the best fit but I do see what you are talking about. As for the cluttered thing you brought up, I purposely did that to really get that feel like it was really a musuem of sorts. Captain Ned adventured across the globe so it would make more sense if he brought his collection with him.

In response to Disneyson's comment, I didn't know that there was a shack already in VMK similar. I thought of the concept without taking any inspiration from anything else (aside from the Adventurer's Club). I do agree on the bats. I felt my idea was very weak compared to everyone else's which featured numerous AA's. I just like to incorporate a sense of realism to the concept and with the AA's I felt like I sort of went overboard.

In response to Wannabe Walt, I completely agree with your comments on the visuals. I felt like I needed to do it and yet I had no idea what to do. I am planning on doing hand drawn next time which I feel is an easier way to do an image. Photoshop never gives me that satisfied feeling I am hoping for but I still did enjoy it all.

Anyway, thanks for the comments. I hope I can do a better project the next time.

it was 5 (best) to 1 (least)... that is why the count down... That way when we do add them, the person with the highest score will win, and lowest will be eliminated...

I appreciate your criticism, Mater. I was trying to aim for a generic Adventure theme, and it just so happens that the African-Colonial style architechture is what the Veranda Restaurant was built after.

Thank you for your opinions.

First off, sorry that my judging scores came in a little late. I was just waiting for the extra day, just in case someone decided to hand in their project. I must say that for a first project, these were absolutely amazing!

Jasonflz- I really liked your tie-in with the Jungle Cruise! It fits the area really well and expands on the Jungle Cruise attraction. I also liked that you used Jungle Cruise/Shrunken Ned-related characters, whom are never seen outside of the attraction. I liked how delicately themed your queue and the actual Meet and Greet room was, as well. I do have to agree with Mater that the addition of the Jungle Book characters through the Meet and Greet off a little bit. It should have either be themed to Shrunken Ned or the Jungle Book, but mixing both could be rather messy. The story of the Meet and Greet just got mixed up. It should stick to one particular theme, whether it’s a character, attraction or movie, and carry it consistently throughout the attraction.

Comics101- I really liked that you brought the Barker Bird back, as well as adding in Jack, who’s considerably a new character from the Pirates franchise. I loved that your theming of the Meet and Greet was similar to the interior of the Pirates attraction. I think that’s one of the most amazing themed queues and I enjoyed that you carried that style of theme and architecture into your project. And your story was very cleverly executed. Though, I do agree that seeing an LCI parrot next to a puppet monkey could be a bit unbelievable, but I really enjoyed your project.

Wdwbeepbop- I really liked that you chose the Treehouse to put this Meet and Greet. I always thought it could be put to better use and you successfully did just that. Tarzan would be the obvious theme, inspired of its sister at Disneyland. However, it is a clone of Disneyland’s and I’d like to see something more original take up the space. Thanks for the concept art (I personally don’t look at how well you draw them, just presenting something gives me a better view of your project. I didn’t think your image was bad, either.) And the aerial shot of the Treehouse really helped out too.

Sassagoula-Rvr- I thought your project was very well executed. For a first project, it really showed a lot of different elements regarding the Meet and Greet. Having the Meet and Greet in the attraction is very different and original, but I feel like it might take away from the experience of the ride. I liked how each of the rooms had a different environment, with different props and such. The project was just very consistent of theme and details throughout and that’s what I was looking for. It’s also really great that you tied in the Meet and Greet with the release of POTC4. I did think that the Meet and Greet was a bit too big to fit into the pre-exisitng building, however. I was very impressed with this project and hope you stick around in this competition.

TrevorA- I liked your project a lot! The use of the old Adventureland Veranda was great and the backstory really helped tie the project together; it a added a sense of mystery into Adventureland. It’s great that you used a pre-existing structure, even though you could always build a new structure, but that’s not the point. I thought that having the Meet and Greet be fairly generic was risky, yet actually successful, in the end. I liked that you were able to feature characters from Jungle Book, The Lion King, Tarzan and Lilo and Stitch, all movies which perfectly capture the theme of Adventureland. It was a great project and I thought you did an awesome job on it.

:) Thanks for the comments KingMickey. I thought that only The Jungle Book really fit in with Adventureland so that is why I used it.

Thanks for the comments guys! I also appreciate the constructive criticism.

As for the puppet thing, that was me trying to be realistic (maybe that was a mistake...). I figured the cost of a living animatronic (even one bolted to the floor) is probably through the roof, and it would be much more unrealistic to have two living aa's in the same attraction than to have a Jack puppet.

Thanks again!

O.k., sorry this is late, there are a variety of reasons, anyway, hopefully I have done this right:

Location:
Adventureland Veranda and shops and restaurants near the entrance of Adventureland

I am not 100% sure where the Adventureland Veranda is, a I never got to go when this was open, but as near as I can tell these are close enough together for this to work.

Queue:
You would enter into the village from the Jungle Book and follow a path down to the lake to wait for a few minutes, while standing there, you see an animatronic Mowgli (sp) walk up to the edge of the lake, helping an animatronic version of the girl he fell for, she starts walking back to the village, she doesn't notice that Mowgli is staying behind and he starts walking deeper into the jungle, she turns around to see where Mowgli is and notices he is missing, she asks if you had seen him, you tell her that he is heading into the jungle, she asks you to head into the jungle to try to find him, as she is not allowed to go.

You agree and then see his footprints in the ground (which were not there before he started walking, but appeared after he did) and follow them into the jungle, you first come across a pack of animatronic wolves, you see that Mowgli's footprints stop go into the cave behind them, but you notice the footprints are not coming out, then just as they start growling and jumping towards you, you notice Mowgli running off, you go to follow, you then meet up with an animatronic of theBagheera who poses for a few photos and he tells you that Mowgli has taught him and a few other animals how to speak to humans and you tell him that you are trying to make sure Mowgli gets home safely, he is more than happy to point you in the right direction. Next you come across King Louie, he sees you and you find out that he has moved on from fire and now wants to know about the power of the camera that you are holding, and you agree to show him, if he agrees to give you his autograph, to which he agrees to right away. You then ask if he has seen Mowgli and he shows you what way he went, again, you see footprints in the ground that weren't there when you first came.

Next you see the herd of elephants, who are all ignoring you, then you come to the Hathi Junior (again animatronic) and he'll talk to you , he walks around, he even signs an autograph for you. using his trunk, then he goes into a lake and swims (ok, he really sinks to the bottom, but the lake is really shallow enough to make it look like he is swimming) this is really done to get him off stage so that a double can come on while he is recharging, as this is an advanced animatronic that is not plugged in and will take a lot of power.

You next come across Kaa, he is animatronic, hanging down from a tree, trying to get you to "trust in him". You are taking pictures with him, when you notice something out the corner of your eye and again you see Mowgli's footprints where they hadn't been before.

So you go off to follow him and you come across Baloo, who tells you that he hasn't seen Mowgli. You ask if you can get a photo and some autographs, he agrees of course and just as you are finishing up, Mowgli comes along. They ask if you want to see them do their song and dance from the movie. You say "Yes," and they do, when just toward the end of the song an animatronic Shere Kahn jumps into the scene (yes jumps, just like a real tiger). It starts to get all cloudy above and all of the sudden lightning strikes and starts a fire (yes, real fire), which Mowgli picks up a branch and ends up recreating the scene from the movie. He then runs back towards the village and you follow in that direction. You then see him reunited with his family and satisfied that all is as it should be.

Now you will not doubt have noticed that there is a lot of vocal interaction with the characters, something that isn't common in the parks, yet, this is accomplished by a lot of powerful computers (running either Linux or Mac OS X, but not Windows, as it has too much of a tendency to crash) that determines not only what is said and what an appropriate response would be, but what language was spoken and will give the response in that language. If it can't figure it out, there are cast members backstage monitoring each character to assist if needed, but if all else fails, the computer will default to English.

Please note that upon entering the village you scan your photopass card or are given one at the entrance. The only visible cast members throughout the rest of the attraction are the few that are costumed characters, the rest are behind the scenes and only a moment away if things get out of hand. Natural barriers prevent you from going through too quickly or down a path that is already busy (as there are multiple paths to help speed the line along). The photos are taken by photopass photographers, who are behind the scenes remotely controlling the camera at each spot. These new cameras will be specifically built for this character meet and greet and are able to handle the lighting conditions without the need of an additional flash, in order to help preserve the attraction. But again, you will only scan your photopass card the one time, there is also an RFID chip built into these photopass cards, making it easy to detect from that point on, without you ever needing to get it out again. This is key to making the experience seem more real and at the same time provide photopass service.

If you need help taking a photograph with your own camera, one of the animal's friends will come out to help you, again these will be costumed characters (monkeys, so that they have hands) that may not be from the movie and their backstory is simply that they know the animal and have agreed to assist the people that they meet in taking photos.

There are no backdrops here, because this is an immersive experience and anywhere is a good photo spot, although there will spots designed for the photos, to provide a little better lighting (very subtle difference), for the photopass cameras and to enhance the pictures from the guest's camera a little bit, helping them get a better shot.

In addition, this would use the existing buildings, but would also require adding onto the buildings and major reworking of existing infrastructure to make this work, such as being able to combine the two buildings into one larger building. The land is there as well to add on to the buildings and still keep the themeing of Adventureland and Frontierland. Yes some of the outside of the building would be in Frontierland, but that would be themed accordingly.

My apologies for not having pictures for this one or blueprints, I will aim to do this in the next one.
