Trip Report The GRAND Birthday! *COMPLETED*

“Hey, Ma ~ you’re about to celebrate a BIG birthday. What are you going to do next?”
“I’m going to Disney World!”

If it were only as simple as it sounds in the commercial. But we all know that real life rarely aligns with what is portrayed on TV....or for that matter (dare I say?) social media. My mother was hitting a milestone on 2/1/2019 and I wanted to take her to her favorite vacation destination to celebrate. (The fact that it also happens to be mine was a bonus!) However when I presented the idea to her back in the fall, she was reluctant to accept my offer.

Ten years ago our extended family went to WDW to celebrate her last big birthday. During that trip, paramedics were called because my infant nephew was experiencing breathing difficulties; my sister-in-law got either food poisoning or a bad case of stomach flu which necessitated a doctor coming to her resort room (and an extended stay); and my dear Woody came down with similar symptoms which resulted in an ambulance ride to the ER on the night we arrived home.

Needless to say that was the end of our extended family vacations.

I had to clarify with Mom that I wasn’t planning a big gathering. Still, she wasn’t sure she wanted to go. My father was recovering from some recent health challenges and she was uncertain she’d feel comfortable leaving him. She asked for some time to think it over.

Meanwhile I jumped on some cheap airfare and booked the hotel, figuring it was worth the risk. Just before Thanksgiving, with my dad’s blessing, Mom decided she would like to go.

“Where will we stay?” she asked.
“It’s a big event. Where do you think we should stay?” I answered.
Mom paused and without waiting for her reply I continued: “It’s going to be a grand celebration, so we must stay at the Grand Floridian!”
Mom choked up and said, “I never thought I’d ever be able to stay there.”

Well now she has! And we had a wonderful time at the resort and in the parks. There was even a surprise or two.

As for this:
That's the interesting thing -- something new, fun, or outright bizarre happens on all your trips, and that's what keeps us coming back for more. It's kinda like a written version (with photos), of a Tuvalu WDW reality show. :p Looking forward to the next installment in the series.
Stay tuned for the bizarre!

I wish this trip could have been mother/daughter/granddaughter. Sadly, Em was unable to join us.

Who: Tuvalu and Mom
When: January 29 - February 2, 2019
Where: Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa (the “and Spa” gets me every time!)

@Figment Forever and @figmentfan423 you have a comrade in your affection for the cute purple dragon.....my mother.

Of course I made sure we booked a FP for his attraction.

It was a good choice. The standby line was out the door!

352972

The only disappointment? There was no aroma after our slot machine “win.” (Though some might consider that a blessing!)

Our trip coincided with this:
352975

Fondly referred to as FARTS by our own @sheriffwoody. :joyfull:

Though we didn’t partake of any of the special food offerings, we did explore all the art booths.

We watched the Living Statues in front of the fountain. They fascinate me. I wish I’d taken pictures but I thought we would see them again. (Spoiler alert: we didn’t.)

Guests can wear matching sweatshirts too!
352976

Twinnies!*

* When Tuvalette wears matching outfits with Tuvaleen, she says “twinnies!” Naturally I had to send her these!

The Netherlands hosts a living statues competition every year, should you ever want to expand your travel horizens. It's held in Arnhem. Though you wouldn't be able to expect Shirley status...it's always PACKED.

Good to see you back, @FlaggNL 🙂.

It's good to be back! Nice to read a lot of TR's. Off course I need to prepare my own TR from our last October trip.... but had a bad car accident the day after arriving back home.. so had a lot of other things going on. But everything is more than OK now... so much more time to be back here! And like I said preparing a TR and a possible PTR... for October 2020 :)

Your wish has been heard, and your wish has been granted!

Except it doesn't solve the issue of having to be screened a second time after having already been screened at TTC/CR/Poly/GF. Once that happens it will definitely be better.

That sounds like a sight to see!

I love your matching sweatshirts
Thanks, we loved them too!

❤❤❤ Thanks for the assist!

Thursday, con’t

Mom and I left Future World and began the trek around World Showcase.

First stop was to take a boat ride through Mexico with some feathered friends.
353215

We checked out the painted TOMS display.
353220

It was nice to see the sun even though it didn’t last long.
353217

353219

I thought there might be some FARTS signage in the model train village but there wasn’t.
353218

We couldn’t pass up this “Artful Photo Op”.
Even though Mom has been to Norway (twice!) she couldn’t quite master The Scream.
353221

For reference:
353227

Her Mona Lisa was pretty good!
353222

(A fun animated video of the “real” paintings being replaced by our poses showed up in my Photopass account.)

Had to watch the always entertaining Sergei.

Mom and I walked deeper into Italy. We had lunch plans!

353369

What immediately caught my eye was that the take-out window on the far left of the building was open for business.

353370

Note that this is not Via Napoli take-out, as some posters have insinuated. The pizza served here is NOT the same as what is served inside. This quick serve even has a different name.

Pizza al Taglio

The general consensus of Via Napoli pizza falls into two camps ~ those who hate it (looking at you, @BuddyThomas 😉) and those who love it (the M&Ms @Doc Disney). Mom and I are in the “love it” camp.

What we don’t “love” is the poor service we typically receive. Would today be different?

It didn’t start off well. Despite there being lots of open tables, we were escorted to a two-top on the aisle in the center of the restaurant. The tables surrounding it were empty. We sat down and immediately felt like we were in the middle of a traffic pattern.

This would not do.

As soon as our server arrived, I politely asked if we could move to a different area. She said she would have to “check” but returned quickly to lead us to a more private table.

353372

Just a couple minutes later I saw that another couple had been seated at the undesirable table.

The man is sitting in the walking aisle.

Our server asked if she could bring us some garlic bread while we looked over the menu. Mom instantly declined the offer since she does not care for garlic bread. As our server departed I wondered if the complimentary focaccia had been replaced by garlic bread.

Then I noticed this.
353374

Seems the garlic bread is not complimentary!

When she returned to take our order, she recommended the Daily Special, shown above. It was essentially a cheese pizza....what we were going to order....with a different type of mozzarella.

For a $13 upcharge!

“We’ll have a large Margherita,” I said. It was already ridiculous to pay $29 for a large cheese pizza; no way was I paying $42.

A few minutes later our server returned to upsell us again. “Are you sure you don’t want garlic bread while you are waiting?”

Yes, WE’RE SURE.

Usually Em and I share an individual pizza. We only order the large when Woody is with us. But Mom and I were hungry, as the next picture can attest.

353376

Didn’t even ask her to pose. She just made the face!

How did we do?

353377

The pizza was delish ~ hot, fresh and char-free. (The last pizza Em and I shared had a blackened bottom crust.)

Then our server surprised us in a good way by presenting Mom with an “Italian cupcake” for her birthday.

353378

So in spite of a few “bumps” our Via Napoli lunch was a winner.

I definitely would prefer your $29 pizza over the special. Hopefully going to try via napoli in November for first time🍕
