Trip Report The GRAND Birthday! *COMPLETED*

“Hey, Ma ~ you’re about to celebrate a BIG birthday. What are you going to do next?”
“I’m going to Disney World!”

If it were only as simple as it sounds in the commercial. But we all know that real life rarely aligns with what is portrayed on TV....or for that matter (dare I say?) social media. My mother was hitting a milestone on 2/1/2019 and I wanted to take her to her favorite vacation destination to celebrate. (The fact that it also happens to be mine was a bonus!) However when I presented the idea to her back in the fall, she was reluctant to accept my offer.

Ten years ago our extended family went to WDW to celebrate her last big birthday. During that trip, paramedics were called because my infant nephew was experiencing breathing difficulties; my sister-in-law got either food poisoning or a bad case of stomach flu which necessitated a doctor coming to her resort room (and an extended stay); and my dear Woody came down with similar symptoms which resulted in an ambulance ride to the ER on the night we arrived home.

Needless to say that was the end of our extended family vacations.

I had to clarify with Mom that I wasn’t planning a big gathering. Still, she wasn’t sure she wanted to go. My father was recovering from some recent health challenges and she was uncertain she’d feel comfortable leaving him. She asked for some time to think it over.

Meanwhile I jumped on some cheap airfare and booked the hotel, figuring it was worth the risk. Just before Thanksgiving, with my dad’s blessing, Mom decided she would like to go.

“Where will we stay?” she asked.
“It’s a big event. Where do you think we should stay?” I answered.
Mom paused and without waiting for her reply I continued: “It’s going to be a grand celebration, so we must stay at the Grand Floridian!”
Mom choked up and said, “I never thought I’d ever be able to stay there.”

Well now she has! And we had a wonderful time at the resort and in the parks. There was even a surprise or two.

As for this:
That's the interesting thing -- something new, fun, or outright bizarre happens on all your trips, and that's what keeps us coming back for more. It's kinda like a written version (with photos), of a Tuvalu WDW reality show. :p Looking forward to the next installment in the series.
Stay tuned for the bizarre!

I wish this trip could have been mother/daughter/granddaughter. Sadly, Em was unable to join us.

Who: Tuvalu and Mom
When: January 29 - February 2, 2019
Where: Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa (the “and Spa” gets me every time!)

(C’mon @amjt660, I know you can compose a great caption for this picture.)
After some consultation with @stephmax975 and @MiniMax we came up with the following runner ups

"Hey look - the new Tangled land in MK is not busy - we will not need a FP for the attraction!!"

"Mom: I keep talking to it but it won't answer
Tu : Mom the talking ones are usually in Tomorrowland"

And the winner

"Quick - take my picture before Danny DeVito goes into the Tangled restroom!!!"

Yay for a perfect Water Pagent View! Sorry your mom didn't get on Slinky Dog Dash but here's hoping she gets another trip and can ride it soon!
While she doesn’t have another trip planned, she joked about returning in 5 years for another milestone when “surely” she would be “worthy” of staying Royal Palm Club at GF. :joyfull:

I might have to try the magic star cocktail when I'm there in July/August. We have an ADR at Mama Melrose...hope our service is better than yours was! That is really sad...especially for your mom's birthday!
Highly recommend the Magical Star....other TS restaurants (besides Mama’s) have it too.
And ❤️ your pic of your Viewmaster reels! You must find the Viewmaster.

a little late but happy birthday!! thanks for sharing this TR! As always more than great to read and watch!
Good to see you back, @FlaggNL 🙂.

Looks like you were getting a lot of Shirley treatment in Magic Kingdom!
Would you expect anything less? 😉😂

Wednesday, con’t

We left the Haunted Mansion (with Ezra and Gus following closely behind 😉) on a mission to find some Pirates. While walking through Frontierland we had a double bear encounter.

First we saw this guy. I think his name is Shaker.

The second wasn’t a bear per se. We noticed a large, burly man coming towards us. He was wearing a shirt that said, I Give Big Hugs. He was by himself and the walkway was fairly empty so he was easy to spot.

He must have seen Mom’s Birthday Button because he called out, “Happy Birthday! You need a hug!” and suddenly he was giving Mom a great big ol’ bear hug!

In any other place but Disney this would have creeped her out but she accepted his affection graciously. He then asked if I wanted a hug. Not wanting to be rude, I said sure. And his shirt was right....he did give big hugs!

“Have a great day!” he wished us as he continued on his way.

More #ShirleyStatus @fractal!

I warned Mom about the camera and she did very well!
352393

We managed to escape the waterfall and ensuing battle without getting wet!

I thought this peg-leg stuffed parrot was cute. (Look closely, it’s hard to see.)

Mom spent some time admiring the items on the Arribas Brothers cart.

Not these! But can you believe that I actually have UNUSED Big Thunder Mountain FPs??!!!

It’s 2019. We scanned our bands. 😊

I am not keeping count of my BTMRR rides this year. But the first was memorable because it was with Mom!
Looks like Mama Tuvalu is having a good time! Time to turn those paper fast passes into a Christmas ornament or something, lol

This year's challenge should be how many different people you can ride BTMMR with, hopefully one ride will be with @Longers . :D

Splash Mountain had a 10 minute standby wait and though Mom adores Splash, she was fearful of getting wet and being cold. The temperature at this point was in the low 50s and it was overcast and gray.

I assured her that the water jets would be turned off, meaning that worst-case we’d get a little splashed but certainly not soaked. She cautiously agreed.

A cast member was handing out Ziploc bags. Aren’t they fun?!
352403

Now to prove to @amjt660 that I know the correct meaning of photobombing ~ check out the man behind Mom.
352404

Pic taken at the beginning of the ride.

Mom told me she always closes her eyes during the big drop.
I encouraged her to keep her eyes open.

She ignored me.
352405

Photobomber’s doing a creepy one-eye thing.

We made out okay. I got a little more splashed than Mom. Photobomber was at it again.
352406

Mom enjoyed the attraction and was glad we rode. I knew she would!

Although we did spend a few minutes in the heated gift store. We both needed a little warmth!

More bear sightings!

We followed Liver Lips McGrowl into the Country Bear Jamboree.
352439

To re-emphasize just how cold it was today, the theater was completely full. Before the show began the senior-aged CM decided to do a little improv.
352440

“Welcome to sunny, warm Florida!” he said, speaking in a folksy tone. “Now don’t you hit me!”

“Why don’t bears like fast food?”
(Pause)
“Because they can’t catch it!”

“What’s a bear with no teeth?”
(Pause)
“A gummy bear!”

“Why did God make only one Yogi Bear?”
(Pause.....and clearly showing his age with this one)
“Well he tried to make a second one but it was a Boo Boo!”

For the unfamiliar:
352443

We were glad when the spotlight shifted to these guys.

Did I sing and stomp and clap my hands?

You betcha!

Because we had already visited the Haunted Mansion, I switched FP #2.

Normally I don’t do spinners. In fact I hadn’t ridden a single Disney spinner until 2015.....the last time I brought Mom to WDW for her birthday.

It was nighttime and there was no wait for Aladdin’s Magic Carpets. Mom pleaded with me to ride.
“I can’t spin,” I protested.
“Sure you can! It’s a wide circumference.”
I hesitated. Then she pulled the trump card.
“But it’s my birthday!”

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I found myself on (in?) a Magic Carpet for the very first time. I managed to avoid dizziness by keeping my eyes focused straight ahead.

(That trick, however, did not work so well with Dumbo.....which she also forced me to ride. Suffice it to say it was also her last Dumbo ride.)

So in remembrance of our inaugural Carpet ride, I booked another.
352444

To be clear, the man behind us is NOT a Photobomber @amjt660.
352445

Ready, set......
352446

....and we’re off! (up?)

As per the image below the circumference is the linear distance around a circle- the diameter is any straight line segment that passes through the centre of the circle
So the spinner had a wide diameter- not circumference
I would also accept a wide radius

( go ahead - keep taking photo bomb shots - I can do this all day!!!)

Wisdom = Riding a spinner before lunch.

Light fixtures for @Doc Disney. (I don’t recall seeing these in your report.)
352453

I love how they look like lighted candlesticks!

We arose when we were summoned: “From the colony of Georgia....”

352454

We were seated in the George Washington room. This prompted Mom to ask our server, “Will George be dining with us today?”
Without missing a beat she replied, “He’s upstairs looking over some papers. I’m sure he’ll stop by if he has a chance.”

Thus began a wonderful session of chit chat we had with our server over the course of our meal. She was the polar opposite of the server at Mama’s ~ efficient, kind-hearted, refilling drinks before they were empty, explaining and recommending dishes on the menu.

To my delight LTT has a new (expanded) à la carte lunch menu. And my go-to Pilgrim’s Feast is back on it!

352455

However I was a little less excited when I saw the on-menu price was $5 higher ($24) than the off-menu price in August ($19).

But I can never resist TURKEY. 🦃
352457

Mom went with the Tavern Pot Roast. Our server said this fork-tender house specialty is a rump cut that is seared, then slow-baked for several hours, then seared again. It is so moist and flavorful that it needs very little gravy.

352456

Woody orders the pot roast all the time but it is usually served with green beans. Mom’s came with roasted root veggies which were delicious. (I never knew I liked parsnips!) All this to say, if roasted root veggies are an option (with the amazing pot roast) the next time I dine at LTT, I might have to give up my turkey.....

We almost cleaned our plates. We had to save some room for Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake!
(WARNING @docdebbi ~ pictures ahead!)
We told our server we were sharing one Ooey Gooey. What we received was the thickest piece of cake (with a very generous scoop of ice cream) that I have ever gotten as a “single” serving.

352458

Methinks she gave us a double portion. 🤗
352460

We did our best!
