Trip Report The GRAND Birthday! *COMPLETED*

“Hey, Ma ~ you’re about to celebrate a BIG birthday. What are you going to do next?”
“I’m going to Disney World!”

If it were only as simple as it sounds in the commercial. But we all know that real life rarely aligns with what is portrayed on TV....or for that matter (dare I say?) social media. My mother was hitting a milestone on 2/1/2019 and I wanted to take her to her favorite vacation destination to celebrate. (The fact that it also happens to be mine was a bonus!) However when I presented the idea to her back in the fall, she was reluctant to accept my offer.

Ten years ago our extended family went to WDW to celebrate her last big birthday. During that trip, paramedics were called because my infant nephew was experiencing breathing difficulties; my sister-in-law got either food poisoning or a bad case of stomach flu which necessitated a doctor coming to her resort room (and an extended stay); and my dear Woody came down with similar symptoms which resulted in an ambulance ride to the ER on the night we arrived home.

Needless to say that was the end of our extended family vacations.

I had to clarify with Mom that I wasn’t planning a big gathering. Still, she wasn’t sure she wanted to go. My father was recovering from some recent health challenges and she was uncertain she’d feel comfortable leaving him. She asked for some time to think it over.

Meanwhile I jumped on some cheap airfare and booked the hotel, figuring it was worth the risk. Just before Thanksgiving, with my dad’s blessing, Mom decided she would like to go.

“Where will we stay?” she asked.
“It’s a big event. Where do you think we should stay?” I answered.
Mom paused and without waiting for her reply I continued: “It’s going to be a grand celebration, so we must stay at the Grand Floridian!”
Mom choked up and said, “I never thought I’d ever be able to stay there.”

Well now she has! And we had a wonderful time at the resort and in the parks. There was even a surprise or two.

As for this:
That's the interesting thing -- something new, fun, or outright bizarre happens on all your trips, and that's what keeps us coming back for more. It's kinda like a written version (with photos), of a Tuvalu WDW reality show. :p Looking forward to the next installment in the series.
Stay tuned for the bizarre!

I wish this trip could have been mother/daughter/granddaughter. Sadly, Em was unable to join us.

Who: Tuvalu and Mom
When: January 29 - February 2, 2019
Where: Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa (the “and Spa” gets me every time!)

Wednesday, January 30

I can’t remember the last time I spent 8 straight hours in the Magic Kingdom and certainly did not expect to do so today. But my Energizer Bunny mama kept going....and going.....and going! (Of course the fact it was a cloudy and cool 55 degrees, rather than a hot and humid 90 degrees, helped!)

I woke early as it was Fastpass day for spring break. Was able to get Slinky Dog and everything else I wanted. I got ready as Mom slept and then stepped onto the patio to greet the morning.

See ya real soon, MK!
351627

Mom was very excited that the GF provides bathrobes in the rooms. It was one less item she had to pack and then she was able to wear one whenever she got cold.

Brekkie time!
351628

We’d picked up a banana chocolate chip muffin last night.

351629

We both like banana bread/muffins, but this thing was NASTY. It was heavily spiced with clove (why?) One bite for me (and one bite for Mom) and it went right into the trash.

Good thing I had this as backup.

Our goal was to get to MK for rope drop.

351637

Not our monorail. (Do you know why?)

351638

This was our monorail.
351639

A downside to boarding the monorail at the GF is that it is almost always full. But Mom and I had pixie dust our entire stay as we always got seats and never had to stand.

She was excited to be here as she was waving to family back home. (I think she thought I was recording, not just taking a picture.)

Mom loves riding in any of the Main Street vehicles. One particularly cold January day she insisted that we ride on top of the double-decker bus. By the time we reached the castle our faces were chapped and our hands frozen. I casually mentioned that memory as we entered Town Square and she cried, “Look there’s the jitney! Let’s get on!”

(Wondering how many of you are thinking, “What’s a jitney?”)

Thankfully there was no upper deck. We climbed aboard. CM Justin (wearing heavy coat and gloves!) was our driver.

We heard a man call out, “Look, we’ve found the Red Light District!” :hilarious:

They put CLOVE spice in a bananna muffin? :jawdrop:

Don't think I've been on the monorail at GF for at least 8 years, but I don't ever remember a crowd. That was one of the nice things about boarding there, but that would have been prior to all the security changes, etc. Also, I think I had stopped over there for lunch, and that's not usually a busy time of day for a resort.

Ah-ha! FINALLY a trip of mine will overlap the infamous @Tuvalu ! I shall be on the lookout with hopes for a sighting and the possibility of obtaining a coveted personalized @Tuvalu collector card! :inlove:
Oooh I hope our paths cross!

I love your mom’s sweatshirt 😀
I found it for her a couple years ago at a store in DHS...thought it was adorbs!

They put CLOVE spice in a bananna muffin? :jawdrop:
I would have been so disappointed with the banana chocolate chip muffin! That sounds divine, then for it to be ruined with cloves! What were they thinking!?! And we will possibly be in Louisville in July. Where can we find these angel dips?
Clove + banana = :hungover:
Angel dips here: https://plehns.com/

Not me....there's a bunch of them around where I work that people use all the time!!
Life in Pittsburgh in the 1940s.....;)

raises hand ME ME ME!!!!
That us an express monorail, which travels the opposite direction and only stops at MK and the TTC! :geek:
One Mickey bar for you!!!!

Berenstain Bears are the BEST!! In fact, Mom just gave me this one for my birthday:

I think the ❤ caught her attention!
Looking forward to reading my collection to Tuvalette & Tuvaleen.

C loves the Berenstein Bears! I'm always on the hunt for new ones for her - they tend to be good stories, while also having good lessons without being too preachy (for example, Santa happened to bring her one about Too Much TV). Our current favorite is when Honey is born, and Sister needs some time to get used to it.

Wednesday, con’t

We disembarked the jitney just in time to catch the Welcome Show on the Castle stage.

352033

Though the show on the train station platform will always be a fond memory, I am glad for this new addition.....something about seeing all these characters at once “opening” the park is exciting for kids of all ages.

And fireworks don’t hurt either. 😉

352034

I mentioned earlier that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is Mom’s favorite Disney movie. It stands to reason then that 7DMT is one of her favorite attractions. Though we had a FP for it later in the week, we hoped for a “bonus” ride at rope drop. We were in a good position on the bridge to Fantasyland and were able to maintain a quick pace.......

.......but this was the end of the line.
352035

There were NOT that many people ahead of us! And it wasn’t an EMM morning. It was as if an alien ship had hovered over and dropped humans into line. I couldn’t believe it.

“I’m not getting in that line,” announced Mom.

Though I was disappointed for her, I breathed a sigh of relief.

Especially since the surrounding area looked like this:
352036

I made my way towards Little Mermaid when I heard Mom call, “Take my picture with him!”

Who knew my mother had the hots for King Triton?

We continued towards “old” Fantasyland (isn’t it time we stop referring to 7DMT, LM, BOG and Enchanted Tales as “New Fantasyland”?) and stopped for pics in front of Beast’s Castle. (You know, the castle that was going to “overpower” and “distract from” Cinderella Castle. 😉)

352053

352052

Again hoping for a Magic Shot....but, no.

As we rounded the corner Mom noticed that another beloved attraction wouldn’t be happening for her today.

352046

We did not want to waste this lower-crowd opportunity on Small World so we bypassed it.

See what I mean by low crowd?

352047

(C’mon @amjt660, I know you can compose a great caption for this picture.)

I captured this guy for you @DisneyGigi!

352048

We stopped in to visit some friendly spooks.

352049

And not one.....
352050

....but two.....
352051

....followed us home!

Yay for a perfect Water Pagent View! Sorry your mom didn't get on Slinky Dog Dash but here's hoping she gets another trip and can ride it soon!
Those Angel treats look and sound delish!! Glad a few made it back for Em and Woody! What a nice low crowd day at MK! Glad you and your mom had a very magical trip!

Mom and her granddaughter have similar tastes in restaurants.

No one rocks a side-pony like Jean.
View attachment 351255

Jean is a longtime fixture at Mama Melrose’s. I was happy to see her tonight.

A different host escorted us to our table ~ where we sat for over 10 minutes (there’s that “time” thing again 😉) before our server came over and acknowledged us. I’d like to say this was her only misstep, but it wasn’t. She was painfully slow in taking our order, refilling our water glasses and put our check on the table without clearing away our plates!

I was looking forward to having the NY strip with the amazing mac and cheese (@LisaBelle). But right away Mom said, “Let’s share something!” and I knew I wouldn’t be having the steak. She’s a big pasta fan. I quickly adjusted my taste buds and let her decide.

But I wasn’t giving up something else I’d been looking forward to.

A Magical Star Cocktail! (@Songbird76 & @figmentfan423)

The glow cube also changed to shades of blue and purple.

The warm, doughy rolls were worth the wait. And I love the olive oil & herbs!
View attachment 351256

I sent the following picture to Em. She instantly replied, “Make sure Gramma gets the yummy Birthday cupcake!”

View attachment 351257

Em noticed Mom’s Birthday Button prominently displayed.
Did our server notice?
If she did, she never said a word. She didn’t even offer dessert before slapping the check wallet down on the table amidst our dirty plates.

Was she ****ed that we shared the Chicken Penne?

View attachment 351259

Who knows? She didn’t even deliver the food to our table. I give kudos to the chef for splitting the entreé in the kitchen, as we each got a bowl like the one pictured above. The pasta was cooked al dente and the wood-grilled chicken was delish! Mom thoroughly enjoyed her meal, as did I.

If only the service wasn’t so lousy.....
I might have to try the magic star cocktail when I'm there in July/August. We have an ADR at Mama Melrose...hope our service is better than yours was! That is really sad...especially for your mom's birthday!!

When I was little I used to love playing with the Viewmaster. It was a hand-me-down toy from my sister but I think it was a hand-me-down toy to her as well. I had a lot of slides but I do remember a Disneyland one, that was my favorite.

I couldn't find the view master...I know it's here somewhere, and I thought it was in DS's room, but I can't find it. I DID find the slides!
I have a Snow White one, Cinderella, Sword in the Stone, Bedknobs and broomsticks, $1,000,000 Duck, one titled "Disneyland" , and then several non-Disney ones....a couple about the Apollo moon landing, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, etc.
