Oh good, another "Let's Bag on SGE" thread.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't get the hatred for this attraction. I went in for the first time last year expected the worst attraction in the world based on all the bile spewed about it on this website. I came out the other end being more than pleasantly surprised at how much more enjoyable it was than the (in my opinion) truly lame Alien Encounter. Maybe it's because I was so disappointed with the Alien-on-a-stick and the non-binaural audio that ANYTHING seemed better than it was. Yes, I liked the preshow, yes I liked the SIR and Skippy show, but the main show itself was, well, boring. I couldn't understand why anyone might think it was at all frightening, just unnecessarily violent. Yes, darkness is scary to small children, so I could understand their fears, but I never particularly felt like any of the effects were believable.
As for children crying, I've been on it five or six times now and I have yet to hear so much as a sob...and I've been listening. I have heard children laughing, saying, "Look, it's Stitch!", and I've even heard one child call it his favorite ride in the Magic Kingdom and couldn't wait to go back and do it again. Yes, there's still darkness, but there's a character kids know and like, so I don't believe the fear factor is anywhere near the same realm as Alien Encounter. I also enjoy the story of Stitch escaping a whole lot more than the "let's see how many characters and audience members we can kill in a seven-minute span of time" show. I will admit some of the jokes are a bit corny, but kids appear to enjoy those. I'll also admit I'm quite taken with the amazing Audio-Animatronics of Stitch and the laser guns. The effects, too, are superb. Oh, and the chili dog smell doesn't bother me (I actually rather like it). I much prefer it to the skunk smells in It's Tough to be a Bug or Journey Into Imagination with Figment.
Sorry, I feel Stitch's Great Escape is an improvement in almost every way over the uber-violent Alien Encounter (which would have fit in better at Disney-MGM). I hope the attraction lasts a few more years...perhaps even with a bit of tweaking here and there. I wouldn't be against them making it even more kid-friendly.
