The Flu 😷

Good Morning:) The reports on the news, from my Husband that works in a hospital and various Disney Groups on FB have me super nrevous.
My family of 8 leaves next week. Currently we are all healthy. We did not receive the flu shot and it seems like a it’s not working anyway. Our 13yo had what we suspect of the flu right after Christmas, we treated the symptoms, keep in contact with our Pediatrician and he slept. Per advice from our Pediatrician we are taking Elderberry and Pro Biotics (the later we all ready.) I also purchased the Purell Professional Spray that kills the flu and norovirus In 30secs.
My question for all of you that visit the parks regularly and live locally, is the flu in the area widespread? Are the parks full of flu stricken people?
Am I just being an over worried Mom?

Not a big fan of the shot based on this year's success, but if your gonna get it, any theme park is the perfect incubator.
I don't think the flu , in any form is different now than what it was in the middle-ages (1950's-excluding 1918),
only now you get bombarded on a daily, if not top-of-the-hourly news story that makes you want to play Trivial Pursuit
with George Costanza (It was the MOOPS)

Go, have fun. Chances are better you'll get sick from being on a plane!
Oh, and listen to Dr. Goldblum!

It is an individual decision.. which is why we’ll see so many cases of the flu every year. Because people don’t want to get a tiny shot.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand the anti-vaccination mindset, so I’ll stop there.
Don't you watch The X-Files?

I think the vaccine takes a while to kick in. Someone suggested u get the vaccine, which I am not disagreeing with, but it is a little late for protection on this trip.

Here's input from another doctor who's promoting a nutritional method of bolstering your immune system to fight the flu...

It can take 1-2 weeks to fully kick in. That doesn't mean it won't start providing partial protection or reduce the severity of a flu during that window. Don't forget, the trip home is still two weeks away. What if the flu-carrier is on that plane?

Don't delay, get the flu vaccine. (And if you haven't already, the 10-20 year pneumonia vaccine.)

We are at Disney now. Nothing out of the ordinary that I’ve seen- kids coughing but it’s winter and the weather has been up and down. I have noticed that many snack stations have hand sanitizer machines you can use.

When I went in Aug-Sep those were everywhere, so I don't think that has to do with flu season, though.

People also should know the flu shot doesn't make you invulnerable to the flu. There are so many strains of the flu that it is impossible for a shot to keep you safe from all of them. I believe the flu shot makes you 30% less likely to getting the flu. So there's still a good chance you can catch it even with the shot. But the shot is still a lot better than nothing.

Biggest ways to prevent it are washing hands often and thoroughly, wearing a mask whenever possible, plenty of sleep, eating healthy, being active and fit and getting enough of your necessary vitamins. Oh and drinking tons of water. Your body works a lot more efficiently when it is getting well hydrated.

Here's the thing about flu -the associated serious complications are a result of the immune response. As someone who suffers autoimmune disease, I can tell you that the best thing you can do to maintain a healthy and balanced immune system, is maintaining/improving gut health.

Guys, if you get sick, please go to the doctor immediately. Please don't hesitate. :( Regardless if you got a Superman like immune system, if you catch the flu, seek medical attention promptly.

Just got word that another school has closed nearby due to the flu outbreak.

To add to the OPs distress my wife and daughter were diagnosed and are currently suffering from the flu (Strain A) this week. We were at Disney last weekend (before symptoms emerged). We live approximately a 30 minute drive-time away, and my daughters private school has been shut down for the next 2 days because of the recent flu outbreak in our area. Enjoy your trip:)

Its the flu people, not the Bubonic Plague

Agreed, while the flu is a terrible thing to catch, I am not temporarily moving out of my home while my family is contagious. Do not get me wrong, I do not want the flu, and I have washed my hands so much they are cracking, but this too shall pass.

People are losing friends and loved ones in a season of increased frequency and severity. Although most who get it will emerge unscathed after several days of misery, the very real potential for serious complication *should* discourage us all from taking a pointedly blase attitude. It might not be you today, but tomorrow . . .

"Paramedics said her 6-year-old had common flu symptoms and left, she claims. Now her daughter is dead."
