The local homeless in my area panhandle in their respective traffic light intersections , return the shopping carts at Aldi for quarters and live in makeshift camps behind the shopping center. For restroom and shower facilities they use the 24/7 Planet Fitness gym where they pay in cash 1 year in advance. Gym membership is $10 per month.

What the heck is this about? Your quote of @Figgy1 was gone, this just seems so random. More random than normal.

DIY is the way to go to save $$. At the local Honda dealer , service charges $100 to replace the cabin air filter located behind the glove compartment. It takes literally less than 60 seconds to DIY. The cabin filter I buy from Honda parts at the dealer for $30. Honda charges $70 labor to do a job that takes less than 1 minute. Dealers make their bread and butter revenue from servicing cars.
Yup, I did the cabin filter that same time I did that engine air filter and saved over $200.00 by doing it myself. Those opportunities are harder to come by the more they complicated the vehicles. I also replaced my wiper blades at the same time all of which I ordered from Amazon. The order was big enough that I didn't pay any shipping but if they did try to I could have gotten all those items at Walmart for about the same price. I know that many are afraid to do anything on a car, I know some that won't even add windshield washer fluid, but there are a few things, like these, that are on YouTube with very clear directions on how to do it. I ended up paying about $75 total, the other $200. would have been labor.

The other image that came to mind, directly thereafter, was the relative sparsity of my folks 1970 Chevy Camper Special engine compartment (internet image, but looks pretty exact)…like night and day… :cyclops:
Progress…???!!!!! 🤔;):)

Funny thing is, that basic engine got us everyplace that complex one does. I didn't like changing plugs, points, rotor and condenser every 20 or 30K but at least they were straight forward but did require a few specialty things (like a timing light and feeler gauges) to do a tune up in your own driveway or garage.

10pm…?! :cyclops:
We had to be in bed by 9p on school nights.
No computers, obviously, but if TV time (only 5 channels) woulda’ ever been taken away, we’d a’ just gone outside and played. But, also, I don’t remember us committing a serious enough offense for that to ever happen…!!!!! 🤔🤷‍♂️:hilarious:
I found that the more kids you had the more likely it was that your parents wanted you to be outside for as long as possible. Also if memory serves me right every child also had different bedtimes from the one before. Social changes over time, I guess.

Indeed…!!! :)
And, oh yea, I remember those tuneups, before electronic ignitions and all…!!!!! :hilarious:
I wonder who else here even knows what a timing light or feeler gauge is, without having to Google…?!!!!! 🤔😅;):)

Just look at what you can see and repair on that engine. Radiator and hose, alternator, air filter unit, carburetor, distributor cap, spark plug wires to the spark plug locations, valve covers, heads, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, fan belt, brake master cylinder, steering column, heater fan and part of the block and more. What do you see on that new engine? Who the hell knows, but hopefully it's something important.

Somehow I missed this post…

I’ve noticed the transition of cost of parts v labor over the decades. Parts used to be the main cost, not the labor. Parts are crazy-expensive now too, but it’s the labor that’s the real killer. And, again, among other factors, we all mostly know why…..
