DIY is the way to go to save $$. At the local Honda dealer , service charges $100 to replace the cabin air filter located behind the glove compartment. It takes literally less than 60 seconds to DIY. The cabin filter I buy from Honda parts at the dealer for $30. Honda charges $70 labor to do a job that takes less than 1 minute. Dealers make their bread and butter revenue from servicing cars.
I’ve done much DIY on vehicles over the years.
Back in the day, I pulled into a 7-11 parking lot as my ‘71 Olds Cutlass was overheating. Upper radiator hose had about a half inch split in it about an inch from the radiator end.
There happened to be an auto parts store across the street, but when I got back to my car, I realized my tools were at home. However, I had some change in my pocket and ended up using a dime to loosen and tighten the hose clamps…!!!!!
Another time, I replaced a block-mounted fuel pump on a ‘78 Buick Regal in an office parking lot.
Also replaced the starter on our ‘90 Jeep Cherokee Laredo (didn’t even hafta’ Jack it up for that ).
Myself and my BIL replaced a water pump on his ‘81 Chevy Chevette. Had to go through the timing chain for that one, and BIL was really just another set of hands, as he had not much of a clue what was going on…!!!!!
The most DIY I ever did was help my youngest bro rebuild the engine for his ‘76 Pontiac LeMans…quite the learning experience there…!!!
I’m leaving stuff out, but beyond the above, tons of DIY oil changes, brake pad replacements, etc., etc., etc.
I always get my brake pads from AutoZone, because they have a lifetime warranty, and we tend to drive our vehicles ‘til they drop.
After the first set wore out, I’d just bring in the old set and they’d give me a new one…rinse and repeat…!!!
Good times…!!!!!
