I teach at an independent school... this year we hit 55,000 for 7th grade. Great school and philosophy, it’s hard to justify and rationalize the cost for average people but the kids are around professionals in their field. It’s the type of school that exposes them to a myriad of educational and professional opportunities that otherwise aren’t available in the public system... and that’s saying a lot considering we have some of the best public schools in the Us here in Massachusetts. Schools in this league are Ivy League factories. Of course, we could argue all day whether that is truly a measure of “success”. I see points on both sides. However, with all that said I love what I do... it’s an amazing community, we are well supported in what we do and offer, and the kids are genuinely great.

Wow. One of the reasons I moved to where I am now is because I didn’t want to pay $30somethingthousand for elementary and high school per year, and I didn’t like the cheaper options there.

I’m still trying to not get annoyed by a high school tuition that will be half that amount.lol

The bus drivers are shared...move from school to school. High Schoolers walk in at 7am....Middle Schoolers walk in at 8am.....Elementary Kids walk in at 9am. Not likely to change. ☺
9am?! What time do they get out of school?

We don’t have bus service, I would be completely screwed if my kid started school at 9am.

Do the busses pick up all of the kids no matter where they live? Even if within 2 miles of the school?

Yes, in my town every child is welcome to be on a bus. If you are 0.3 miles away from the school that's fine. No restrictions for living close or far from the school. My school dismisses at 3:25ish. Buses are on the move (once things become routine) at 3:40pm. I live 5 minutes from my school so I am home by 3:55pm if I choose to be.☺

Weren't you there for the last hurricane? It seems Disney might have learned a lesson after that last one. I still remember those awful wonder bread "sandwich" boxes they were not only giving out, but charging for.
That was the hurricane just prior to Irma We were at the Wilderness Lodge main building for Irma and they had chefs overnighted for the duration just like we had this time. I credit Disney for stepping it up with both Irma and this one big time. Food has been wonderful and cheap. Fortunately for both staying at deluxe resorts

We were very pleased with this attraction too. I know some people have dismissed it or say it isn't great if you aren't the pilot but I have enjoyed every ride I've taken. Engineer and pilot are my favorite positions, gunner was okay. Have you been able to ride in all positions yet?

Went to T’s school for a curriculum meeting tonight. Foreign language is not the only thing that will change for T.. and a lot of it sounds quite positive!

They have a new STEM lab.. it’s AMAZING. Complete with 4 3D printers as well!

The 4th grade teachers are now on the ‘minimal homework’ wagon. Math facts and reading are required every night, but the rest of it will be confined to reports or studying for a test.

For LA- Apparently ‘silent reading’ during class time is “better” than reading aloud, so, they’ll be doing that more often during class.. and then discuss what they read, with a quiz to follow.
Also, the class will vote on one of 3 books per week, that way they have a say in what they’re reading.
Will have 8 writing assignments per semester.

Math- No common core. Instead, the teacher will go around the room and let the kids explain how they solved the problem. Allowing them to each find what best fits each individual.
They will be divided into groups by math skills.. and groups can change.. i.e if someone is having more trouble with fractions/decimals, but excelling at division, they can regroup at appropriate times.

One weird thing- They have removed the requirement to have all state capitals memorized. I don’t know how I feel about that. Instead, they’re concentrating on the different regions of the US, going into more detail on the States and major cities within each region.
Right now they’re on the Great Lakes and surrounding states.
I think it’s a bit strange to not test on/require memorization of the capitals, has anyone else heard of this?

They will focus on economics and entrepreneurship a lot this year, culminating in a fair where they have to conceptualize, design, and make a product, then create a booth to present and sell said product.

All in all it’s not as scary as I was anticipating! Sounds like it’s going to be a great year. I’m excited, T is excited, we’re both impressed with his teachers.. so maybe this won’t be as stressful as everyone made it sound!

🤞
This actually all sounds great. My kids use duolingo for foreign language. It is a free program and they use it on their ipads. You can always do that for T.
I don’t remember needing to memorize state capitals in school, I somehow just learned them. :hilarious: There is a song for learning the state capitals on youtube. My kids each did a geography/history program similar to what T will do. I got a curriculum that separated the country by region, and then we studied each i individual state. They did a mini report on each one. There even were recipes for a famous dish from each state that you could make. It was a fun program. We also watched “How the States Got Their Shapes.” Its a fun series. I bought the DVD set. I also bought a board game “Postcards from America.” They actually played it the other day. Check it out.
Good luck to T this year! I know he will do great!

That was usually what happened to us when doing single rider, because they are called at the end. Same when the cons call for a party of two in the regular line. Really it is how they stack the cards or hand them out but pilot is usually first on the stack. One time as a single rider I was assigned gunner. I don’t mind any position though though, I just like to ride.

Actually... no

There is no bargain in education. It’s not like Harvard is 70K and some other lesser prestigious private college is 20. Even state schools have “low” tuition then slam kids with fees that double and triple the tuition. The issue is that top schools don’t award merit based aid, if that were the case 99% of the school would be getting something.

The debt issue lies with kids who shouldn’t be in college... attending small private schools that don’t really make you a competitive candidate in a cut throat economy. Better schools mean better alumni networks that open more doors... of course, much of this has to be combined with your drive and level of ambition.
No, the debt issue lies with children who had the misfortune to not be born into a rich family. That was what I was saying. These kids that are taking advantage of the family wealth maybe dumber then a bucket of rocks, but they can buy their way to success. Who knows might even become president someday. I believe that the "higher end" schools do provide a good education, however, they provide it to kids that already have an enormous leg up on others strictly by their already established wealth.

Oh I will check put that game, thanks!

T did the Little Passports USA edition in 2nd grade, I think I might have to renew my subscription.

I’m a bit nervous about the lack of homework assignments, although I heard 4 th grade was homework hell, so that’s a positive.. I guess I’ll put my trust in the “experts” and hope the kids still learn just as much this way.
