Thanks for the explanation (I understood most of it).
But the other reason for the "love" is that you got to drive in a Pace Car???!!!! So jelly!!!! (Or, was the above the actual pace car you drove, or were you saying that you drove the same model/year, etc., car as NASCAR used for a pace car?)
Yep, the overall concept is quite simple...
The more fuel/air mixture you can stuff into the combustion chamber the bigger "boom" you're gonna' get, thus more power.
But, the quality of the engine parts better be up to snuff to take the extra power, or your gonna' run into serious problems...kinda' like strappin' an Estes rocket to a balsa wood toy plane...!!!!!
Hahaaa...!!!!!
Nope, not one of the original 3 specialty-built/modified Pace Cars from the '79 Indy 500 , but, I wish...!!!
Jackie Stewart drove the actual Pace Car to start the race that year...!!! 🏎
The one I drove was one of the ones sold to the public, and was for sale by owner back in '86. I was thinking about buying it, but, ultimately, it just didn't have the oomph I was lookin' for. Also, as I posted, it was the turbocharged version, so it was the 2.3L 4cyl., instead of the normally-aspirated 5.0L V-8 with more torque and horsepower. The 3 original Pace Cars had the 5.0L and were even more mechanically modified than what was offered to the public.
Ford made about 6,000 of the 2.3L and about 4,500 of the 5.0L.
