This reminds me a little bit of when one of Boston's major departments stores, Jordan Marsh, was converted to a Macy's. Some of the best things that made JM unique, were discontinued when Macy's came into town. One item that people used to love were the Jordan Marsh blueberry muffins. I'm telling you, there was a cult following for these delectable muffins, made right there in the store! :hungry: It was odd that a department store could have such a successful in-house bakery, but people would go to the store just to buy their muffins.

Of course, back years ago, the downtown area was bustling with many large department stores, as well as interesting smaller shops along the streets. Everyone went downtown to shop. Now, in the downtown area, there is only Macy's. Gone are the stores that offered different shopping experiences: Woolworths, Filene's, Gilchrists, Raymonds and Jordan Marsh. I may like the Macy's in New York City, where it originated, but I don't like what they did to JM in Boston. I never shop downtown anymore.

I live near Minneapolis and the big department store downtown, used to be Dayton's then Marshall Field's and now Macy's, used to have a unique Christmas display. There was a huge walk through display of a fairytale or story on one of the top floors and it was different every year. When it was bought out by Macy's they kept the display but now have the same one every year. It just gets boring and it seems like the crowd lessens every year. I liked having a unique experience every year.

So I made a reservation for Ohana. I know, I know it is most of the time not worth the money but it's my son's favorite hotel restaurant and it will be just me and him at that part of the trip because my daughter has to go home. What do you guys think? Is it a good idea?

I love Ohana. It has good days and bad days. I went a couple times in a row and it was great, then I went and it was terrible. I said I would skip it the next time but hubby wanted to go and we did, and it was great again. I went probably about 5 more times and this last time while it wasn't terrible it was a little disappointing. I didn't go this time on my solo trip but we will give it another go the next time hubby and I go. If it is disappointing again then maybe I won't love it so much.

Bingo. You know exactly what I was expressing as well, and I've heard similar types of stories over the years from other people, who lived in other large cities. Once a cookie cutter approach happens, all the uniqueness and fun flies out the window. I think probably the last bastion of really nice department stores is in MIdtown Manhattan. Every year they still put up extraordinary and expensive, window displays for the Christmas season. I am heartened to know that this effort still exists somewhere in this country.

Never been there

Can't eat 75% of the stuff on the menu.

Unless you have food allergies, it's fine.

I learned the hard way that if you have food allergies, family style is not a good idea! When I did the Luau, had to fill up on salad and ranch dressing.

I prefer Kona for this reason

Yes, that cookie cutter approach only goes so far. While I appreciate that Macy's has kept the Christmas display going, they could change it up occasionally! My husband's family lives near Chicago so we when we see them around Christmas we go downtown and wander around. And the Macy's on State Street has kept doing the window displays which is nice but they didn't seem as extravagant this year and similar to last years too.

See that's the thing. You never know if it will be good or not. We have a 6:25 reservation so we should be sat around 8 but maybe we will enjoy it. Didn't they bring back the chicken wings that they previously took off the menu?

Well, I know that the Mexican coke has a large following.
I mean, I see in the forums how much they like the sugar cane taste than the dustroxe one.

perhaps there is a market for the candy that has sugar cane?

Yes there is a following and I love any soda with sugar cane over corn syrup. Still the overwhelming majority of Coke sold in US is corn syrup. Now back a couple years ago Mexico switched to corn syrup for distribution within Mexico.
Coke that was exported from Mexico into the US still had sugar cane though. If that is still the practice over the last year...don't know.

We've been 3 times and have really enjoyed it every time. However, the last time was in June of '13, and there have been some changes since. Still, even then, I don't think I've seen anybody post that it's now bad.
We'll go back again to see for ourselves on our next trip.
Whenever that'll be...

I will dig out some pictures on Sunday and post them. I'm going out of town again this weekend, meeting up with old college roommates this time, and why not do it now? Because I'm too lazy to get off the recliner again!

I'm not quite sure of the biological reasons, I'm pretty sure it was poo though.

Yep, chlorine could be off, those bio reasons or protein spills general reasons why pools get closed.
