Wish me luck I'm officially a home school mom and James' schedule which he picked out all by himself looks like a tiger mom picked it out. Honors math and science with computer tech and science as his electives. BTW does anybody speak Japanese? That was his language choice. He may wind up living in my basement if I don't have a nervous breakdown first
Really? Welcome to the club. :)

It was a productive day we went to the farm market(cornered the market on peppers again I swear we never have enough), got the fabric for the Harry Potter robes at 70% off:inlove:, Target run, Walmart, Wegman's, Aldi's and got James set up for his classes. I may have a smallish glass of wine tonight:angelic:
Joanne's? They had some good coupons. We went Thursday and bought yards of material. Oldest is now making scrunchies with bows. She plans on selling them at a craft fair for kids next Saturday.

Why did he decide to do his classes at home? Is it online through the district? Homeschooling is so popular where I live now that the district actually just started its own online school. I am guessing all through webcams in the classes. A lot of the homework is sent online anyway. I guess it is a natural progression. We still choose our own curriculum although some classes are computer based through private companies.

It's not through the district. It was suggested to him by the school so he could take extra credits. Doing it this way he won't lose an hour on the bus each way

He must love school. That is great. Nice to have a motivated kid. :) 2 hours of travel time each way is crazy. When my kids were in public, I would drive and pick them up. They were done with their homework before the other neighborhood kids got dropped off.

How will he get evaluated for his school work? We see a district approved evaluator every year. We have to have portfolio put together of samples of schoolwork done through the year. We used to have to bring the portfolios into the superintendents office after the evaluation passing letter as well, but that was done away with 2 years ago. It was deemed that the evaluators opinion was good enough, since they were approved to be evaluators by the district. That plus the superintendents office was overwhelmed with portfolios. We dropped off our homeschool plans for the year with the evaluator letter in June. We only got our homeschool approval for a new year earlier this week. We had already started school when we got it. They are just overrun now with homeschoolers.

His tests will be done online and submitted to the district. He'll aslo have to show up for state testing. I'm sure I'm going to love this:angelic:

We got a new law in Georgia that not only makes it illegal to text and drive, but they now added talking and driving. Yay! You can also get a ticket for having a phone in your lap, even if you aren't using it. Additionally, the law allows you to be ticketed for eating while driving if the police officer thinks your eating is a distraction. You can have a mounted phone, but there are rules for that also.
You are not even allowed to use your phone at a red light. You must pull off to a parking area.
There was no grace period for the new law in my city. I am curious about how many people they have ticketed.

Glad to hear that Georgia passed that law. I think there are 16 states with similar laws now. In MA, advocates for safety have been pushing for this for years (to date, the only clear distinction is for drivers under 18, who can be pulled over for either talking on the phone or texting while driving).

Apparently the roadblock (so to speak) is the possibility about racial profiling--pulling over someone on a phone, as an excuse to just pull them over. So the proposed bill always gets stuck in the Legislature. Sad, because all they'd have to do is just amend the proposed bill, keeping the "hands free" aspect. If that got passed, then the profiling issue wouldn't happen--as no one would be seen holding a phone while driving. It wouldn't be ideal, but certainly better than what we (don't) have now.

Yikes...so sorry. That's why Maryland has a law that you can't use your phone while driving unless it's hands free or you are completely stopped.

My great uncle is actually going through a case right now because he was hit by a car in a parking lot. I don't know the details, but he was seriously hurt, not able to work for weeks, etc. The good thing is that he lives in PA, but this happened in MD, so my dad is handling his case. Much to everyone's relief.

People are just idiots.

First of all, sorry to hear about your great uncle. Poor man, I hope he's healing and getting better every day. Also, it's comforting to know that your dad is handling his case. The whole thing is just mind-boggling.

Why am I not surprised that you picked up a big challenge like this -- in addition to all the other stuff you do??!

:hilarious:
