For goodness sakes....it's so much cheaper to just use Lyft if you're going that short distance. My parents discovered it this trip. We've been using it to get to water parks and between hotels. They love it.

We have ended up using Uber and Lyft a lot on our last couple trips. It isn't very expensive and sometimes it is just easier, especially when going from resort to resort. I can imagine it would be more convenient for water parks too. We used the Minnie van service 2 times on this last trip and my husband really liked them, I thought they were fine but I had a hard time paying $25 for a ride when a regular Uber/Lyft was half that cost.

My husband was very leery of using Uber and Lyft, he had concerns about safety. But I used Uber for my solo trip in California and since I used it unharmed I guess he decided it was safe. :D

In other news..

Cant believe how full of crooks banks are in my country.

Mom got victim of a fraud, where a young kid trained in "fast hands" took her card and replaced it with another, then went to an expending spree of 2,000 USD worth of stuff AND a Mac computer.

We called first the bank, and told us that we had to make an official report to apply the card shield who supposedly has a stupidly low 500 USD protection and refused to protect the rest. Despite the card being reported as robbed in a mere pair of hours after it was taken.
Then they gave us a list of things "to do" to be able to get that "protection" (which is not instant and requires making the police report..etc..etc..)

Since my mom as bronchitis, I had to do everything myself and go to the bank for her. They were VERY UNHELPFUL.

My mom then decided to do her best effort and called the government line of credit card protections. and turns out that making the report to the bank with their instructions actually prevents the investigation office of the government (which handles the consumer protection of banks, credit cards, etcs..) leaving you at the whim of the Bank and "their investigation" (aka dirty instructions so you only get the crappy 500 USD protection and not the full protection they were supposed to give, which is 100% protection on the next 48 hours as per federal rules).
These instructions were on purpose so the victim actually loses the money and the bank gets away with no paying anything they should.

These things are even more sketchy since my mom's debit card supposedly had a maximum buy and retire per day limit of 350 USD, yet the thiefs removed and buy more than 2,000 USD in Mexican Pesos!.
Second, my mom's card is supposed to send SMS and calls for anything "suspicious". They DIDN'T send anything at all.
So either the thief was extremely well trained to fool protections, or he had help from bank operatives (which happens).

Worst of all, this happened in another state.. which means my mom has to travel (look how stupidly dumb the laws are..) to make the report IN PERSON.. and hope for the best.
Sorry. That really is awful. When my card was getting charged like mad, I was never notified of any suspicious activity. Turned out, it was because the thief set up on line banking, so all alerts went to a bogus email. That took precedence over anything I had legitimately set up. You might want to check and make sure there wasn't any online banking shenanigans.

He knows nothing about any of the resorts. I picked Royal Pacific because it has the Polynesian theme, and I told him that, so now he says "Oh, well, so you're staying at a Polynesian hotel. Bucket list item crossed off." I've never seen the Royal Pacific though...or ANY universal resorts actually. I just read the description and chose that one. Maybe it will be nicer than the Poly....I have no idea. I hope so.

The unofficial guide for 2019 isn't out yet...I looked months ago and it comes out the end of this month. I'll be buying a copy for my brother and one for myself.
I have a crazy idea but it may just work. Seeing you have a PITA stay at Endless Summer(UNI) for your off days. Make PITA take a taxi (seeing he's unwilling to use any other service) to UNI to pick up the rental there while you and your kids enjoy some resort time until he picks you up. That way you can return the car at UNI not having to pay for days you're not using it. That may work out being the cheapest way to go and you don't have to deal with the car rental. what about doing arrival night?

We eventually decided to start a drive back, up 52 along the Ohio River. We wanted to stop at a few Underground Railroad sites, but it was too late at that point.

So we drove, and drove, and drove on a small two lane road thru Scioto County.. I was deathly afraid of dear, we were still in a forest, so I drove super slow. We didn’t pass much of anything for an hour.. then saw a creepy graveyard and Chapel. Had to stop.. but using my iPhone, the photos didn’t come out too well.

Then came upon their “downtown”. More creepy beauty. It’s really sad.

Found an OPEN gas station!! Stoped to get snacks, drinks, and stretch. We were next to a creepy motel.. surprisingly, all of the motels has many cars in their parking lots.

Stretching our legs.

When I see towns like that, I wonder what they were like in their heyday.

...and then T fell asleep. I made our way back home. This was one of the best days of my life!!! Exploring completely new places, walking across 100+ year old covered bridges, getting lost, no cell service, no itinerary, meeting locals.. seeing a sad and glorious beauty throughout all of it. We’ll be back to visit a few of the river towns during daylight! :)
This sounded like a really fantastic day! Thank you for sharing all the pictures and the commentary.:)

Gosh, Cesar, that is awful. Just wondering if you've also checked any online message boards, etc., for how others down there have dealt with similar problems. (Sometimes attorneys may even share information online to help others.) It certainly seems like you've done everything you could possibly do to try and fix the problem. Sad for both your mom and you. :(

(Just a random thought for the future--could she maybe get two accounts--one that is NOT tied into any sort of bank debit or credit card, and one that is tied to a card (with a much smaller balance--for when she needs to use it for certain purchases). That way, she'd always still have money in the non-card account, if heaven forbid, this type of situation ever happened again.)
She has 6 accounts, the problem is that the money she needed was in THAT debit card. She was robbed by a tempered ATM machine and a "helpful young man" (which was the one who modified the machine in the first place).

Still furious how they somehow managed to skip all the security measures and were allowed to purchase IN STORES without checking the signatures. And how they somehow removed the limit locks that were in place.

That is awful! I'm so sorry that happened to her. It does sound sketchy, but there's probably not a whole lot you can do about it? Would the bank manager be able to look into it and fix it, or was that the person you talked to?
Bank managers do not care, they are bound by the bank policies. Infact they get punished if they help "too much".
Hence the weird policy of only 10,000 insurance that was actually a trap.

Nope, it was a physical one.

But I will talk with her, because considering how gullible she can be.. She might have even used the same password on the online service AND her debit card.

I was a bit worried about safety myself, but I figure if my worry wort of a father thinks it's fine, it's probably fine. I figure most of these drivers are just trying to make a living. I just take precautions, like not riding up front and keeping my phone out during the ride.
