I got put in the outfield because I could run and catch. Both some of the boys and some of the girls could hit the ball really well. Besides didn't you like running and sit ups?
Wait . . . you had co-ed gym class? Talk about a progressive school--our school's gym classes were always separate.
Anyway, I never minded things like calisthenics (we hardly ever did those). And we had a few brief weeks of gymnastics which I really liked (balance beam in particular). But the gym teacher wasn't a fan of gymnastics, and we'd always end up back on the field, or on the basketball court. She wasn't happy unless she was yelling at kids for messing up a play on the field, etc. She lived for competition--and winning. Often thought that she was some sort of frustrated athlete who didn't quite make the cut--and ended up a frustrated gym teacher.
Oh, I had my shtick down: softball -- stand in the outer field and pretend to look interested, and basketball -- I'd run a little bit on the outside of the group, to make it look like I was actively participating. All in all, I gave a command performances in gym class, as the gym teacher never caught on. (I don't think I held a basketball once in all my high school years. And I never was able to hit a softball the very few times I ever got up to bat.)
