I got put in the outfield because I could run and catch. Both some of the boys and some of the girls could hit the ball really well. Besides didn't you like running and sit ups?

Wait . . . you had co-ed gym class? Talk about a progressive school--our school's gym classes were always separate.

Anyway, I never minded things like calisthenics (we hardly ever did those). And we had a few brief weeks of gymnastics which I really liked (balance beam in particular). But the gym teacher wasn't a fan of gymnastics, and we'd always end up back on the field, or on the basketball court. She wasn't happy unless she was yelling at kids for messing up a play on the field, etc. She lived for competition--and winning. Often thought that she was some sort of frustrated athlete who didn't quite make the cut--and ended up a frustrated gym teacher.

Oh, I had my shtick down: softball -- stand in the outer field and pretend to look interested, and basketball -- I'd run a little bit on the outside of the group, to make it look like I was actively participating. All in all, I gave a command performances in gym class, as the gym teacher never caught on. (I don't think I held a basketball once in all my high school years. And I never was able to hit a softball the very few times I ever got up to bat.) :hilarious:

Yup by law. We were grouped by physical abilities but co-ed. Next thing you're going to tell me your little league teams weren't. I didn't do that because it would have cut into scouting but the teams were mixed.

Crazy how it’s like a different world in Southeast Ohio.. yet only a few hours away. We went to Portsmouth and then a scenic, very long, way back to explore some river towns.

I have so many photos.. so I’ll try to pick my faves.. I’m a city/beach girl.. this stuff was fascinating to me.. there was areas where I didn’t have any phone service, drove an hour without seeing a gas station.. never saw any retail stores besides a Dollar General or Family Dollar.. no fast food or chain restaurants thru most of it.

Favorite part- all of the veggie stands.. on an honor system!! I’ve never heard of anything like that before.

Enjoying all the photos. I love country pictures. Your photos remind me of many places I've seen here in New England, particularly up in NH, Vermont and Maine. Once you get off the main highways and drive along the secondary routes, that's where you see all this neat stuff. And as for the honor system at the roadside farm stands, that's something that still goes on. Some will have a locked cash box, but many still have a jar or box and most people are honest.

DH is driving me nuts!! We have such different planning styles. The Harry Potter package JUST opened up for 2019 dates on the Universal site...I've been keeping an eye out, because that's the one we wanted to do. So I checked today, and it was up. So I price it out, send it to DH and tell him what it includes, and tell him we need to figure out what dates exactly we want. And now our whole plan is wonky again. He doesn't want to splurge on staying at the Poly, even for a night, and he thinks there's got to be a way to get Magical express to the airport without having a flight so we can rent a car there instead of at Disney, so we wouldn't need to go back to Disney after Universal Studios.
And he doesn't think the photo package is worth it for the HP package, so we're not doing the HP package. And he doesn't want to pay much for a hotel between our Disney and Universal stays...we're taking a few rest days. So now he's looking at cheap hotels. Last time he did this, we ended up in the carp hotel in Cologne. But this will be 4 nights instead of just one, and if the place he picks isn't decent, there won't be anything else available last minute, so we'll be stuck there.
The thing about hubby is that he has a really high IQ...he's very smart and logical. But he's also much more of an "efficiency" planner, where I'm more emotionally motivated...I choose things because they MEAN something to me, or because I want a certain experience. HE chooses things because of how inexpensive and convenient they are. So now my carefully researched and thought out plan to cover all the bases has been thrown into the wind in favor of saving some extra money. But at what emotional cost? We PROMISED the kids we were going to stay at the Poly for one night....now he's decided that staying at Universal's version of the Poly is an acceptable replacement. So now -I- get to tell the kids in the morning that we don't get to do that after all. I think I might actually make HIM break that promise himself. It's his decision, he can deal with the consequences.

I can't give you much advice about Universal, but in your post you mentioned Magical Express back to the airport without a flight? So are you thinking of doing this..... staying at WDW ====Magical Express to the airport====then renting a car and doing Universal? That would work, you tell Disney what your flight times and dates are so as long as it is real flight that you tell them it is fine. So just pick a flight (to wherever) that fits the time you would want to go to the airport and it is all okay. Renting a car at Disney isn't much of a hassle, we have rented from Alamo at the Dolphin and from Dollar at the Wydham in Disney Springs (totally walkable from the Springs). Alamo also runs the car care center and they will pick you up at your hotel, but if you don't plan on returning to Disney make sure you schedule the return to the airport.

As for the Poly.....isn't it your dream resort? And if I remember correctly wasn't this trip supposed to be from the money YOU inherited from your father's estate when he passed? If you are using that money from your father you deserve to splurge on the resort you want. Especially if you are only wanting one night there. It seems to me that he could be a little more flexible to you wants too. But that is just my opinion. I say book what you want and he is lucky to come along with you and the kids. (Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I feel for all the work you have done.)

What about getting the rental as @ajrwdwgirl said and have the rental company P/U from POLY then DME to the airport for the flight home

A little update on my weekend with my niece, who is 13 years old.

I picked her up on Thursday and we took her to dinner to the bar in our town. She loves their food and it was taco 🌮 night and she loves tacos. After dinner we just hung out and had an early night.

Friday morning we all got up early and headed to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. We wanted to beat the heat and the crowds. She loves the Arboretum almost as much as we do. We even took her on the bog walk.

A few Arboretum pictures.

At the Arboretum we wandered through the many gardens including the rose gardens, the Japanese garden, and the Chinese garden. Early on we didn’t see many other people which was a major benefit of going so early in the day by the time we left it was getting more crowded. For lunch we stopped at Portillos, I have included my meatball sub, brad got the beef sandwich and my niece got chicken parmigiana.

Friday finished up with our towns festival’s horseparade, takeout Chinese (we picked it up after Portillos), and the movie Eddie the Eagle.

Saturday morning was a lazy morning with pancakes and bacon. Then we went down to Main Street to check out what was going on for the festival. We looked at crafts, voted on a pickle making contest, votes on the quilts in the quilt show, and ate some
Good BBQ chicken. We also played Bingo and I won two tens of dollars ($20)! That night we watched the tractor parade, cooked pizza at home. Oh she also made banana cream pies for our church for the pie and ice cream social the next day. While she did that I premade sloppy joes and Mac and cheese for Sunday lunch, I let her help with the Mac and cheese. Then she picked the movie for the night, it was Sound of Music and our town also had fireworks that night and we just had to walk to the end of the block to watch.

Sunday was the main parade that we watched with her parents and some friends of mine. Hubs had to be in the parade but joined us for dessert later. It was a good but busy weekend. We also played a lot of Skip-bo (it’s a card game.).

In this stack is a winning board!

Hubs float, notice his shirt it is a Frontierland one. The theme of the parade was western.

Your pictures are beautiful! And Portillo's. Sounds like a great time.
