Please understand that I am not making light of your cousins situation. I am just making an observation. Exercise is a major roadblock to good health. I walked into my office area one day a number of years back and found one of my co-workers with a gigantic cast on her leg and on crutches. Not 5 minutes later we got a phone call telling us that our boss was in the hospital with broken ribs and punctured lung. Both, had happened while skiing. The first was a nasty fall and the second was when a tree apparently jumped out in front of him while he was headed down a major slope. Tiger woods has spent years healing from various knee and back injuries all related to a sporting exercise. There are way to many examples existing that show the folly of exercise. Sonny Bono comes to mind. So I will die out of shape, but, with a lot fewer last days to healing from sporting injuries.

Exercise isn’t the problem (unless you don’t stretch, a hard learned lesson that my stubborn kid is finally realizing, thru pain, now. Sometimes mom’s are correct. ;) )

Sports can cause a lot of injuries, especially in previous generations. Ski, bike, skate, etc accidents will always happen..as will any physical collision injury, but the many surgeries from over use should be seeing a downtown. Especially in baseball.

It’s such a catch 22. My dad was a college athlete, played in competitive leagues well into his 40s, coached and played with us growing up.. but now he has a difficult time walking and is in pain 100% of the time. I’ve lost count of how many surgeries he’s had. Off the top of my head - rotator cuff, more shoulder issues, elbow, femur bone, knees, hips.
His experiences, along with mine and my siblings injuries, are what prompted my sister to go into orthopedics.

My sister has also had more surgeries than I can count.. metal in her wrist, 5 metatarsals shattered in her right foot, now replaced with metal..weekly air shots into her muscles.. but she’s still running marathons, tough mudders, multi day runs, and playing soccer. She knows that she will be in pain someday, but it’s going to happen regardless at this point.. so she decided to keep doing what she loves.

In contrast though, myself, my mom, and my brother in law were/are athletes as well. My bro-in-law played college football, still playing in a very competitive softball league, and marathons, tough mudders, iron man, and soccer... all 3 of us combined have had less injuries than my dad and my sister.
Strange how it seems to happen to some more than others.

I’ve luckily never had a bad ski accident, but I was one and done after getting hurt the first time I tried snowboarding 😂. I was way too overconfident, thought I could take on a big hill because I ski and surf.. NOPE. I spent the rest of the trip off the slopes. :(

Ive been rotating between Oral B and Phillips for years.. but this the first time I’ve had a toothbrush with an iPhone app :cautious:

My hygienist is so excited about my 2 purchases., she said “I’m going to text you in 3 days to check in, and hear how much you love them!” I’ve seriously never heard someone rave about a toothbrush and air floss so much, she needs to be on a commercial 🤣

Pretty much the same argument that is used about guns. Guns are not dangerous unless they get in the wrong hands and accidents happen. In the case of guns, I don't own one so I will never have to worry about accidentally killing myself with my gun. If I don't exercise or do any heavy activity sports, I will not injure myself exercising or doing those sports. Simple, but, highly effective way to prevent pain and suffering. Something else may get me, but, it won't be from over exertion. Under, but not over. With under at least we have a good reason. Everyone can be sad and say..."if only he had exercised more".

I do think it’s a positive that society and medical professionals are realizing past harm. They’ve cracked down on youth sports a lot. No headballs til U13 in soccer, strict pitch counts in baseball, a plethora of new football rules/studies/new equipment. I think we should see less sports injuries overall.

You’re totally correct though, avoidance is the only way to guarantee no (sports) injuries/required surgeries whatsoever.

T was having horrible pain behind his knees.. I was worried, had him checked out., his hamstrings were soooooo tight. It’s his fault because for some odd reason, he hates stretching, always says “it’s a waste of time”. So now he’s had physical therapy for the past couple of weeks, and finally realizes the importance of stretching.
He’s lucky that an injury didn’t result from this, I think he knows now that it can and will, if he doesn’t commit to daily stretches.

Tbh though, I had to google the new(ish) dynamic stretches.. we now do FIFA 11+ daily, along with my old school stretches including bands as well. The PT had me buy a board for specific hamstring stretches for T.. it has helped a lot. The 11+ warmup makes so much more sense than what we did when I was growing up. Wish we had it back then. “They” say it has reduced injuries by 30-40%.

@StarWarsGirl has impressed me for years here, with her computer skills and overall intelligence.

Just wanted to make a general comment about women and aspiration goals. In my thinking, this current generation is not "better" than, but "equal" to the women of the past. The subjects of the goals may update a bit from generation to generation. However, aspiring to attain (a variety) of personal goals hasn't really changed--even if more career opportunities have opened up nowadays, in a more gender-neutral playing field.

(I realize you're also aware of the above, but I just had to put in a good word for my mother and grandmothers, and those before them, who accomplished great things, despite not being rocket scientists!) :)

Opportunities are far more plentiful to pursue. Woman also are not let go when pregnant and there is leave with job security. Daycares. So many more choices with support from laws that allow women in volume to aspire to be more. College admission for certain fields is now wide open. Gone are token woman becoming doctors etc.

I completely agree for the most part. However, I do think that Pregnancy/motherhood is still one of the larger hurdles and biggest decisions for women, when it’s the right time in their career. (Imo) I don’t know if that will ever change... but it has gotten a heck of a lot better.

@MinnieM123 , I missed your post and have no idea where to find it on these pages, but I want to say that I agree women have always had goals, even if different goals. My mom left her career, as a secretary, to become a stay at home with me, her first child, and never went back to (paid) work. She had and achieved so many other goals though, and I respect her more than I could ever put into words.
I think the main difference between now and then is that women have the CHOICE to stay home or have a career, including careers where they’re now the one’s with an admin assistant..women now have any opportunity that a man has, and guidance counselors/teachers/society showing them that they can do anything they want to do, including being a SAHM or an admin assistant, but not restricted to it. :)

Ha ha, could be! I’ve seen it the last few times I’ve checked out.. I needed new brush heads for my toothbrush, so inquired about that system and if it’s really worth the upgrade.. omg her face lit up when I asked, and she was so animated and excited when talking about it. 😂😂😂😂. I can’t even describe it, had to keep myself from laughing.
