Go to the beaches anywhere in Maine and you develop a resistance to cold water. My kids would play in the ocean until their lips literally turned blue and they just stood there and shivered. We had to pay attention because they wouldn't come out unless we told them to. I blame it on the lowered body temperature not allowing enough warm blood to get to the brain. They build us tough over here![]()
Of all the days that I went to Maine, I can remember only once when the water was warm enough to actually submerge ones body completely. The day before I could barely walk in the surf without freezing, then suddenly the next day it was almost like bath water. A native told me that it was because on that day the gulf stream came closer to the shore and warmed up the water a little. I'll take their word for it. I know I spent a lot more time in the water that day. If I remember correctly that was a 4th of July weekend.
