imho, its the reflection. like fishes, they think there is no barrier and what they see is more space.Yeah, birds are not that bright. I assisted in many necropsies especially swans. Their brains are itsy bitsy.
The estimate of birds flying into glass and buildings is 300 million to a billion a year.
plus their cone of views put their frontbeak area in their "almost zero vision".
