My FIL slipped on ice and bled badly in the brain. The neurosurgeon before they took him in for surgery about midnight said it wasn't good, likely he would not make it given his age, 77 or if he did chances are he'd be completely paralyzed. My DH was still asleep and I woke up and called the nurses station basically to see if he was still with us and she informed me he woke up a few hours ago and requested a cheeseburger and was sitting up eating it.

Over the next week I discovered he was totally without memory and didn't know who we were. I talked to the doctor and he said sure he does, he called me by name. I explained my MIL was helping him telling FIL who everyone was as she saw them coming so nobody would find out his memory was gone. His memory came back but has no recollection of being in the hospital. He lived another 10 years and walked with a cane because one leg didn't totally come back.
