In some ways, I wonder how much these Pixar sequels are targeted towards the kids so much as they are targeted to adults and the kids who grew up with Cars that are now adults. I think I was probably more excited for Finding Dory than any kid in my extended family was. I have probably also seen it more times than the kids in my extended family. Which really should not be discussed because it's kind of shameful.
I think the same thing applies with Cars. The kids that were into the first movie are now teens and young adults. To a certain extent, I think that they are targeting Cars 3 more to that group.
But then again, Disney films have always had some darkness in them. I mean, for goodness sake, in Pinocchio, the boys are turned into donkeys and then Pinocchio and Geppeto get swallowed by a whale. I remember Sleeping Beauty and Hunchback of Notre Dame being intense when I was a kid. And Pink Elephants on parade...
As I told a coworker - it's not a Disney movie unless someone dies
