I've thought about writing a letter to our county about the difference in my health between high school and college. I missed enough days senior year that if I did not have a federal form 504, I would have failed. Now I'm in college, in a fully air conditioned school that has some buildings that are even older than the ones in high school, and I rarely miss class time. I rarely see my allergist anymore. I'm almost never sick. That's not a coincidence.

I'd like to ask our superintendant why he thinks providing students with iPads is more important than giving them clean, air conditioned schools.

It is probably cheaper to get students iPads than to replace the HVAC system. There are a lot of technology grants around for schools that make it free or practically free to put iPads and laptops into schools. Technology is the future and tax payers like the free grants. Upgrading systems like air conditioning are sometimes seen as non-essential, and if it costs tax payers money they don't like it.

Our elementary only got the system because the roof of the elementary was leaking and beyond basic repairs. It was a bit of a struggle to get the referendum to pass, and it didn't pass by much. One of the sticking points was the air conditioning, people didn't see the need after all they didn't need it in school so why get it now!? It isn't a good mentality for the tax payers to have but it is what it is. Our school got "lucky" in a way because this major repair was scheduled right about the time the recession hit at its height and contractors were scrambling for jobs so the project came in way under budget and the district was able to put the extra money into other much needed projects. Unfortunately adding AC to the High School/Middle School didn't fall into that budget. Maybe our roof will start leaking beyond repair someday....:cautious::confused:

All this talk about dogs and ice cream lead me to buy my pup a treat at the grocery store today. I was going to get her a small pint of vanilla but then I saw this....

So soon Kapono will have a ice cream treat all her own. (I also got her a doughnut for breakfast tomorrow, although she will only get 1/4 of it.)

Responding again regarding toll roads.
They are only a recent thing (about 15 years or so...I think?) in Central Texas. I have yet to drive on one. I refuse. Fortunately, there are none even near my commute to work.
With the way the hills are, it's unlikely they will build more major highways in these parts of town. But, they have also been known to add toll lanes to existing highways.
There is a highway just to the west of Austin proper that they are doing this to that is beyond a quagmire. It is so beyond over budget and delayed that it's a local joke...beyond stupid, on top of stupid, with extra stupid sauce. Yet, some people's pockets are being lined. Yes, I'm ****ed.

"Stupid sauce" :hilarious:

When I went to Europe, I notified my credit card people that I was going there and the time frame I would be there, so I had no problem with that, but, I remember back a few years ago I had a $3500.00 repair bill for my car when I was in Florida. (lived in Vermont at the time) Not a call, not a concern from them.... nothing. Then a few months ago I tried to charge a shipping fee for $4.95 and they refused to allow it, notified me and told me if it was legit, just to try it again. Even if someone else had charged that $4.95 I doubt I would have really cared.

As to the second part of your post, even little oddball $4.95 charges can (sometimes) raise a flag, because hackers often start with a few very small charges; and once those go through, then they blitz purchases until the card gets shut down on them. (As for the first part of your post, that was crazy that a 3500, out-of-state charge didn't seem to raise an eyebrow.)

On an unrelated note, I now have three 3 week old kittens in the house. Looks like Mama abandoned them. 1 black and 2 dark gray tigers. 2 seem to be doing ok for now, worried about the runt tiger - it had wandered out of the barn into the rain. It doesn't want to eat, but I'm trying to save it.

It really does make you stop and wonder what their priorities are. Certainly, students can still get a good education without an iPad. I also realize that we need to keep up with the times in terms of technology, etc., but I'm not so sure that an iPad would be a major deal-breaker here. I'd much prefer that the students learn in a healthy building environment.

The whole thing was weird. The item was a gift from JetBlue for completing a survey, but, I had to pay for the freight. OK, it was pretty cheap. Then the CC company refused to honor it and sent me an e-mail telling me to resubmit if I felt it was legitimate. By that time, I had decided that I really didn't want the item so I just didn't redo the request. Two days later I get a call from the originating company asking for me to resubmit. At that time I said, no, I had changed my mind and no longer wanted the item. They said OK and that she would make a note in my account about it. Another two days goes by and I get another call from them (different person) asking me if I was going to authorize this charge. I replied that I already spoke with someone about that and had decided I didn't want the item. They said... oh, yea I see that on your record now. Sorry to have bothered you. Jump ahead about two weeks and I received a package in the mail and it was the item in question. I then checked my CC account and not only had I been charged the shipping cost, but, $95.00 for the actual item. I contacted my CC and objected to the charge with an explanation of what happened and they said they would investigate it. A week later, the entire amount was deducted from my CC billing.

Moral of the story... pay attention to your statements. I know so many that never take CC payment receipts and never check them out against their bill. It's easy to spot when you are the only one charging on the account, but, if a couple uses the same card it is easy for something to slip by if you don't have receipts.

Wow! What a story. And like yourself, I watch my statements like a hawk.

Ivory Tower Squabble EST 2011. WINDMILL SURVIVOR
So I am prone to whacky dreams to night terrors. The night before last was so strange.

The dream took place in our hotel room and had water about an inch come up the floor drain in the very large room in the areas where there was laminated wood flooring that was peeling and stuck to the bottoms of my DD new gym shoes. Knock on door and I open it and in comes Jesse Jackson with a book and his breakfast plate from the free breakfast served downstair and he walks through the water to the table and sits himself down while trying to chat and eat his breakfast. I asked him what the heck he was doing....it is Sunday, it is a day of fellowship so I picked your room. Ultimately I told him to pick up his stuff-You need to LEAVE-NOW. He did while protesting about the Lord and the need for Fellowship.
I had a friend that worked at a bank back in the mid 80's. At the time, she told me that all cash transactions would be a thing of the past in about 5 years (1990-ish).
I have yet to run into a place anywhere that doesn't accept cash, but, I have been to places where their credit card machine is down and the only thing they can do are cash transactions. Fortunately, they all had ATMs...! ;)

Some exits and tollways in Illinois only take Ipass. You have 7 days to pay online if you don't have one.
