Okay so the severance check has been deposited into my account. Most people would not think it is a significant amount, but it is the most money I have ever had in my bank account in my entire life. You guys know me - I don't care - I post anything - but they made me sign this like 12 page confidentiality agreement, so I just can't say. But let's just say that it is more than enough for a Disney trip with a bunch left over. My strategy is to take Phil on a trip anywhere he wants to go to butter him up,and then tell him that I've booked a Disney trip and he can come or not come. I'm considering Food and Wine, but I'm also wondering if I should just wait until Avatar Land opens. Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.
Don't wait, and don't butter. Book it. If he wants to go, great, if not, there is always wine country. Oh, is there enough to do wine country in Napa, maybe a beach day, and end up at Disneyland? Maybe that can be a compromise? But, if you have your heart set on Disney, and you can afford it, go. Just go.

Ok kids, I have a conundrum for you. I got an email from my principal looking for teacher to attend a 2 day technology training at the start of August. I kind of want to go because it looks interesting but I'm unsure if I want to give up 2 full summer days for it. I have already spent the last two days working on curriculum for the new class I have to teach this year and there is still a lot more to do for that......What to do?:bored:
I guess it depends. Do you think it's the most valuable way of spending your time? Is there a direct benefit to you going that would better help you to teach? Or are you better off taking time now because you'll have no free time once school starts? Is there another faculty member who might benefit more from it than you would? Are you already technically-savvy, or do you not even think about how you can incorporate technology into your classes?

Maybe the answers to those questions will help you decide. :)

That was the summer I moved to Chicago, and nutso might be conservative. So far, I have seen real feel of 109 for Friday. No AC in the car, so I think I am just going to hibernate that day. Of course, I am assuming that ComEd is calling off the maintenance work that is supposed to have my neighborhood's power shut down from 9 am to 1 pm.

That was a horrible heat wave. We had a huge birthday party for my son that Sunday when it finally ended. My house was packed with people and the central air was no longer keeping up, plus we knew the doors would be opening and closing frequently. Should have just rescheduled it. We went to Sam's Club the day before and bought a window A/C unit and threw it in the window of the the livingroom that opened up to the other rooms of the house. Boy did that help. Over the years we've tossed that unit in a few times, might again.

But anywho about 7pm it was time for presents and I had gone outside to toss some stuff and the temps dropped like 30 degrees from the time the party started. I came in, announced we were going outside to open presents. About 35 people wanted to kill me, not knowing the nutzo weather had broken. As they all filed outdoors with a poor attitude everyone became so joyful. They stayed a lot longer just being able to be outdoors again. Never forgot that moment from family and friends all at one time wanting to harm me though, pretty funny.

My DDs car does not have A/C. I'm doing my best to pull my act together to give her mine for Thursday Friday.

No, no extra money. The district only pays for the cost for us to go, so we basically volunteer for those 2 days.

Blah! Me<<<<<<< that should be stipended. We do. We have new hire committees and some curriculum teams that meet and they get a lump sum stipended. I would not encourage working for free, teachers and support staff do enough of that as it is. Again me, if they wish to have a training like that and don't want to pay during the summer they should sign staff up for inservice type trainings during the school year and hire a substitute for the days staff is attending. Our teachers union would have our heads if we tried to do this, rightfully so IMO. :cautious:

Thanks, those are very good questions. Thanks to you all for playing devil's advocate for me.

Our wonderful governor made it so the unions don't have any power for negotiation or really anything any more. And I agree there should be some sort of stipend, but yet I'm still thinking about it. I'll decide tomorrow, after all tomorrow is another day!

I love peaches. It's my favorite fruit of all time. When I was a kid, there was an ice cream place that had an absolutely wonderful peach sundae. They served it with whipped cream, of course, and Nabisco Sugar Wafers. What ever happened to those. Yummy. My mouth is watering now.

Yep, same here. Luvs me some peaches! :hungry:
Along with many wineries, the Fredericksburg area here in Central Texas is well-known for it's delicious peaches...! :)

I like warm weather, hate snow. Still there is warm, hot and then nutso. In about a week they say we will likely hit the nutso. It has been many years since we went through days of nutso with high dew points and temps of 106. I think Chicago lost apx 700 people in a matter of a few days. I hope the weather peeps are wrong.

Currently 89 here with a heat index of 96.
Only got up to 98 here today.
Much cooler than summers here over the last several years. Those had many days of consistent temps above 102, and as high as 112, static air temp.
Don't remember what all the heat indecies were, but, I do remember seeing one area on a local weather site a coupla' years ago where it was 121.

Yesterday, I wanted to do something, so I asked my brother if he wanted to go see Pets or BFG. He said no to both. Maybe he's getting to the age where, other than Pixar films, he'd rather watch the "adultier" movies, I guess. I asked him if he'd rather go bowling, so that's what we did. We got the unlimited two hour bowling. We ended up playing five games of bowling. Five. I couldn't feel it until I was walking upstairs. Then I felt it. :in pain:

They bring their fury and desperation from where they come from.
I mean, they contribute to their own fury by refusing to stop at red lights, wrong turns, rude, throw trash..etc..
I'm so sorry that people come and trash your beautiful country. As I have said before, we felt so welcome in your country, and enjoyed the entertainers at the restaurant we visited. Great food and drinks. Plus the kindness we felt we are planning to come back.

You are only young once, go for the extra vacation....or you are building your career, work hard to reap rewards. I suggest you think about the alternatives, and do what works for you...relaxation, or goals. Remember life is short, I can't give you any advice, but go with your heart. Good luck on your decision.
