Ivory Tower Squabble EST 2011. WINDMILL SURVIVOR
When I was teaching, we rotated duties. Sometimes you'd have lunchroom duty, sometimes playground, sometimes bus duty. And teachers took their own kids on field trips. I subbed for a class once before I actually started my own position and there was a field trip to the planetarium that day, so I had to take the kids on the field trip. But I agree with you on overnights...no thank you!! But, our district had a policy that teachers could not share rooms with students. Our speech coach always had her own room. She pennied and taped us in our rooms. (you can stick a penny in the door crack that falls if the door is opened...you can't put it in from the inside and it's hard to get out without opening the door. So she could tell if we had been out of the room. She also put a piece of tape across the door and frame so when the door opened, the tape would be broken or it would peel off on one side, and you couldn't replace it from the inside. There was only one time that a couple of girls broke the rule because some boys from another school took the penny out of the door. The girls figured they could just get them to put the penny back in and the coach would never know...but she memorized how she put the penny in...which way it faced, etc. So she could still tell. If you HAVE to do overnights, I guess there are ways to ensure the kids behave. Those girls got kicked off the speech team.)
When our students go to WDC for the week there is always a security guard in the hallway. He and the lead teacher go around and tape
(it is a special tear away tape) all the student doors. The students are shown what happens if they open the door to the safety seal. Adults get their own rooms. No adults would go if they had to share a room with kids and any adult that wanted to would certainly raise an eyebrow.
