No alligator warnings, just no swimming , please. The polite language to me could signal they don't want you in the water, not there are alligator's swimming there and it's a danger. I do know about alligator's as we have vacationed in Florida, for many years. I did hear that Disney, used to go out and catch alligator's and large snakes. Looks like the population has risen so quickly, they need more help catching these creature's. They do have a pass from Fish and Wildlife to catch and kill. Florida through conservation, has had to live with the fact they are everywhere now. In the early 70's the gators were almost extinct, and that's why you could swim at Disney lake beach's. Now the state is over run with them. But, I've gone for years, and I've never seen one on property. Sister and husband saw an alligator sleeping in the shade at the resort at Coronado Springs.
Yeah, I wouldn't have gotten from that sign that it was dangerous to be in the water. And I remember a long time ago...I don't remember which trip it was, probably the one when I was about 9. But I remember taking the ferry across to the entrance and they had characters out on the water, waterskiing....I remember Goofy. So knowing that people had been in the water, I wouldn't have imagined there would be gators in it. Disney just seems like a magical place where nothing bad can happen...almost like a different realm. Call me disillusioned now! It's heartbreaking that this happened, but I'm glad I know now that I can't take it for granted that it's safe because it's Disney. I read that the found the boy now. :(

its Florida. And also the news said there were warnings. I've seen a few round WDW. (wild life warnings and stuff)
I've never seen warnings about wildlife there. Granted, I've only been there a few times, and I've never stayed on property before. But Florida or not, Disney seems isolated from the rest of Florida...like....there's Florida and then there's Disney. And Disney is this bubble where nothing from the outside can get in.

Thank you all for all your kind thoughts, wishes and sympathy. Your kindness is appreciated. :inlove:

While I was prepared for this as one can be, boy oh boy I wasn't prepared for all the stuff that
has to get done, answered, supplied and arranged.
Overwhelming, isn't it? Make sure to take breaks every once in a while. It's not good to be constantly immersed in all of that. You still need to eat and sleep and take a breather now and then.

Do you remember what day of the week it was and around what time of day? I really want to see them, and I want to hear THAT song, because they always ask you to cheer for your state and in all the youtube videos, they always say they've never had anyone from Wyoming. When I was a kid, on our first trip to Epcot we heard them sing, and they did that song and actually stopped the song to come over to talk to us because they had never had anyone from Wyoming before. I'd love to represent Wyoming again.
They perform daily in the afternoon. Sets are 45 minutes apart

Last trip we saw one a very small on while driving onto property. We always also see a few in the canals at KSC(even saw a few while they were considered endangered there). Disney is in a swamp in Florida just sayin be careful.

You were lucky that your parents were aware of possible danger, and not letting you or your sister swim in a lake in central Florida. You see, I never heard of anything like that until about 12 or so years ago. Found out when I took a taxi from Daytona down to my hotel at WDW. The driver was great to talk to during the ride.

At one point in the conversation, he was talking about some tourists he saw that were wading in shallow water by a creek, and couldn't understand how stupid they were to do that, with the possibility of gators around. I was embarrassed to tell him that I didn't know that, myself. I explained I came from up North, and knew how to act around moose, bear, snakes, fox, and other critters, but we didn't have any gators. So I think about people who visit WDW from other states or other countries, and might not know about the danger. A sign that says, "No Swimming" may not get the "real" message across. The only thing I know is that I'd never go near their water down there, but more because of the brain-eating amoeba that are sometimes in water in hot areas, and are very dangerous.

My parents last night said that 'we used to let you guys go in shallow water as kids in Disney. We never thought about gators.' This was Caribbean Back back in the late 80s/early 90s and probably a couple other resorts too.

That's when you could go in the water.

May I also extend my sincere condolences to you, Gabe, and to your family. "Been there" myself in the past, and eventually you'll get through those details that follow, as you mentioned above. I am very sorry for your loss.
