But aboriginal people don't want to be called Americans or Canadians. They have their own nations that they belong to like the Cree Nations, the Ojibway, the Maliseet, the Huron, etc. I think that's why native has gone out of style. Many don't acknowledge boundaries and systems like countries imposed by white Europeans.

(Sorry, I have spent a lot of time focused on aboriginal studies and have spent a good deal of time with First Nations people.)

No apologies necessary. I think we all value a good education here. :bookworm:

My husband chaperoned a mission trip for church to South Dakota on a Sioux reservation, and the tribal elder said that they hate being called Native Americans. The elder said they like being called Indians, he said that anyone born in the US could be considered native american. So I guess it varies from place to place and people to people.

And that's what it comes down to, right? Calling people what it is they want to be called. Honouring the stories that they want honoured.

That's concerning that only 11 parents showed up. I don't have children, but if I did, I would just assume that meeting and talking to the child's teacher, would be very important.

I went to my son's meet the teacher night in September. He is in first grade and I was shocked how few parents showed up. You would think they wouldn't have given up caring already. But then again, maybe they all had to work or couldn't find a babysitter as you aren't supposed to take your kids.
