Feeling silly.

A bunch of schools in my city were in lockdown this morning. The police were trying to find a suspect who was spotted outside the high school caring a gun in a soft case. When I heard about this, I went and got my son from his school because it made me feel better to have him home with me. Throughout the day, more and more schools went on lockdown or were secured as the police kept looking. We decided to take a drive to a city an hour away when I heard the police scanner say they were searching a couple of streets over from our house. They finally apprehended the suspect and he was carrying an odd umbrella in a case. . . .

I guess I can go home now. *embarassed*
We went on lock down my second semester here. We received a text saying, "Active shooter on campus; shelter in place." I was in accounting that day, and we read the text to the professor, who says, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" and then tried to continue teaching. Meanwhile, none of us were focused and ended up gathering by the windows watching the police come. We were evacuated by SWAT team. Since I was a commuter and my car was right in the lot, I was able to leave. I got off campus and pulled over. My parents were at O's opening day that day, and I couldn't reach them (it took about four hours to reach them). I called my aunt and started crying. She calmed me down over the phone so I was able to drive home. I called a couple of my relatives, who had likely seen it on the news, my bestie's mother, who had already heard and was texting me, and a leader from my religious group so that everyone knew I was fine, since no one knew what was going on at the time.

We found out later that it was someone shooting a BB gun in the woods. Students who later were expelled.

In the world that we live in, where school shootings are more and more common, you really can't be too careful.

I still think "natives" doesnt sound as rude as "aboriginal" or similar.
Aboriginal usually sounds like someone who has no education, no culture and live pretty wild.

Maybe it depends where you are from and how the word was used. First Nations people used to be called "Indians" here which was not only culturally incorrect but has been used in a derogatory way. Some people say native and I think that's fine but officially it is aboriginal, which is what the First Nations have asked to be called. There's nothing wrong with the word. It just means the first inhabitants of a place. It is important to them that it is emphasized that they were, in fact, here before Europeans or anyone else.

but chinese is a nationality.
not a description of someone who has lived in the area.
Aboriginal and Indians are usually words used by imperial groups when they define the natives in a bad way (uncultured..savage..etc..)

Aboriginal is not an imperial world. Indians and savages yes...and highly offence words. Imperialists would never have used aboriginal because they would then have to had acknowledged that the land belonged to them first.

And don't forget the part about how it also sounds like completely abnormal humans that are not up to standards. Native American keeps them in the group with the rest of the people and merely says... "We were here first." Any other way just smacks of separating groups of people from what the PC people consider normal.

But aboriginal people don't want to be called Americans or Canadians. They have their own nations that they belong to like the Cree Nation, the Ojibway, the Maliseet, the Huron, etc. I think that's why native has gone out of style. Many don't acknowledge boundaries and systems like countries imposed by white Europeans.

(Sorry, I have spent a lot of time focused on aboriginal studies and have spent a good deal of time with First Nations people.)

Expecting a high of 50 today, and first freeze warnings for tonight. And where will I be? Last home football game, walking across the field with my senior, trying to not start crying. And after, trying to warm up in the band hall, and trying to keep it together during his senior speech. This senior year stuff is starting to get too real.
The best of times and the worst of times. Good luck tonight.

Yea, but being called Chinese means that you are just from another country. Native Americans are not in the real sense of the word nor are they different from any other american, be they from Canada or the U.S. They just were the ones that tied up the "explorers" boats when they landed.

Sorry...that's not right. They consider themselves to be from nations that are distinct from Canada or America. That's why they have their own systems of government.

I'm the opposite. Regis irked me but Michael's a hoot. I think it's from seeing him on so many other programs. The man does stay busy.

I like them both. I do think Regis' time was up though. You could pretty much predict what he was going to say in the end. The change was welcome in this case. I find Michael to be as interesting as they will let hosts be on that show.

What great photos. Love the Main Street ones. I swear I could spend a day just in that part of the park. I just love the theming.

I appreciate seeing more from Pecos too. Am looking forward to trying it.
