In my generation it was the evil television set that labeled Moms as not paying enough attention to their kids, now it is social media. When I was raising my kids it was those video games that had people saying we were not paying enough attention to our kids. Or I'm missing it where I live? I just passed our town gazebo packed with parents taking pictures of their kids as they were going off to Homecoming, our swim meets were packed with parents and I can just remember the amount of parents volunteering at concession stands to support their kids band and sporting events. We had booster clubs, PTO's, parent coaches for soccer, baseball etc before highschool and parents came to those events. I think we are often just seeing a small snippet of Mom's and their days with their children. Often when someone would see me playing with my phone it actually had something to do with my kids. It was a real juggling act to pull off all we did in a day.

Guess that is why I hate broad statements especially when they single out the Mom. I wonder how many of us on this particular social media sight are parents? I'd like to think even though we play on here we are not labeled as parents that don't pay enough attention to their kids or are self-absorbed.
I see what you're saying here. I tend to find a lot of comments like these made by "experts" on tv have no children. As a single mom, I find my time on here as a way to wind down.

Hi all, we had a good flight got to see a lightening strike just beyond our plane, wish I had my camera out. Got in to art of animation, at 5 pm, after leaving at 6:45 AM. Long day we ate dinner at Landscape of Flavors. Pictures of dinnerView attachment 114125

I wrapped up potatoes and put them out on my cast iron in line gas grill to make baked potatoes for dinner. I put them out there so when I came back from the store all I had to do on my way in was turn the ****. Being a rule follower I always lift the heavy lid when igniting the BBQ. Good thing. Somehow stupid squirrel got in there and was chewing through a potato.

That would have been nasty.:hungover:
My uncle would make squrrel stew quite often when we were younger. Not to sound cliche but it does taste like chicken.

After working all week long, I also like my little weekend traditions like going to the donut shop on Sat. and Sunday mornings. Like most people, I also battle calories, but I don't want to be miserable and not have any treats. So I came to a compromise recently--Saturday and Sunday I'll still go to the donut shop, but I only get one donut on Saturday. I cut it in half and wrap the other half. On Sunday, I take the extra half donut with me, and I just order coffee, only, on Sunday. At least I still have 1/2 a donut for each of the two mornings with coffee, so I don't feel deprived.

I like how you take the dog and she gets a new toy!

Wow I admire your willpower to only eat half the donut! Maybe I will start trying that to save some calories. I thought I was doing good with only one donut for each day!:)

You doggie is so cute! And, I love your painted chairs!! Those are so festive!

Thanks for both compliments. I can only take credit for the chairs though.

As for my dog being cute, they other day on a walk we passed our school's cross country team and a few of my 8th grade girls. So a couple days later I mentioned something in class about my dog and on of the girls blurted out, "She's is so adorable!". I should have corrected her for blurting out but it was funny. The rest of the class then wanted to see the adorable dog so I had to show a couple pictures. Not exactly science related, well I guess talking about animals is science right?!!

Jack's record on destroying a new dog toy was 15 seconds!! :hilarious: We always try to find really tough, strong toys as he's a monster (and proud of his destruction . . .). :p

I've bought Kapono the expensive tough toys too. She finds a way to destroy them, in just a tiny bit longer time than the cheap ones. The first "tough" toy we bought her she destroyed in less than 15 minutes. So I find buying the cheap toys is just as cost effective. Sometimes I will let her play then take it away for awhile, then give it back later in the day, I find it makes the toy last a little longer. The dog that passed away in January he rarely destroyed his toys, he loved them but he was a gentle player and had buckets of toys until we got Kapono and she started slowly destroying them.

Wow! You painted those yourself? I just assumed you bought them. Yikes, you're talented!! :jawdrop:

I "borrowed" a few things from school to help me. I made overhead transparencies of the designs I like and then brought those and the overhead projector home for a weekend and traced the designs. I had to improvise/freehand on a couple pictures but most of it was traced.

I think a lot of the negativity comes from people who don't have kids themselves and who live under the assumption that children must be supervised every second of the day and raised military fashion. People who HAVE kids are less likely to judge, because we know that it's ok to let them be independent sometimes...in fact, it's our job to raise them to BE independent because we won't always be there to do everything for them, and if they don't learn to make a sandwich, or to get dressed, or to do their homework, they're going to be in trouble when they get older and the world expects them to be functioning adults. BUT, there are some people who really don't pay attention to their kids at all and the kids have to raise themselves. My nephew complains all the time that his mom only plays on the computer all day and won't do anything with him. He comes home from school and she takes him to her parents and that's it. So I get that there are some who fit the stereotype, but I think that's a minority...it's just that those are the visible ones.

I'm not alone:joyfull: 16 hours for us
My family drove everywhere when I was a kid. We drove to Illinois in 2 days about every other year and we drove to DisneyWorld one year....it took us 3 days driving from about 6 am to 5 p.m. We also drove to New York when I was singing in Carnegie with my choir. And I was too young to remember it, but we drove to California to Disney when I was a year old. We always did stuff along the way...like, when we drove to Florida, we stopped in...I want to say Kentucky, and went to a cave there...and somewhere the Louis and Clark had traveled, and I think there was a trapping museum there. And I remember staying overnight in Hays Kansas and we went to a museum there. Whenever we went to Illinois, we stopped at Wall Drug in South Dakota, and we did the badlands a few times, and the Corn Palace. When we went to New York, we stopped in DC for a day, too. I saw SOOO much as a kid. I kind of miss that.
