It depends on where you are in Italy. My longtime bestie's grandfather is from Italy and I grew up eating his cooking. Believe me, some Italians have spicy sauce.

That's the other reason I don't like OG, between the local place which is run by immigrants and his food, OG is just bleh.

I like other chains, though.
I tried an eggplant parm hot sub ( not at OG ) which was delish with one exception. One additional topping option was Italian hot peppers. It was so hot I thought I would be breathing fire out of my mouth like the dragon at the Fantasmic show at DHS. I doused my mouth with lots of ice cold water. It was so spicy I was sweating and I even like spicy food but nowhere near like those peppers. One place which is OK is Romanos Macaroni Grill which has locations in some states including at the Main Terminal at MCO. NJ residents know better Italian food, all of the Romanos locations pulled out of NJ which the Garden State has incredible pizza and Italian food when I visit.

I am amazed at the collective hate for Olive Garden. I don't understand it, I really like OG and have never had a bad meal there. I went there last Sunday for my Granddaughters 12th Birthday and I'm going again today for lunch and to meet up with my old High School girlfriend (and her husband). They are heading from Connecticut for Florida to spend Christmas with their Son and his family and decided to veer off I-95 for a reunion, of sorts. I have not seen her in around 54 years.

Anyway, back on topic, I have had a number of meals in Italy over a couple of visits to Europe and I found that Olive Garden is as close to authentic as I have found. Yes, there are a lot of restaurants in this country that are owned an operated by "real" Italians, but it has always been authentic American Italian Food. Here the servings are far spicier than in Italy. Nothing wrong with that at all and is something that is popular here in this country, but in my opinion it is not really authentic Italian Cuisine. I guess it just boils down to what we like individually and how we define Italian Food.

That and I've never gotten food poisoning from a local places.
It's not a spice level thing for me as much as a quality of ingredient thing. That and imho some food at OG is over spiced and should be served in a fresher for lack of better word manner. Fish and veggies;)
The bread quality is severely lacking

Well, like my opinion, we all have different tastes and different judgment about it. That is fine, I can only go with my experience and the problem I have with the OG hate is that I really believe that a lot of it was a social thing that grew and it was perceived to be a terrible place. It wasn't what most people expected from Italian Food combined with the fear that saying they liked something that many others didn't, would be embarrassing to them. I'm not saying that is the case with our little band of outlaws, but I do think that tainted a lot of people before they ever went there or to not try it at all. Chain store and all the evils connected with it.

I guess the reality is that everyone I have ever been to is packed with people hating the food, apparently. @Figgy1, I'm sorry about your experience of "food poisoning" but I never saw that listed on any menu so to dismiss an establishment that wasn't that one in particular, doesn't seem fair. It's like saying that I got in a fender bender accident with a Buick in 1999, so I am never buying a GM product again. 🚗;)

Packed with people hating the food is farther from the truth. Romanos Macaroni Grill in Orlando and Kissimmee is packed at dinner time however when Romanos in NJ and other states was a failure when the company decided to close up poor performing locations or pull out of the state completely. . That being said some areas locals don't have the experience of enjoying much more better Italian fare. Dominos Pizza years ago was rated the best pizza in Orlando by its locals. Dominos is an afterthought in states where it is regarded as a joke.

Let it be known that the Barbie movie has been on Max since yesterday and I have watched it twice since then.
Barbie has been nominated for musical best picture in the Golden Globes. The GC is a prelude on which movies will get nominations for the Oscars. Just imagine if the Barbie and Ken movie wins for best picture at the Oscars. Back in the day I took my ex to the Barbie store in Houston, TX. She thought she had gone and went to heaven.

It would be sweet if Calandras in NJ could ship nationwide so state residents outside NJ could enjoy what real bread and Italian pastries taste like.
They're already in quite a few supermarkets in NJ and the surrounding area but mostly bread. That said there's nothing like lining up and getting it fresh and still hot at one of their locations ;)
When I was induced with ds my ob requested I stop there on the way in. Guess who was allowed to eat in labor
Knowing I had to give up gluten that was my last stop. I was in pain for several days and it was worth it:angelic:
