The Chit Chat Chit Chat Thread

I think I might be out of a job soon. They've been steadily decreasing the number of people who are scheduled on any given day, and reducing the amount of work we do in the evenings. I can't work during the day because I need the car to get there and my husband needs the car during the day. This week they only scheduled people for about half of what they normally work, and we just got a message saying they finished next week's schedule and if we want more hours, we need to make ourselves available during the day. I'm scheduled for only 1 of the 3 evenings I had available. They also said going forward, to have a better chance at getting the hours we list as available, we should have mostly daytime hours, and Sundays from 5:00pm to midnight:30. I can't work that late....I have to get up in the morning to make my kids' lunches and make sure they get off to school on time, etc. So it looks like they are trying to mostly phase out the evening work except for those willing to work until 12:30 in the morning. We used to have 60 people working in an evening. Friday we had like 12. When we were bought out by this other company, they promised we would all keep our jobs and we'd stay in our current location, but the big company's location is a 2 hour drive from here. They are busy building a massive expansion on their warehouse, which is almost finished. I'm thinking they are going to move all of our operations there when it's done and close down our warehouse to cut costs. It doesn't make sense to keep ours open when they have the space there. They've already moved all the things we USED to do there, and given us the boring monotonous stuff like folding clothes, which can be done anywhere. They don't need to pay rent and utilities on a big warehouse for that. They already got rid of anyone who worked there through a temp agency, now they are reducing hours for the regular employees, and back in December, we were all given new contracts under the big company name, rather than the company that was taken over. They promised we'd stay that company, and all keep our jobs. I think they are going to just keep that company name for the reputation it has, so people will still order from that company, but in fact, it's in name only. And I think they are just going to not give anyone hours unless they are willing to work the ones they want people to work. I've heard a lot of people complain about needing to change their schedules now that their kids are in school, or whatever, and the agreements they made about hours are not being allowed to change. If you were grandfathered in with specific hours, you can keep them, but you can't negotiate new ones. You either keep what you had, or work what they want you to work. I think they are hoping people will quit so they don't have to pay severance when they finally announce that they are moving to Zwolle. That's just a guess on my part, but I'm applying elsewhere so I'll have a job even if they pull the rug out from under everyone. SOOO many people have already jumped ship. All but one of the supervisors are gone or has given notice, and several of the people who have worked there for years are gone as well. I dread going anyway. It's time for a change!

Thanks, but honestly, I'm kind of relieved. I had already applied in a couple of places because I just haven't been happy with my job since the takeover. They've completely changed everything, and not for the better. I've been there for over 14 years, but it's just not feeling like a good fit anymore. The original owner of the company from over a decade ago has a new business since she sold the one I work for. She's expanding that business and opening a new store in my town, so I contacted her and asked about vacancies a couple of months ago and she said to send my information. I made up a resume and I sent it in this morning after getting the message that they are reducing hours even more. I sent in my resume, and 45 minutes later, there was a facebook post from the new company this woman started saying they are hiring right now. So I should hear back soon, I'd think.
