My first born decided to make an entrance on January 16, 1974. She was born at 1 am and after everyone was settled in, I went home to get a little rest before heading back to the hospital. When I awoke later that morning the temperature was 36 below zero. If there was any mention of wind chill it really didn't matter. Might have been before anything like that was ever thought about. Anyway I went out to my usually trusty 1970 Buick Skylark, a car that never failed me, did that morning. It just wouldn't start. I wasn't sure what I was going to do and at that moment the town plow (yes, it had snowed that night) came down to the end of the street (dead end) and backed into my driveway to turn around so I asked if they could give me a jump start, which they did, and I got to head out to see my wife and young'un. That's why the current 🥶 14 degrees here is really just a tad on the chilly side and in some cases could be considered warm.

That is the coldest I remember ever being with the exception of when I was dispatching for the bus company I worked for up at the base lodge of Mt. Mansfield in Stowe, Vermont directing the shuttle buses that ran up and down the mountain road. It was around 25 below zero and the wind was strong enough that they had to stop the gondolas because they were practically on their sides with the wind pushing them. All that remained were the chairlifts and I thought to myself that this should be an easy day. I'm here to tell you that I way underestimated the degree of foolish skiers can be. They were up there riding on the wide open chairlifts and skiing down directly into the wind. That's when I knew that humans had no future. I feel that is the epitome of brain freeze.
