The Chit Chat Chit Chat Thread

The state of automobiles (not counting commercial vehicles) is ridiculous. We never learned the lesson after the embargo in the 1970's. The size of SUV's make no sense at all. But mostly the style. I could and still can identify the year, make and model of most every car made after 1955 until about 15 years ago. Heck there even was a time when you could tell just by the sound of the engine. My father used to only buy Buicks. We knew when he was arriving strictly by the sound of the motor.

I look around now and every single SUV looks alike. I cannot tell at all if it is a cheaper Chevrolet or a BMW. And they are basically all white. What a bland world and also silly when you will pay thousands of dollars more for a car that can only be recognized if one has memorized that little chrome logo on the rear. Not impressive at all. And why the ginormous size? Are they hauling around enough lumber to build a house if they need it, or a family of four with their hand held electronics. I have shown my car on here before and I bought because the design caught my eye and is different then most other cars. I isn't more expensive, it just looks it, in fact the price falls on the lower end of the scale, but I can get anywhere I want to go "quickly" and inexpensively. I just don't understand.

As a kid when fall came, for excitement we drove from dealer to dealer just to see the design of the new cars. All we have to do now is just pick any random dealer and if you've seen one you've seen them all. Pretty much the only difference will be the taillight configuration and headlight design. And yet they charge, in most cases, more for those vehicles then I paid for the last house I purchased in 1976 and the house was expected to last practically forever. However, that vehicle has planned obsolescence imbedded in it's DNA. Designed to need replacement even before it is paid for.

I to remember the days when a particular GM, Chrysler, or Ford V-8 product was recognizable purely by exhaust note.
I also distinctly remember that back in the day Chrysler products had a very particular starter sound. Cars didn’t always start immediately, like they pretty much do these days. Sometimes you had to pump the pedal a few times, and crank a few times, being careful not to flood the carb…!!!!! :hilarious:
I just remember bein’ in all those campgrounds way back when, and I could tell someone was crankin’ on a Chrysler product, without even seeing it initially…!!!!! :hilarious:

As far as being able to tell a Chevy SUV from a Beemer SUV, I don’t really have a problem with my ability to do that. Even the difference between a Mercedes SUV and a Beemer, etc.
For me anyway, it’s easy enough to spot the brand differences from a distance. As far as Chevy goes, I can easily tell whether it’s a Tahoe or Suburban, but, BMW and Mercedes have about 5-6 different SUV model levels that I can’t always distinguish what model it is unless I get close up.
But, yes, most vehicles definitely aren’t as distinctive as they were way back when…!!! :)

Wow. Had to remove the intake manifold…? Just crazy.
My Pops old truck, with the camper on it, would get up to 12 mpg highway on a good day with a tailwind.
350 small block with with a Rochester 4bbl.
What engine combo was in your ‘56…?
Started out a 6 cylinder automatic, put a 327, carter AFB 500cm 4 barrel, muncie 4 speed== Loved that car left it with my brother when I went to Vietnam my brother sold it but that's another story

I can ID cars for the 50's and 60's and into the 70's they all had a distinct look and style -now forget it they all look the same. Nothing has chrome any more. I can remember every Sat me and my brother were tasked to wash the car a 1957 Dodge 4 dr View attachment 599225 looks like this but 2 tone tan Oh and mydad would always put thoset plastic seat covers that had little speeks of gold in them. I can remember in the summer your legs would stick to them and in the winter they were stiff and cold-- hated them

We never had those plastic seat covers in any of our cars, that I remember, but, I remember many friends and relatives did.

Right now, there is a 40 percent chance of snow on Sunday in the morning.
Speaking of snow, I think Animal Crossing: Happy home paradise has @MinnieM123's dream area & house. The outside has snow all year round. The backyard has snow stuff. The house is called ice palace. The client of the home is a penguin.

It has ice furniture, ice sculpture, and other cold stuff. Ice Furniture even includes an ice bed, ice chair, ice shelving units and ice table. Other could stuff is stuff like slushy machine, and Ice cream table top. Ice cream table top is the same one that ice cream, Galeto, and Frozen custard places use to show 8 to 10 flavors.

@Tony the Tigger -- are you still in Vegas, or have you returned home yet? (I assume you're back?)

Think he's there until tomorrow?
I’m still here. Here’s today’s jambalaya from House of Blues:

Full disclosure: it’s nowhere near as good as Margaritaville’s. But it was pretty good. And the first slot machine I touched afterwards covered the cost in about 2 minutes!

Don't blame me! MPG is always on the check list when buying a car. Latest on 40 mpg city and highway:joyfull:

I got up to 60 mpg one time on my way into work. Which makes me nervous actually. Why? My transmission went right after I had high mileage for a week.

I would like an electric car but those are not very good either. Well, they are no gas but the battery is bad for the environment, expensive and not a very high number of electric stations.
