I've apparently got a crazy family history.

My mom's family at least partially came to Virginia in like 1632 and then went to Maryland, and then they never left.
My dad's family came at all different times, some to New York, some to Pennsylvania...and I'm not through with his side yet.
I have English, Scottish, Irish, Dutch, German, Eastern European Jew (we have no idea how...maybe I'll finally figure it out?), French, Native American, and African in me. At least.
I've found two ancestors who served in the war of 1812 - one died in a pointless battle.

It's addictive. Like, keep going, who else will you find...

ETA - found several Revolutionary War members. Okay then...
We have a crazy 2nd cousin that takes care of our family tree...I DO want to get a copy from him (it's all digital) but he's one of those "latches on and never goes away" people and I'm not sure I have the strength for that.

I DO know that my paternal grandfather was in the mounted cavalry.

I'm very much mixed, too...primarily English, French and Irish, with some Dutch and Native American (my birth father says we can be traced back to Pocahontas, but I'm not sure I buy that).

Once you get started it's kind of easy because you can link to other people who have the same ancestors as you and they've done the work for you.

I traced back a line all the way to Germany. Got until the 1500s before I lost it. Whomp whomp.

The random freed slave my grandma's brother found was the big surprise. I'm like, wow...related to slave owners on one side and slaves on the other...that's great.

So tonite my kids learned that their dead fathers hospital bills from Covid were a quarter of million dollars. Just hospital bills. They as next of kin authorized none Nor did the hospital contact them Ever. This does not include any physician expenses. Too bad he couldn’t have gone to
Walter Reed for free like Billionaire people have.

Disappointed to hear that your school administration is practically ignoring this situation -- and sort of dumping the whole thing in your lap, without any real assistance. This is not fair to you or to the student. I'm surprised that they could get away with this hands-off approach.

(I don't know what other avenues are available to you to request some backup assistance. Are there any kind of video education lessons in his language, for his grade level, that the administration could purchase for him? That might be an option.) Otherwise, I'd assume that it would be nearly impossible to have him move on up the next grade, with this classmates, at the end of the academic year.
I cannot comprehend how this child doesn’t have a student advocate. What the heck? Screams racial discrimination.

My daughter has a pit bull like that. That is an awful mean name isn't it? PIT BULL!!! She is the sweetest huge, muscular dog you could ever hope to find. It is a good thing because she is a lousy watchdog. A person could break in and they'd find him in the morning, licked to death. She doesn't need to be mean, once you lay eyes on her, you will do whatever is necessary to get completely out of that particular zip code.

Anyway, something changed in the dining room and she stopped going in there, even to get free regular food handouts from everyone. Her water dish and her food dish have been sitting in the corner of that room since they first rescued her
and fortunately it is a small corner and has direct access from two different rooms. From the living room she would stretch her neck around the corner to eat and then go all the way around the other side, down the hallway through the kitchen and stretch her neck around the entrance to drink her water. Weird! No one knows what changed in the room to spook her that much, but that was over a year ago and she is just starting to actually enter the dining room to eat from her bowl and from the plates of generous dinners.
Poor thing! And this isn't the daughter who completely renovated the house? Did they get a new appliance or paint or something? When I was growing up, we had a little dog and one day he was barking his fool head off. We went back to find out what was going on and the inflatable Shamu that my brother had hanging from his ceiling had fallen and was on the floor. Completely freaked the dog out.

So the key word here is secrecy. A very wise and necessary parenting procedure. 🤫
We can't do that with A. He will freak out if he doesn't have enough notice. I was really surprised on Wednesday. Tuesday afternoon I got a text from the Tennis club that the instructor's kids were sick and lessons were canceled until further notice. Wednesday was supposed to be his last "test lesson" to see if he wants to learn tennis. (spoiler, he does!) He was really upset that it was canceled as he had really been looking forward to it. Wednesday, a couple of hours before the lesson was supposed to be, a different instructor asked if any of the boys wanted to practice with him instead. I figured A wouldn't want to anymore because it was only an hour and a half before he had to go and that's just too short of notice for him, but he said yes and was really happy to get to go anyway. Which is a really positive sign about how much he is loving tennis. Anything else and he probably would have said no.

We can't do surprises, even things he will love. We have to let him know in advance what's coming or he will melt down.

Is there a possibility that the hospital will wave it? Did he not have insurance? When my mom passed, she had over $10,000 that wasn't covered by insurance. The insurance company wanted her to travel to California for bone scans because it was cheaper there. Yeah....THAT'S realistic. So they denied a lot of her claims for medical treatments that she really did need because it was too expensive in Wyoming. They would have paid for it if she had gone to California, but not when she got treated where she lived. The hospital waved all of those fees so we didn't have to pay them. I mean, what do they do if there's no kin to pay it off?

Hi everyone. Hope you are all safe and well during these crazy times.

I've been reminded that there are a lot of cat people down here and I have a question. Our cat (who is over 15 years old) is suddenly growing a little beige colored teardrop shaped thing on his face - see below picture.

He doesn't seem to be bothered by it at all, but has anyone else seen this type of thing before? Trying to figure out if it's time for a vet visit.

Thanks in advance.

Relating this to my dog, sometimes animals have mysterious bumps that appear, and most are benign.

Especially in an older animal, whatever they are, tend to grow slower and the vet will just let it go -- but the vet would also tell you if it starts growing quicker to come in.

Then there are (certain types) of bumps that simply get drained of fluid, in the vet's office.

So in the case of your cat, since this is something new and uncommon, you might want to consider a vet visit (no rush), if for nothing else, your own peace of mind. Again, the age of the cat will be taken into consideration (probably more of an issue if it was a young cat, for example, due to a higher metabolism--leading to a more rapid growth of any lumps).

@SteveBrickNJ , now that you and your students have experienced a few weeks of the new school schedule, how are things going?

You mentioned recently that your new schedule was exhausting (at least to start), and I was wondering if things have become any easier and less stressful, a few weeks now into the fall. I'm sure it's been challenging for your students as well.
