Hi all. I'm a bit behind. A book I reserved months ago at the library was finally in and so I was reading that, and finished it just in time for a book I've been waiting for for 10 years to come out, so I've been in a literary cacoon for the last week or so. And now it's hotter than Hades out there (37/38C, 99/100F) and of course, no AC here, so I am not sure how much time I want to spend on the computer, because it is just too hot. But I wanted to say hi anyway.
That is super hot. Do you have a community pool or a lake to go to?

We found a DVD copy decades ago at a flea market. You can tell it's pirated due to the faded wording/print on parts of the cover (even though it mostly looks like the real deal), smaller than usual DVD case, and no graphics on the DVD itself. Was under $10.00 so figured "Why not?"

What was shocking was, while surfing through the bonus content, which I believe is mostly radio interview audios, music from the film, and old theatrical trailers, I stumbled across a very racist Warner Bros. Looney Tunes short called "Coal Black", telling the story of Snow White with African American characters. Definitely not something that would have been put on there had it come from a legit studio. 😮

Anytime I want to watch it, I just pull it up on archive.org.

She is apprehensive. But, we are both going to be positive at this point, and muddle through it.

Dance is open. She seems pretty up in the air about it though. As a performing troupe, most of their performances were at senior living facilities. The one competition they do would be around April, so who knows. She also isn't feeling great about being in an enclosed space, with face mask optional. Truthfully, I have a hard time with that one, too. On the other hand, she told me she has been looking forward to her senior solo since she was little.

I think the hardest part for her is the loss of things that have been taken for granted as part of the high school experience. She is sad that there will be no Homecoming, game or dance. No poms. Competitive dance is on the high risk list, so we'll see about that. And, she worries that there will be no prom again this year. Again, totally understand it all, but you still mourn over the loss of these milestones.
Isn't she wanting to do something with dance as a career? Will that be difficult without the competitions and such? I read today that the vaccine coming out of Oxford could be ready in September. One of the virologists is Dutch and did an interview and said it looks promising. Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the UK have ordered 300 million doses of it, but I don't know about the US. But if it's ready in a month or so, that would be great news for schools and such.

I am thinking ahead to my retirement years...whenever that will be....and wondering if a good job for me someday would be a front desk staff member at my local Hilton Garden Inn Lakewood NJ. Did any of you ever work in that kind of job?......or do you know someone who ever worked at that job? You guys kind of "know me". Could you imagine me doing that? All candid feedback is welcome! :)View attachment 489479
I worked front desk at a University residence hall, also in the Summer when they were used to house conferences, just like hotels do. I really enjoyed it most of the time. The only thing I didn't like was some of the supervisors, because they didn't hire the management from people with experience in it, so half the time I knew more about the rules than the supervisors did. A couple of the managers were very unprofessional and would scapegoat those of us below them for mistakes they made themselves. For example: One conference group did not pay for towels to be provided...there were different options for them as to what was included in their package. When the conference people checked in, they came back to the desk demanding towels, which we were not allowed to supply because they were not included in their package. We called the manager, explained, and asked if we could give them towels since they had not been told by their organizers that they weren't provided. She said no, that was the organizers problem. They were very angry, asked to see the manager, and then the manager chewed us out in front of the guests for not giving them the towels she told us not to give them. Instead of taking responsibility for her orders, she blamed us so she didn't have to take the heat. But I would guess in an actual hotel situation, that probably wouldn't be an issue. Most of the upper management would have years of experience in the hotel industry and would know how things are done.

Do you speak any languages besides English? That can be a real asset in the travel industry and increase your chances of employment. Over here, you can't get into the hotel industry without speaking English, French and German at least. Spanish and Turkish are also very helpful, though not required.

We are currently in line waiting for the Skyliner to open at the pop. And there is a family group behind us about a group of 20 and they have busted out their portable speaker and are playing music and singing along. So am I too much of a fuddy duddy to think this is poor etiquette? It isn’t terrible music but still. I also dislike when people pull out their portable speakers at the pool too.
Isn't there a loop that plays at the skyliner stations like there is everywhere else in Disney? It seems incredibly rude to subject everyone to music they may not like. It's a public space....that's a no-no. You're not a fuddy duddy.

We made reservations for tomorrow at the local rec center to go swimming. There is a lake area, but it's not safe in this weather because there's some sort of parasite or something in the water that causes skin irritation? I don't know what it's called in English, but the literal translation from Dutch is Blue Algae. So we can't go there. But E had a party to go to at her friend's house today, so we couldn't go today.

Edited to add: We are having a heatwave this week. Every day is supposed to be in the 90s for the next week or so.

We've had the self scan kiosks for years here, and we also have a "smart shelf" return system. Instead of dumping your books into a slot, you put them into this special bookcase that scans them when they are put on the shelf. There's a screen so you can see if it registers or not. If it's been reserved by someone else, the title turns red on the screen, and then you have to put it into a separate compartment that gets emptied first so it's a faster turnover to the next person. It really does work well, IF you know how to use it, but there was definitely a learning curve to it.

Do you read a lot? What genres do you like?
I've not been able to get a book out of the library since February. What I discovered was that the books that I already have in my bookcase are as interesting now as they were when I first read them. And I don't have to leave home to get it or bring it back. I remember taking our 1963 by Steven King. That book is about 2 inches thick and I don't have a set time to just sit down and read them if I can get 30 minutes a day committed I feel I have had a major accomplishment. I was about 1/2 of it before it was due back and I couldn't renew it because there was a waiting list of people wanting it. It was close to my Birthday so I asked for the book and got it, so I could read it at my leisure. Really good book by the way. I'm ready to read that one again but first I have a new book I got on my Birthday. Yet, another Kennedy family exposure type, I think. Haven't read it yet, but it is next on my list.

I saw a Jimmy Fallon thing where they do a "News made right" thing. They take a news story and change the ending to make it right. They showed the splash down and said that they were briefing the austronauts inside as they were getting out about what's been going on here....Covid, murder hornets, etc, and then they showed the capsule taking off back to space instead of them exiting the capsule. Like "NOPE! Not coming back to THAT! Let's go back to space!"

Yea, I originally thought they were supposed to be up/out 🤔;) there for only a coupla’ weeks (from what I remember of pre-launch commentary...? :cyclops:), because it was “just” a test mission. No clue why it mighta’ been extended, but, if I had no family, I probably woulda’ wanted to stay there, too...!!!!! 🚀:D

Thank you for the feedback. It really was helpful!
Re. the language situation, my Ocean County region of NJ does not attract international visitors. Our tourism is mostly people from our neighboring states coming in during the warm weather months to enjoy the beaches and the boardwalk.

I think my speaking English only will not be an issue.
Do you think my years of dealing with people as a public school teacher will be a positive in their eyes?...or actually they'll feel it is not relevant?

I worked the front desk at the Holiday inn in Anchorage AK for a few years. Like any customer service job, people are jerks sometimes. And it can be stressful when rooms aren't ready, and you are short staffed and trying to answer the phone and work the front desk at the same time. That being said, I still enjoyed it.
