I was really hoping (still holding a little hope) that maybe another only child would want to do this. A 15 year old and a 10 year old are a huge age gap in maturity and life, but I thought it might help with boredom for both and they could just play basketball, soccer, trampoline, hit golf balls or baseballs.. we have a ton of sports equipment here, and I have a good space to do school work... I thought maybe someone would look at this as “I can make $600-$750 over 3 weeks and not be sitting at home alone”. To me that’s a good chunk of money for a 15 year old.

Maybe I’m being too naive.
Once the fast food places close, or greatly reduce hours, you might have better luck. Honestly, if we lived closer, I would strongly suggest DD quit her job at DQ, and do this instead.

Her current job makes me very nervous. I am hoping the owner comes to her senses, soon.

I hope some other parents might feel the same as you! Our circle is mostly comprised of so many big families, that I don’t think this is something they want to do...they have 2-4 siblings close in age at home to hang out with, at their own house.

I’m sorry that you’re uncomfortable with her job. Is she nervous too? I think her boss would have to let her take time off if she (or you) is not comfortable working in fast food during this time. It’s understandable.

With all the bread flying off the shelves and people worried about being quarantined in their houses what's the flour status in the stores. Do people not know how to make bread any more, will certainly have plenty of time stuck in your house. The wife makes bread-- nothing better than a fresh loaf of bread out of the oven warm and a stick of butter.
Don't forget some of us are working even though we are stuck in our houses... the last thing I want to do after sitting in front of my computer for 8 hours is make bread. Maybe on the weekends.

She is not nervous, at all. Which does worry me.

Much like OH, IL is now pick up, or delivery only. Her boss envisions people driving up to the curb, placing an order with someone waiting outside, who then runs, makes whatever, runs back out, and then cash exchange. That is a lot of close contact and live currency because someone needs an ice cream cone, sundae, or Blizzard.
I am hoping this changes by the end of the week, when she is scheduled to work next.

They can wear those disposable gloves, maybe?

Here’s T’s schedule.. please let me know if you would change anything.

8am-8:15 wake up, breakfast
8:20-8:50 Make bed, get dressed, FIFA 11+
8:50 online math
9am-10:30log on to first teachers site, do the assignments
10:30-11 snack, daily gym assignment
11-11:30 reading time
11:30-12:05 art project, music, or science experiment (“specials”)
12:05-12:30 lunch
12:30-1:30 soccer assignment from coach
1:30-3pm 2nd teacher assignment
3-3:15 stretch/jumping jacks
3:15-3:45 Spanish

Is it weird to put his soccer practice in the middle of the school day?
The morning FIFA 11+ is dynamic stretching, he does some kind of exercise every morning now before school.

He never sleeps in until 8am.. but I’m extending for his bed time to 10pm because I’ll be working later during this time, hoping he may sleep in.

He’ll still have projects to work on in the evening.. but I’m not scheduling those, a lot will have to do with my own availability. He can do much of it on his own though.

I think that is great. I would tell him though that if he finishes his afternoon schoolwork before 3pm, he can go on to the next activity assigned.

I think that the soccer practice in the middle is good. He is an active kid and it is a nice way to break up the day. You can also ask him if he would rather get all the schoolwork done first, and then do his soccer and gym activities at the end of the day.

As a teenager I would have jumped at that chance. Especially to look after a kid that was a little older and would have been fun to hang out with.

I will!

One of my biggest concerns is that we went from completely overscheduled to no schedule. He is so active that I’m worried about what so much inactivity and lack of schedule will do to him physically and mentally. Our lives are so regimented, we’ve figured out how to handle it all, and it works..so I want to try to keep some type of pattern there.

I want to do an evening schedule too, set time for baseball and golf practice.. as if it was him going to practice, but I also want to leave free time for things like basketball and whatever else he might want to do (limited video games time though).

Both school and soccer are recommending this like Video chats with friends.. quizzing each other in school subjects, and training together in soccer.

I’ve spoken to a couple of parents who are going to set times for our kids to do this. T doesn’t have a cell phone but he does have an iPad so he can FaceTime when I’m not at home. Hopefully that will be fun for him and help with the loneliness. He misses his soccer teammates so much already, and it hasn’t even been a full week since he last saw them.
